A LITTLE CHARITY IS BETTER THAN HOARDING PLENTY -PTML-10

 SUBHASHITHANI:399

ūṣmāpi vittajo vṛddhiṃ tejo nayati dehinām |
kiṃ punas tasya sambhogas tyāga-dharma-samanvitaḥ || 2.70 ||

A man's luster increases When he feels the warmth of wealth; What to say when  his wealth is spent in enjoyment coupled with acts of charity.

nākasmāc chāṇḍilī mātar vikrīṇāti tilais tilān |
luñcitān itarair yena hetur atra bhaviṣyati || 2.71 ||
Shandili woman will not sell her pounded and cleansed sesame seeds for uncleansed ones; obviously there is some motive.

grāsād api tad ardhaṃ ca kasmān no dīyate'rthiṣu |
icchānurūpo vibhavaḥ kadā kasya bhaviṣyati || 2.72 ||

Even if one has very little, he should offer half of what he has to a hungry guest ; who in this world can say that he has everything he desired for?

īśvarā bhūri-dānena yal labhante phalaṃ kila |
daridras tac ca kākiṇyā prāpnuyād iti na śrutiḥ || 2.73 ||

It is well known from scriptures that a poor man obtains the same ‘punya’ by giving a Kakini( a meagre amount)which a rich man gets by gifting an expensive gift.

dātā laghur api sevyo bhavati na kṛpaṇo mahān api samṛddhyā |
kūpo 'ntaḥ-svādu-jalaḥ prītyai lokasya na samudraḥ || 2.74 ||

A poor man who gives even a little is praiseworthy; not a rich miser who refuses to part with his wealth. It is the small well with sweeet water which pleases men and not the ocean however vast it may be.

akṛta-tyāga-mahimnāṃ mithyā kiṃ rāja-rāja-śabdena |
goptāraṃ na nidhīnāṃ mahayanti maheśvaraṃ vibudhāḥ || 2.75 ||

What is the use of the title ‘Rajaraja’ who never gives any charity; Kubera, the guardian of wealth, is not called maheswara by the wise men.

sadā dāna-parikṣīṇaḥ śasta eva karīśvaraḥ |
adānaḥ pīna-gātro 'pi nindya eva hi gardabhaḥ || 2.76 ||

The lord of elephants who always manifests daana* ( *has two meanings- charity, rut juice )deserves praise even though lean; while an ass which does not give daana deserves to be despised even if fat-bellied.

suśīlo 'pi suvṛtto 'pi yāty adānād adho ghaṭaḥ |
punaḥ kubjāpi kāṇāpi dānād upari karkaṭī || 2.77 ||

Well-formed and well rounded a pot will go down by its not giving out water; where as a crooked, squint-eyed, ugly looking karkati( a type of vessel ) is kept up  because it gives out water.
