ESSENCE OF RAMAYANA

SUBHASHITHANI: 151
 ( Who is Rama? )
Rama means spiritual reality
The Brahman, all spiritual, secondless, without parts, without body, is still looked upon as multiform, to serve the purpose of worship.—Rama tapaniya Upanishad 7,
( Who is Sita? )
That divine Being is threefold, through her power, namely, the power of desire, the power of action, the power of knowledge.—Sita Upanishad verse 11

yaanti nyaayapravrttasya tiryanco'pi sahaayataam |
apanthaanam tu gacchantam sodaro'pi vimuncati ||

To him who proceeds along the righteous path even the animals give a helping hand.
Even a brother deserts a person who takes to an unworthy path.

II Sankalpa Suryodaya

Darpodagra dasendriyaanana mano naktam chara dhishtate
Dehesmin bhave sindhunaa pari gate deenaam dasaaam aasthitah I
Adhyatve hanumat samena gurunaa prakhyaataarthah pumaan
Lankaa ruddha videha raja tanayaa nyaayena laalapyate II

Surrounded by the ocean of samsara, this  body is Lanka and the ten sense organs depicting the ten heads of Ravana ,overwhelmed by arrogance and unwisdom pulls in different directions. The mind subservient to these ten senses ,gets dragged away in to the darkness of samsara. Sita , the jivatma, is kept in captivity , by Ravana ( the mind with ten senses ) overpowered by lust and arrogance. But, the jivatma is re-united  happily with the paramatma ( Rama )  by the messages of the guru ( Hanuman ). When Rama takes over the body , he kills the Ravana inside.

Dasendriyaananam goram yo mano rajaneecharam I
Viveka shara jaalena shamam naayaati yoginaam II

The ten headed Ravana represents the ten Indriyas , which if uncontrolled can cause havoc , and lead the individual to a cycle of birth and death ( Ocean of Samsara- Lanka  ).

Through the multitude of arrows called ‘viveka’ ( The Rama bhana )the individual should control the sense organs and win over the mind.
