क्षान्त्या भीरुर्यदि न सहते प्रायशो नाभिजातः
सेवाधर्मः परमगहनो योगिनामप्यगम्यः ॥ --Niti shataka, 58
maunAnmUkaH pravachanapaTushchATulo jalpako vaa
dhRuShTaH pArshve vasati cha tadaa dUratashchApragalbhaH |
kShAntyA bhIruryadi na sahate prAyasho nAbhijAtaH
sevAdharmaH paramagahano yoginAmapyagamyaH ||
• If he is silent, he is dumb;
• if ready with his answer, he is talkative or garrulous;
• if he stands near, he is impudent;
• if he keeps at a distance, he is timid;
• if he bears patiently, he is a coward;
• if he cannot brook (harsh words, insult etc.), he is most probably considered manner less.
का चिन्ता मम जीवने यदि हरिर्विश्वंभरो गीयते
नो चेदभर्क जीवनार्थ जननीस्तन्यं कुतो निस्सरेत्

इत्यालोच्य मुहुर्मुहुर्यदु पते लक्ष्मी पते केवलं
त्वत् पादाम्बुज सेवनेन सततं कालो मया नीयते II Prayer-Chanakya Niti
Why should I worry for life as Lord Hari is the sustainer of the world. Had it not been so then how come a mother's breasts are filled with milk for her infant automatically?
Believing this, O spouse of Lakshmi! I pass my life devoted to service of your feet.
सेवस्व
स्वामिनं श्वेव काकवत् सौहृदं भज I
क्षमस्व रासभ इव न ते किंचन हीयते II
Do service like dog to your boss
. Be friendly to people like a crow. Bear with all the burden like an ass. You
will face no difficulties in life.
मौनान्मूकः प्रवचनपटुश्चाटुलो जल्पको वा
धृष्टः पार्श्वे वसति च तदा दूरतश्चाप्रगल्भः ।क्षान्त्या भीरुर्यदि न सहते प्रायशो नाभिजातः

--The dharma of
service is indeed the most difficult thing to do, even for sages.
कान्तावियोगः स्वजनाऽप्मानो ऋणाऽवशेषः कुनृपस्य

दरिद्रभवो विषमा सभा च विनाऽग्निमेते प्रदहन्ति कायम् ॥

Happenings that burn a man's body even without a fire (that is, give afflictions like burning):
• Separation of a beloved wife as (when she goes on a journey)
• Insult received from his own people
• The balance of a loan that he has obtained
• Doing service to a boss ( miser) who does not deserve it
• Remaining poor now due to some bad time after being rich
• Working in an organization that does not suit him.

पुत्रश्च मूर्खो विध्वा च कन्या विनाग्निना षट् प्रदहन्ति कायम् ॥
kugrAmavAsaH kulahIna sevA kubhojanaM krodhamukhi cha bhAryA |
putrashcha mUrkho vidhvA cha kanyA vinAgninA ShaT pradahanti kAyam ||
पुत्रश्च मूर्खो विध्वा च कन्या विनाग्निना षट् प्रदहन्ति कायम् ॥

Six other happenings that hurt
like fire:
• Living in hamlets that have no facilities (such as elders for guidance, drinking water,

education, medicine, temples)
• Serving people who don't deserve to have it
• Eating food that is not tasty, clean and could cause disease
• Living with a wife or husband who always finds faults and gets angry
• Begetting children who are stupid and can't be taught well with whatever efforts
• Keeping a widowed daughter at home after having given in marriage suitably.
उपदेक्ष्यन्ति ते ज्ञानं ज्ञानिनस्तत्त्वदर्शिन: || BG 4.34||
tad viddhi praṇipātena paripraśhnena sevayā I
upadekṣhyanti te jñānaṁ jñāninas tattva-darśhinaḥ
Learn the Truth by approaching a spiritual master. Inquire from him with reverence and render service unto him. Such an enlightened Saint can impart knowledge unto you because he has seen the Truth.

Of the remaining half, half is spent in childhood and old age; and the rest illnesses, bereavements, and vexatious service of others. Where is the happiness for creatures whose life is as fickle as the ripples of water?

Laziness, being at the beck and call of women, sickness, too much attachment with one's place of birth, contentedness with one's lot, and cowardice. these are the six impediments in the progress of a person in his life.
तद्विद्धि प्रणिपातेन परिप्रश्नेन सेवया |उपदेक्ष्यन्ति ते ज्ञानं ज्ञानिनस्तत्त्वदर्शिन: || BG 4.34||
