SUBHASHITHANI:403
न तथा बाध्यते लोके प्रकृत्या निर्धनो जनः ।
यथा द्रव्याणि सम्प्राप्य तैर् विहीनो ऽसुखे स्थितः ॥ ९४ ॥
na tathā
bādhyate loke prakṛtyā nirdhano janaḥ |
yathā dravyāṇi samprāpya tair vihīno 'sukhe sthitaḥ || 2.94 ||
A man born poor does not
suffer as much as a man who has enjoyed prosperity earlier, is deprived of it
later.
तरोर् अप्य् ऊषरस्थस्य वरं जन्म न चार्थिनः ॥ ९५ ॥
taror apy ūṣarasthasya varaṃ janma na cārthinaḥ || 2.95 ||
शङ्कनीया हि सर्वत्र निष्प्रतापा दरिद्रता ।
उपकर्तुम् अपि हि प्राप्तं निःस्वं सन्त्यज्य गच्छति ॥ ९६ ॥
śaṅkanīyā
hi sarvatra niṣpratāpā daridratā |
upakartum api hi prāptaṃ niḥsvaṃ santyajya gacchati || 2.96 ||
Poverty which eclipses one’s
prowess, causes suspicion everywhere, since a man goes away from a poor man
although come to confer some benefits.
கல்லானே யானாலுங் கைப்பொருளொன் றுண்டாயின்
எல்லாருஞ் சென்றங்கு எதிர்கொள்வர்-இல்லானை
இல்லாளும் வேண்டாள்மற்று ஈன்றெடுத்த தாய்வேணடாள்
செல்லாது அவன்வாயிற் சொல்.- Avvaiyar
Even if one is illiterate, as long as he is wealthy,
Everyone will welcome and attend to him;
A pauper is not wanted even by his wife,
Nor by the mother who delivered him;
His words go unheard. -Nalvazhi 34
पतन्ति हृदये व्यर्था विधवास्त्रीस्तना इव ॥ ९७ ॥
patanti hṛdaye vyarthā vidhavāstrīstanā iva || 2.97 ||
व्यक्तेऽपि वासरे नित्यं दौर्गत्य-तमसावृतः ।
अग्रतो ऽपि स्थितो यत्नान् न केनापीह दृश्यते ॥ ९८ ॥
vyakte'pi
vāsare nityaṃ daurgatya-tamasāvṛtaḥ |
agrato 'pi sthito yatnān na kenāpīha dṛśyate || 2.98 ||
Obscured by the darkness
of poverty a poor man is not noticed by any one even though standing just in
front and there be broad day light.
यत्-सकाशान् न लाभाः स्यात् केवलाः स्युर् विपत्तयः ।
स स्वामी दूरतस् त्याज्यो विशेषाद् अनुजीविभिः ॥ ९९ ॥
yat-sakāśān
na lābhāḥ syāt kevalāḥ syur vipattayaḥ |
sa svāmī dūratas tyājyo viśeṣād anujīvibhiḥ || 2.99 ||
That master, serving under
whom offers no benefits but only sufferings, should be abandoned from quite a
distance.
मृतो दरिद्रः पुरुषो मृतं मैथुनम् अप्रजम् ।
मृतम् अश्रोत्रियं श्राद्धं मृतो यज्ञस् त्व् अदक्षिणम् ॥ १०० ॥
mṛto
daridraḥ puruṣo mṛtaṃ maithunam aprajam |
mṛtam aśrotriyaṃ śrāddhaṃ mṛto yajñas tv adakṣiṇam || 2.100 ||
A poor man is as good as
dead; wedlock is useless without progeny; shraardham is useless without vedic
scholars being invited; and an Yagya is useless if no Dakshina is offered.

Poverty is a curse, more so for the newly poor. People throng to the rich but shun the poor. One advice to the deprived employee is to come away from the miserly master.
