FIVE THINGS ARE DECIDED WHEN IN WOMB-PTML11

 SUBHASHITHANI:401

yacchan jalam api jalado vallabhatām eti sakala-lokasya |
nityaṃ prasārita-karo mitro 'pi na vīkṣituṃ śakyaḥ || 2.78 ||

A cloud giving mere water becomes dear to all people, while the sun with his hands (rays)always out-stretched is not capable of even being looked at.

sat-pātraṃ mahatī śraddhā deśe kāle yathocite |
yad dīyate viveka-jñais tad anantāya kalpate || 2.79 ||
Charity that is given to the deserving, at the appropriate time and place and with great faith and with clear discrimination between what is good and bad, its benefits are limitless.
atitṛṣṇā na kartavyā tṛṣṇāṃ naiva parityajet |
atitṛṣṇābhibhūtasya śikhā bhavati mastake || 2.80 ||
Extreme yearning should be avoided without rejecting desire itself. A person obsessed by greed is like a person whose head is as though aflame.

akṛte'py udyame puṃsām anya-janma-kṛtaṃ phalam |
śubhāśubhaṃ samabhyeti vidhinā saṃniyojitam || 2.81 ||

Even though no effort may be made for it, the good or bad fruit obtained from previous births, come to men as ordained by fate.

yasmin deśe cha kāle cha vayasā yādṛśena cha |
kṛtaṃ śubhāśubhaṃ karma tat tathā tena bhujyate || 2.82 ||

Just as good or evil done by a man in a by-gone life at a particular place, or time or stage of life, so is its fruit experienced by him.

śanaiḥ śanaiś ca bhoktavyaṃ svayaṃ vittam upārjitam |
rasāyanam iva prājñair helayā na kadācana || 2.83 ||

The wise enjoy the wealth earned by their own effort, in small doses, like taking a potent medicine, and not carelessly.

āyuḥ karma ca vittaṃ ca vidyā nidhanam eva ca |
pañcaitāni hi sṛjyante garbhasthasyaiva dehinaḥ || 2.84 ||

Duration of life, nature of profession, prosperity, knowledge and time of death of a person; these five are decided even while he is in the mother’s womb.

sakṛd api dṛṣṭvā puruṣaṃ vibudhā jānanti sāratāṃ tasya |
hasta-tulayāpi nipuṇāḥ pala-pramāṇā vijānanti || 2.85 ||

The wise men know the mettle of a person, just by a single glance. Experts can guess the weight of an object just by weighing it in their hands.
