LIGHT-DEEPA JYOTHI- (दीपज्योति)

SUBHASHITHANI:161
PRAYER BEFORE LIGHTING A LAMP:

ॐ शुभं करोति कल्याणं आरोग्यं धनसंपदः ।शत्रुबुद्धिविनाशाय दीपज्योतिनमोऽस्तु ते ॥
"Subham Karoti Kalyanam Arogyam Dhana Sampadah I
Shatru Buddhi Vinashaya Deepa Jyoti Namostute II
The  meaning of the mantra is: "I fold my hands before the light that brings prosperity, auspiciousness, good health, abundance of wealth and destruction of the enemy's intellect".

At night, the moon shows us the light. In the day we have the sun.
Dharma (the ideal code of conduct) shows us the light in all three worlds.
A good son is a shining lamp for the whole family.

Only after experiencing miseries, one can appreciate happiness, just as the sight of a lamp after experiencing thick darkness gives joy. One who experiences penury after luxury, lives as a dead man.

Eight qualities brighten a person: Intellect, good disposition, self-restraint, knowledge, valour, not talking too much, being charitable as per his (financial) strength and gratitude.
niketana antar dhvAntantu svalpa dIpena nashyati ।
iisha kRupA prasAdena ananta pApAni sarvadA ॥
A small wick light is enough to eliminate darkness from the insides of a house. Just like that even a small favor from God is enough to eliminate the ill-effects of all the sins committed in all the previous lives.
Of what purpose are pearls to animals and birds, sweet dishes and sweet drinks to donkeys, a lamp to the blind, a song to the deaf and a religious sermon to the fool?
vanāni dahato vahne sakhā bhavati māruta
sa eva dīpanāṣāya kṛśe kasyāsti sauhdam ॥  pañcatantra, kākolūkīya

For the fire that is burning forests, wind becomes a friend. The same (wind becomes) the cause in extinguishing a lamp. Who has affection for the weak?

Shhiraa shailee gunavataam khalabudhyaa na baadhate.
Ratnadeepasya hi shikha vaatyayaapi na naashyate.
The way of doing a task by wise and virtuous persons is very steady and long lasting and remains undisturbed by the impediments purposely created by mean and wicked persons,
just like a jewel  lamp ( ratna deepam )  which  gives out light   can not get extinguished even in a strong gust of wind.

Wise men listen to even small kids if they are talking appropriately.
Even a small lamp can illuminate darkness not touched by Sun.

" Oh Lord! You are the light to the whole universe. What are the sun, the moon, the stars etc  before you? They shine in borrowed splendour ; it is you who have endowed them with a brightness. Your dear consort Lakshmi - is' Daya incarnate' .She is splendour ,you being the source.

yathā dīpo nivāta-stho negate sopamā smitā

Just as a lamp in a windless place does not flicker, so the disciplined mind of a yogi remains steady in meditation on the self.

Vidura observes in the MahAbhArata, "One loses the discriminating intellect (pragyaa) by committing errors of judgment (pApa) again and again and one who has lost that ability keeps on repeating the same errors."

In spite of being burnt in fire again and again Gold does not lose its
lustre and colour, and similarly the stem of sugarcane on being cut into
pieces does not shed its sweet taste.   Sandalwood also does not give up
its fragrance  in spite of being rubbed again and again on a stone .   In
the same manner noble and righteous persons of highest integrity do not
allow any change in their nature and good behaviour even on the face of
imminent death.

One who is not liberal with his wealth in the previous birth , is born a poor . Being poor he indulges in sinful activities. That makes him suffer in hell (Narakam). Then again he is born a poor, indulges again in sin and the cycle continues.

BELOVED WIFE -KAANTAA- ( कान्ता)

SUBHASHITHANI:159
। Chanakya  niti

Sanmitram sadhanam swayoshiti ratishchaagyaaparaah.

Saadhoh sangmupaasate hi satatam dhanyo grahasthaashramah.
A person's family life is peaceful and successful if he has a comfortable house to live in, his children are wise and learned, his wife is not rude and ill speaking, he has good and reliable friends, he is faithful to his wife , has obedient servants, is hospitable to guests, and every day worships Lord Shiva and enjoys tasty food, and always keeps the company of noble persons. Surely blessed be such a householder.

Knowledge protects like a mother; direct towards beneficial endeavours like a father; like a wife takes away sadness and pleases; enables gaining wealth; spreads the fame in all four directions; Like the kalpalatha tree, what all aren’t achieved by means of Knowledge?

The following can burn our body without fire – departure of the wife, humiliation by our own people, unfinished battle, having to serve a bad king, poverty and a unfriendly assembly (of people who cannot decide right from wrong).

Who is your wife ? Who is your son ? Strange is this samsAra,  the world. Of whom are you ? From where have you come ?  Brother, ponder over these truths.

Kumbhakarna loved Sleep.  When he was killed by Rāma,  Sleep was widowed.
Now, she spends her time   visiting discourses and sermons.

The verse consists of deciphering long-winded relations to
arrive at the correct meaning (whereas a first look is misleading)
ahi = snake, ahi-ripuu = eagle, garuDaH, garuDa-pati = Master of garuDaH = vishhNu
vishhNu-kaantaa = wife of Vishnu = lakshhmii ,lakshhmii-taat = Father of Lakshmi = Ocean (saagarH)
saagara-saMbaddhaH = one who blocked/tied down the ocean = raamaH
raama-kaantaa = Ramas wife = siitaa , siitaa-har = one who abducted siitaa = raavaNaH
raavaNa-tanaya = Ravanas son = Indrajit ,indrajit-nihantR^i = one who killed Indrajit = lakshmaNaH
lakshmaNa-praaNadaatR^i = one who gave life to Lakshman = hanumaanaH
hanumaana-dvaja = One whose flag has Hanuman on it = Arjun ,arjuna-sakhi = Arjun’s friend = Krishna ,kR^ishhNa-suta = Krishna’s son = madana ,madana-suta = Madan’s son = aniruddha
aniruddha-kaanta = Aniruddha’s wife = ushhaa ,ushhaa-taata = Usha’s father = baaNaasura
baaNaasura-saMpuujya = one who is worshipped by Banasur = shivaH
shivaH-kaantaa = Shiva’s wife = Parvati  , paarvati-pitaa = Parvati’s father = Himalaya
It actually means, May jahnavi (the river Ganga), falling from the Himalayas, purify us.

Between one's wife and the wealth acquired by him (these two) there is always a state of  confusion , faithfulness and piety.  If the wife is virtuous and faithful and the wealth is acquired by fair means, then they both act as a ship to cross over the ocean of miseries of this World.

Rama ran from forest to forest, now jumping, now taking strong strides, but all the time weeping, like a madman busy in search of his beloved.
