CHARITY-दानं-DAANAM

   SUBHASHITHANI:631

Daataa pratigruhitaa cha Shuddhir deyam cha dharmayuk I
Desakaalau cha danaanaam angaan etaani shad vidhuh II
The giver-should have honesty, the receiver- should be deserving, purity- offering must be without any grudge or expectation, the gift-should be appropriate, the place, and the time - these are the six parts of charity.

Dvihetu shad adhishtaanam shad angam cha dvipakayuk I
Chatushprakaaram thrividham thri naasham daanamuchyate II
For charity, there are two facilitators, there are six approaches, six organs, two types of results (fruits), four modes of charity, three grades, three ways  of loss due to wrong charity, it is said.
Two fecilitators- Shraddha and shakti, Commitment and capacity
Six pillars- Dharma, Artha, Kaama, Lajja, Harsha, Bhaya
Six organs- The giver, the receiver, purity, the gift, the place, and the time.
Two results- Here and here after
Four modes of charity- Dhruv, Thrik, kaamya, naimithika
Three grades – Uttamam, madymam, kanishtam
Three ways of loss- Paschatapa, apaatrataa, ashraddha,

Insulting, turning away, delaying, uttering harsh words and repenting after giving. All these five contaminate donations.

Sukshettre vaapayet bheejam supaatre nikshipet dhanam I

Sukshetre cha supaatre hyuptam dattam a nasyati II

Seeds should be sown in a fertile land, money should be given to the deserving. Sown in a good field and given to the deserving, it never perishes.

Alpamapi kshitau kshiptam vata bhejam pravardhhate I
Jalayogaat yathaa daanaat punya vrukshopi vardhate II
Just as a small banyan seed planted on the ground grows with water, similarly a man’s tree of virtue also grows with charity.
Nyāyagatena dravyena kartavyam paaralokikam.
Daanam Hi Vidhina Deyam kaale Patre Gunanvite
With the money received justly, one should perform otherworldly duties. Donation should be given lawfully, to a virtuous person, at the right time.
Maataa pitarau gurau mitre vineete cha upakaarine I
Deennaanaatha visishteshu dattam tat saphalam bhavet II
What is given to parents, teachers, friends, cultured people, benefactors and especially to the poor and orphans (or God) will yield results without fail.

Na rane vijayat shuroadhyayanat na cha pandit:
Neither the speaker is eloquent, nor the giver.
Indriyaan Jaye Shuro Dharmam Charati Pandit:
Hita Praayoktibhi: vaktaa,daataa,sam maana daanatah
A man is called brave not by winning the battle field, but by the conquest of the senses; A person is called a scholar not by study but by religious conduct; A person is called an orator not by eloquence but by beneficial speech; And not (only) by giving money, but by giving respect (by giving respectfully) a person becomes a donor.

MERCY -दया-DAYA

  SUBHASHITHANI:630

SB 4.31.19
dayayā sarva-bhūteu santuṣṭyā yena kena vā
sarvendriyopaśāntyā ca tuyaty āśu janārdana
By showing mercy to all living entities, being satisfied somehow or other and controlling the senses from sense enjoyment, one can very quickly satisfy the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Janārdana.

Sansare manushyam saram manushye cha kaulinyam.
Kaulinye Dharmitvam Dharmitve Chapi Sadayatvam
In the cycle of mundane existence human life is rare; the essence of human life is nobility; nobility implies leading a dharmic life; dharmic life is characterised by showing mercy to all living beings.
Na saa Deeksha na saa bhiksha na tat dhaanam na ttat tapah I
Na tat dhyaanam na tat maunam Namrata yatra na vidhyate II
Without compassion initiation, almsgiving, charity, penance, meditation, and silence are all futile.
Sarvey Veda na tat Kuryu: Survey Yagyascha Bharata I
Sarvey Teerthabhishekashcha Tat Kuryat Praninam Daya
O Bhārata! He who cannot study the Vedas (Scriptures), do Yajnas (sacrificial fires), travel to the holy places or do abhisheka (daily ablutions) can at least be compassionate towards other beings !!
Dayaheenam  Nishphalam Syannaasti Dharmastu Tatra Hi.
Ete VedaA Aveda: Syur daya Yatra na Vidyate
Merciless work is fruitless, there is no virtue in it. Where there is no mercy, there the Vedas are present in absence.
Dayangana, sadaa sevyaa sarva kaama phalapradaa I
Sevitasau Karotyashu Mansam Karunamayam II
Kindness, which gives the fruit of all actions, should be practised    at all the time; One who practices it diligently will soon find his mind overflowing with compassion.
Lavanyarahitam rupam vidya varjitam vapuḥ.I
Jalatyaktam Saro Bhati Naiva Dharmo Dayam Vina
Appearance without elegance, man without education, pond without water do not shine. Similarly, Dharma without compassion also does not shine.
There is no friend like education, no enemy like disease, no affection like son, and no virtue is better than mercy. "
Dharma jeevdayaa tulyo na kwaapi jagtitale.
Tasmat sarvaprayatnena kaarya jivdayaangibhiḥ
There is no other virtue in this world equal to love to living beings; therefore, you should practice mercy to living-beings with all your efforts.

Dayam Vinaa Deva Gurukramarchaa:
Tapamsi Sarvendriya yantranani
Daanaani Shastradhyayanani Sarvam
Sainyam Gataswaami Yatha Tathaiva
Worship of God and Guru, penance, suppression of all senses,
charity and study of scriptures - all these activities without mercy are
like an army without a commander.

FORGIVENESS-क्षमा- ANTIDOTE FOR ANGER- PEARLS FROM MB

 SUBHASHITHANI:629

atṛṇe patito vahniḥ svayamevopaśāmyati|
akṣamāvān paraṁ doṣairātmānaṁ caiva yojayet||
Fire fallen on a grass-less [land] extinguishes itself.
A man without patience/forgiveness brings trouble unto himself.

Yudhishtira is explaining the importance of "forgiveness" to Draupadi:

tāḥ kṣīyeranprajāḥ sarvāḥ kṣipraṃ ol draupadi tādṛśe |
tasmānmanyurvināśāya prajānāmabhavāya ca || 30 ||

If kings yield to anger, O! Draupadi, their subjects soon meet with ruin; thus anger brings on destruction and distress on mankind.

yasmāttu loke dṛśyante kṣamiṇaḥ pṛthivīsamāḥ |
tasmājjanma ca bhūtānāṃ bhavaśca pratipadyate || 31 ||

Because there are people forgiving like the earth are present in this world, it is  that creatures are born and enjoy prosperity.

As earth bears up the men who delve into her breast,To bear with scornful men of virtues is the best

atrāpyudāharantīmā gāthā nityaṃ kṣamāvatām |
gītāḥ kṣamāvatā kṛṣṇe kāśyapena mahātmanā || 35 ||

As an illustration of this, O! Draupadi, the following  hymn in praise of those forgiving is sung by high-souled and ever forgiving  Kashyapa.

kṣamā dharmaḥ kṣamā yajñaḥ kṣamā vedāḥ kṣamā śrutam |
yastāmevaṃ vijānāti sa sarvaṃ kṣantumarhati || 36 ||

Forgiveness is virtue, is sacrifice, it is the vedas, it is shruti; he who knows all this is capable of forgiving all.

kṣamā brahma kṣamā satyaṃ kṣamā bhūtaṃ ca bhāvi ca |
kṣamā tapaḥ kṣamā śaucaṃ kṣamayā coddhṛtaṃ jagat || 37 ||

Forgiveness is Brahma, is truth, is the accumulated and future merit, is penance, is purity; it is by Kshama the world is sustained.

tāṃ kṣamāmīdṛśīṃ kṛṣṇe kathamasmadvidhastyajet |
yasyāṃ brahma ca satyaṃ ca yajñā lokāśca viṣṭhitāḥ ||| 40 ||

How can I O! Krishnaa, renounce such forgiveness in which are established Brahma, truth, wisdom and the three worlds.

kṣamāvatāmayaṃ lokaḥ paraścaiva kṣamāvatām |
iha saṃmānamṛcchanti paratra ca śubhāṃ gatim || 42 ||

This world belongs to the forgiving, also the other world; they are honoured

and respected  here and in the next world.

iti gītāḥ kāśyapena gāthā nityaṃ kṣamāvatām |
śrutvā gāthāḥ kṣamāyāstvaṃ tuṣya draupadi mā krudhaḥ || 44 ||

These verses were always chanted by Kashyapa in honour of the forgiving; hearing these verses Draupadi be pleased and be not angry.

etadātmavatāṃ vṛttameṣa dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ |
kṣamā caivānṛśaṃsyaṃ ca tatkartāsmyahamañjasā || 50 ||

‘Forgiveness’ and ‘Humility’ are the characteristic of the self-controlled and constitute the eternal dharma and therefore I shall adopt them.
