ANGER- क्राेधः- PEARLS FROM MB

 SUBHASHITHANI:628

Conversation between Yudhishtira and Draupadi "

yudhiṣṭhira uvāca |
krodho hantā manuṣyāṇāṃ krodho bhāvayitā punaḥ |
iti viddhi mahāprājñe krodhamūlau bhavābhavau || 1 ||

Yudhishtira said:

Anger lead men to death, but if conquered anger gives new life; consider therefore o highly intelligent lady, that anger is the root of prosperity and adversity.

yo hi saṃharate krodhaṃ bhāvastasya suśobhane |
yaḥ punaḥ puruṣaḥ krodhaṃ nityaṃ na sahate śubhe |
tasyābhāvāya bhavati krodhaḥ paramadāruṇaḥ || 2 ||
One who conquers his anger, o! beautiful lady, prospers; whilst those who don’t, reap severe adversity as a consequence.

krodhamūlo vināśo hi prajānāmiha dṛśyate |
tatkathaṃ mādṛśaḥ krodhamutsṛjellokanāśanam || 3 ||

The terrible anger contributes to his downfall. It has been seen that anger is the root of destruction for all beings. How can someone like me indulge in anger, when it brings about the destruction of the worlds?

kruddhaḥ pāpaṃ naraḥ kuryātkruddho hanyādgurūnapi |
kruddhaḥ paruṣayā vācā śreyaso'pyavamanyate || 4 ||

The angry man commits sin. The angry man may even murder his superiors. The angry man abuses his superiors with harsh words.

vācyāvācye hi kupito na prajānāti karhicit |
nākāryamasti kruddhasya nāvācyaṃ vidyate tathā || 5 ||

When angered, one cannot distinguish between what should be said and what should not be said. There is nothing that such a person cannot do or say.

etāndoṣānprapaśyadbhirjitaḥ krodho manīṣibhiḥ |
icchadbhiḥ paramaṃ śreya iha cāmutra cottamam || 7 ||

Realising these evils anger is conquered by one desirous of well-being in this world and the next.

ātmānaṃ ca paraṃ caiva trāyate mahato bhayāt |
krudhyantamapratikrudhyandvayoreṣa cikitsakaḥ || 9 ||

One who does not react against a person whose anger has been excited, saves himself and others from great fears- in fact he is the physician of both.

mūḍho yadi kliśyamānaḥ krudhyate'śaktimānnaraḥ |
balīyasāṃ manuṣyāṇāṃ tyajatyātmānamantataḥ || 10 ||

When a foolish man, oppressed by others is angry with those that are stronger, he brings his own ruin.

tasmādbalavatā caiva durbalena ca nityadā |
kṣantavyaṃ puruṣeṇāhurāpatsvapi vijānatā || 13 ||

Therefore, a wise man whether strong or weak, should always forgive his persecutor, even if he is in difficulty.

manyorhi vijayaṃ kṛṣṇe praśaṃsantīha sādhavaḥ |
kṣamāvato jayo nityaṃ sādhoriha satāṃ matam || 14 ||

The pious always praise him, o! Draupadi, who has conquered his anger; the sages declare that the honest and forgiving man is always victorious.

SRI KRISHNAYA THUBHYAM NAMAH
