DESTINY IS UNFAILING -17-PTML17

 SUBHASHITHANI:407

arthasyopārjanaṃ kṛtvā naivābhāgyaḥ samaśnute |
araṇyaṃ mahadāsādya mūḍhaḥ somilako yathā || 2.127 ||
No one can enjoy the wealth earned through hard work, if fate not willing so; like Somalika who was bewildered when he reached the forest.

utpatanti yad ākāśe nipatanti mahītale |
pakṣiṇāṃ tad api prāptyā nādattam upatiṣṭhati || 2.128 ||

Birds flying high in the sky or descending to the ground are governed by the ‘law of karma’; for nothing come to us that we are not destined to get. ( Idea is whether one goes up in life or falls depends on his previous actions.)

na hi bhavati yan na bhāvyaṃ bhavati ca bhāvyaṃ vināpi yatnena |
kara-tala-gatam api naśyati yasya tu bhavitavyatā nāsti || 2.129 ||

Things not destined to happen, does not happen. That which is slated to happen happens with out any effort. What is placed on the palm of the hand disappears if fate is not favourable.

yathā dhenu-sahasreṣu vatso vindati mātaraṃ |
tathā pūrva-kṛtaṃ karma kartāram anugacchati || 2.130 ||
Just as a calf can find its mother among a thousand cows,
The effects of one’s deeds will follow the perpetrator.

śete saha śayānena gacchantam anugacchati |
narāṇāṃ prāktanaṃ karma tiṣṭhati tu sahātmanā || 2.131 ||

The fruits of one’s actions sticks to the soul and follows him throughout his existence.

yathā chāyā-tapau nityaṃ susambaddhau parasparaṃ |
evaṃ karma ca kartā ca saṃśliṣṭāv itaretaram || 2.132 ||

Just as sun and the shadow are inseparable, so are actions and their doer are inter linked to each other.

yathaikena na hastena tālikā saṃprapadyate |
tathodyama-parityaktaṃ na phalaṃ karmaṇaḥ smṛtam || 2.133 ||

Just as clapping is not possible with one hand, similarly without self-effort mere destiny will not provide the fruit of actions.

paśya karma-vaśāt prāptaṃ bhojyakāle'pi bhojanam |
hastodyamaṃ vinā vaktre praviśen na kathañcana || 2.134 ||

Look! What ever we have at the time of dining to eat cannot enter the mouth with out the efforts of the hands.

ENTHUSIASM LEADS TO PROSPERITY -16-PTML16

 SUBHASHITHANI:406

abhrac-chāyā khala-prītiḥ samudrānte cha medinī |
alpenaiva vinaśyanti yauvanāni dhanāni cha || 2.118 ||

Shadow of clouds, friendship with a wicked person, ground near the ocean indeed disappear in a short time, as also youth and wealth.

 nije'pi dehe na viyojitaiḥ kvacit |
puṃso yamāntaṃ vrajato 'pi niṣṭhurair
 etair dhanaiḥ pañcapadī na dīyate || 2.119 ||
Wealth is acquired by men with great care, protects it like his own life, dislikes spending it even for his own comfort; but at the time of death this hard hearted wealth does not take even five steps out of sympathy to a man.

yathāmiṣaṃ jale matsyair bhakṣyate śvāpadair bhuvi |
ākāśe pakṣibhiś caiva tathā sarvatra vittavān || 2.120 ||

A piece of meat is sought after and eaten by fish in the water, by dogs on land, and by birds in the sky. So is a wealthy man swallowed up in many ways, wherever he goes.

nirdoṣam api vittāḍhya doṣair yojayate nṛpaḥ |
nidhanaḥ prāpta-doṣo 'pi sarvatra nirupadravaḥ || 2.121 ||

Even if one is guiltless a rich man is charged with crimes by a king; while a poor man though guilty of a crime is left without punishment everywhere.

Arthaanaam arjane dukham arjitaanaam cha rakshane I

Aaye dukham vyaye dukham dhigarthaah kashta samshrayaah II2.122

It is difficult to earn money, and to protect the earnings. Income as well as expenditure give pain – Fie on Money which is the cause of hardship.

arthārthī yāni kaṣṭāni mūḍho 'yaṃ sahate janaḥ |
śatāṃśenāpi mokṣārthī tāni cen mokṣam āpnuyāt || 2.123 ||

Those ignorant men who strain themselves to earn money, if only they exert one hundredth of it, even if they were to wish for ‘moksha’ they would get it.

ko dhīrasya manasvinaḥ sva-viṣayaḥ ko vā videśaḥ smṛto

yaṃ deśaṃ śrayate tam eva kurute bāhu-pratāpārjitam |
yad daṃṣṭrānakhalāṅgula-praharaṇaiḥ siṃho vanaṃ gāhate

 tasmin eva hata-dvipendra-rudhirais tṛṣṇāṃ chinatty ātmanaḥ || 2.124 ||

For a steady minded and talented man which country is considered  his own and which country is foreign? Where ever he goes, he makes that place his own by the might of his arms; the lion quenches his thirst with the blood of the lord of the elephant he kills, just in that forest which he, armed with his jaws, claws and tail, enters.

ko 'tibhāraḥ samarthānāṃ kiṃ dūraṃ vyavasāyinām |
ko videśaḥ suvdyānāṃ kaḥ paraḥ priya-vādinām || 2.125 ||

What is too heavy for the strong and what place is too distant for those who put forth effort? What country is foreign to a man of true learning? Who can be inimical to one who speaks pleasingly?

 kriyā-vidhijñaṃ vyasaneṣv asaktam |
śūraṃ kṛtajñaṃ dṛḍha-sauhṛdaṃ ca-

 lakṣmīḥ svayaṃ vāñchati vāsa-hetoḥ || 2.126 ||

Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth, seeks those who are passionate about their work, who do not procrastinate, who know how to get work done, who do not run behind worldly pleasures, who are courageous, grateful and who are surrounded by good friends.

NATURE OF A TRUE FRIEND -15-PTML15

 SUBHASHITHANI:405

gavārthe brāhmaṇārthe ca strī-vitta-haraṇe tathā |
prāṇāṃs tyajati yo yuddhe tasya lokāḥ sanātanāḥ || 2.110 ||

He who sacrifices his life for the sake of a cow, a vedic scholar, for saving his wife or wealth being taken away and in a battle field attains the world of eternal-bliss.

prāptavyam arthaṃ labhate manuṣyo

 devo 'pi taṃ laṅghayituṃ na śaktaḥ |
tasmān na śocāmi na vismayo me

yad asmadīyaṃ na hi tat pareṣām || 2.111 ||

Whatever an individual is supposed to get (by his good fortune), even God cannot deny him. Hence, I am neither sad nor elated. What belongs to us can never be someone else’s.

guroḥ sutāṃ mitra-bhāryāṃ svāmi-sevaka-gehinīm |
yo gacchati pumāṃl loke tam āhur brahma-ghātinam || 2.112 ||

One is said to have committed greatest sin if one indulges in illicit relationship with guru’s daughter, friend’s wife and  wife of the master or servant.

ayaśaḥ prāpyate yena yena cādho-gatir bhavet |
svārthāc ca bhraśyate yena tat karma na samācaret || 2.113 ||

One should not act in such a way that brings infamy, or will be condemned to hell, or pushed  down from heaven.

vikāraṃ yāti no cittaṃ vitte yasya kadācana |
mitraṃ syāt sarva-kāle ca kārayen mitram uttamam || 2.114 ||
One should make such a friend, a most desirable,  who is not affected by the prosperity of his friend and who ever remains a true friend.

vidvadbhiḥ suhṛdām atra cihnair etair asaṃśayam |
parīkṣā-karaṇaṃ proktaṃ homāgner iva paṇḍitaiḥ || 2.115 ||

To clear all doubts about the sincerity of a friend, the wise men declare that testing of friends should be made with these signs, as that of sacrificial fire is enjoined by wise sages.

āpat-kāle tu samprāpte yan mitraṃ mitram eva tat |
vṛddhi-kāle tu samprāpte durjano 'pi suhṛd bhavet || 2.116 ||

He who stands by you in times of trouble, and does not change his behaviour towards you in troubled times, is a true friend. When you are prosperous, even the wicked will stand by you.

dṛśyate mitra-vidhvastāt kāryād vairī parīkṣitaḥ || 2.117 ||

No one is a friend and no one is an enemy forever. It is one’s behaviour and actions that are the true test of friendship or enmity.
