PROCRASTINATION- DHEERGA SUTRATAA- (दीर्घसूत्रता।)

SUBHASHITHAM:157

उपकारान् स्मरेन्नित्यम् अपकारांश्च विस्मरेत् ।
शुभे शैघ्र्यं प्रकुर्वीत अशुभे दीर्घसूत्रता ॥ -वाल्मीकिरामायण
Upakaaraan smarennithyam apakaaraamscha vismaret I
Shubhe shaigryam prakurveeta ashube deergasootrataa II Valmiki Ramayana
One should always remember the favours (done by others) and forget the mean deeds. Do the good things at once, however postpone the unpleasant (inauspicious) ones.

नास्तिक्यमनृतं क्रोधं प्रमादं दीर्घसूत्रतां |
अदर्शनं ज्ञानवतामालस्यं पञ्चवृत्तितां || Valmiki Ramayana
Nastikyamanrutam krodham pramaadam deerga sutrataam I
Adarsanam gyanavatam aalasyam panchavrittitaam II
(  Rama’s advice to Bharatha )Do you abjure the following fourteen failings of kings,viz, Disbelief in the scriptures, mendacity(through greed etc ) , anger, neglect of kingly duties , procrastination, shunning the wise, sloth, slave of the five (senses ) , ....( * Only a portion of the sloka is mentioned here )
षड् दोषा: पुरुषेणेह हातव्या भूतिमिच्छिता।
 निद्रा तन्द्रा भयं क्रोध आलस्यं दीर्घसूत्रता।। Pancha tantra
Shad doshaah purusheneha haatavyaa bhootimichataa I
Nidraa, tandraa, bhayam, krodhah, aalasyam,deergasootrataa II
One who wants to prosper in this world, should avoid the following six faults :
Sleep (ie ignorance ), lethargy, fear, anger, laziness, and procrastination.
चत्वारि राज्ञा तु महाबलेनवर्ज्यान्याहुः पण्डितस्तानि विद्यात्
अल्पप्रज्ञैः सह मन्त्रं कुर्यान् दीर्घसूत्रैरलसैश्चारणैश्च ५८॥ Vidura Niti
Chatvaari ragya tu mahabalena varjyaanyahuh panditastaani vidyaat I
Alpagyah saha mantram na kuryaan  na deergasootrairalasairs chaaranaischa II
The wise declare that a king , though highly powerful, should avoid these four ,and a wise man should know them:  He should not take counsel of- 1.men of little wisdom , 2. Nor of the dilatory 
( deerga sootri ), 3. Of the indolent,4. Nor of the flattering bards.
நெடுநீர் மறவி மடிதுயில் நான்கும்
கெடுநீரார் காமக் கலன்.Kural-605
Procrastination, forgetfulness, idleness, and sleep, these four things, form the vessel which is desired by those destined to destruction.
अयुक्त: प्राकृत: स्तब्ध: शठो नैष्कृतिकोऽलस: |
विषादी दीर्घसूत्री कर्ता तामस उच्यते || BG 18.28||
ayukta prākita stabdha śhaho naihkitiko ‘lasa
vihādī dīrgha-sūtrī cha kartā tāmasa uchyate
A performer in the mode of ignorance ( taamasic ) is one who is undisciplined, vulgar, stubborn, deceitful, slothful, despondent, and procrastinating.
