Veenaa Pustaka Dharineem AashrayeVegavaahineem Vaaneem Aashraye
I seek the blessings (“Aashraye”) of Goddess Saraswati, having in her hands (“Dharineem”), the sacred scriptures (“Pustaka”) and the instrument (“Vina”) of Vegavahini - the external manifestation of an internal emotion. Who is of the form of speech (“Vaaneem”).
पुस्तकेषु च या विद्या
परहस्ते च यद्धनम् |वेगवाहिनीं वाणीं आश्रये II Muthuswamy dikshitar

पुस्तकस्थापिता विद्या पर हस्त गतं धनं I
देशान्तर गतः पुत्रः नाममात्र मुपाचरेत् II
Pustakasthapitaa vidhyaa para hasta gatam dhanam I
Deshantara gatah putrah naamamaatra mupaacharet II
The knowledge confined to books ,wealth that is in other's custody, and a son who has gone abroad are useful in name only.
समये तु परिप्राप्ते
न सा विद्या न तद्धनम् ||
Pustakeshu cha yaa vidyaa parahaste cha yaddhanam I
Samaye tu paripraapte na saa vidyaa na taddhanam II
The knowledge that is there in the books and the wealth that is present in another person’s hand is not considered as knowledge and wealth respectively as they are not obtained in the right time (when the need is there).
पुस्तकं वनिता वित्तं परहस्तगतं गतम् |
अथवा पुनरागच्छेत् जीर्णं भ्रष्टा च खण्डश: |

Athavaa punaraagachet jeernam bhrashtaa cha khandashah II
Books, woman, wealth, these are lost once they are left in the custody of others. Even by chance they are returned , as soiled(books), as spoilt( woman), in bits and pieces (wealth ).
तैलाद् रक्षेत् जलाद् रक्षेत् रक्षेत् शिथिल बंधनात् ।
मूर्खस्य हस्ते न दातव्यं एवं वदति पुस्तकम् ॥

A book requests to protect it from oil, water and loose
binding. It also pleads not to hand it over to a fool!

शस्त्राण्यधीत्यापि भवन्ति मूर्खाः
यस्तु क्रियावान् पुरुषः स विध्वान् I
सुचिन्तितं चौषधं आतुराणां
न नाम मात्रेण करोत्यरोगं II
Shaastraan adheetyaapi bhavanti murkhaah;
yastu kriyaavaan purushah sa vidvaan I
Suchintitam chaushadam aaturaanaam
na nama maatrena karotyarogam II
People remain fools even after studying various scriptural texts ( if they do not apply them ) .He who acts is a learned man. A medicine which is well thought over cannot cure a patient of his disease by a mere mention of its name.

संग्रामे तु पुरे सैन्यं तिस्रः पुंसां विडम्बना: II
The learning that is confined only to books , the wealth that is in others' hands, the army stationed in the city during war, these are unproductive.
