KAKOLUKIYAM-PTKU7

 SUBHASHITHANI:424

Prajeevin rejected all three previous suggestions and preferred  (Asanam) as the best course of action; It would be advisable to go into a shell and wait in a  secure fortress, until the enemy attacks. 

नक्रः स्व-स्थानम् आसाद्य गजेन्द्रम् अपि कर्षति
एव प्रच्युतः स्थानाच् छुनापि परिभूयते ४५

nakraḥ sva-sthānam āsādya gajendram api karṣati |
sa eva pracyutaḥ sthānāc chunāpi paribhūyate || 3.45 ||

A crocodile staying in its own place (inside water)can fight (lit. drag)  an elephant; however out of water even a dog can overpower it.

நெடும்புனலுள் வெல்லும் முதலை அடும்புனலின்
நீங்கின் அதனைப் பிற.-Thirukkural 495
All powerful is the crocodile in deep water; but out of it, it is the plaything of its foes.

अभियुक्तो बलवता तिष्ठन् दुर्गे प्रयत्नवान्
तत्रस्थः सुहृदाह्वानं कुर्वीतात्म-विमुक्तये ४६
abhiyukto balavatā tiṣṭhan durge prayatnavān |
tatrasthaḥ suhṛdāhvānaṃ kurvītātma-vimuktaye || 3.46 ||
Attacked by a powerful enemy one should take shelter in a fortress putting forth efforts; he should then garner help from his friends for his release or escape.

यो रिपोर् आगमं श्रुत्वा भय-सन्त्रस्त-मानसः
स्व-स्थानं हि त्यजेत् तत्र तु भूयो विशेच् सः ४७
yo ripor āgamaṃ śrutvā bhaya-santrasta-mānasaḥ |
sva-sthānaṃ hi tyajet tatra na tu bhūyo viśec ca saḥ || 3.47 ||
He who, having heard the approach of an enemy, is bewildered by fear, and leaves his place will not able to return there.

दंष्ट्रा-विरहितः सर्पो मद-हीनो यथा गजः
स्थान-हीनस् तथा राजा गम्यः स्यात् सर्व-जन्तुषु ४८

daṃṣṭrā-virahitaḥ sarpo mada-hīno yathā gajaḥ |
sthāna-hīnas tathā rājā gamyaḥ syāt sarva-jantuṣu || 3.48 ||

Like a serpent without fangs or an elephant without rut, a king who is out of his own place is easily assailable by all and sundry.

निज-स्थान-स्थितो ऽप्य् एकः शतं योद्धुं सहेन् नरः
शक्तानाम् अपि शत्रूणां तस्मात् स्थानं सन्त्यजेत् ४९

nija-sthāna-sthito 'py ekaḥ śataṃ yoddhuṃ sahen naraḥ |

śaktānām api śatrūṇāṃ tasmāt sthānaṃ na santyajet || 3.49 ||

One stationed securely in his own place can face even hundred warriors and defeat them; therefore, one should not leave one’s safe haven at any cost.

तस्माद् दुर्गं दृढं कृत्वा सुभटासार-संयुतम्
प्राकार-परिखा-युक्तं शस्त्रादिभिर् अलङ्कृतम् ५०

तिष्ठेन् मध्य-गतो नित्यं युद्धाय कृत-निश्चयः
जीवन् सम्प्राप्त्स्यति राज्यं मृतो वा स्वर्गम् एष्यति ५१ (युग्मकम्)

tasmād durgaṃ dṛḍhaṃ kṛtvā subhaṭāsāra-saṃyutam |
prākāra-parikhā-yuktaṃ śastrādibhir alaṅkṛtam || 3.50 ||

tiṣṭhen madhya-gato nityaṃ yuddhāya kṛta-niścayaḥ |
jīvan samprāptsyati rājyaṃ mṛto vā svargam eṣyati || 3.51 || (yugmakam)

yugmakam- means the two slokas should be taken together.

Therefore, having strengthened a fortress, ensuring all provisions and warriors to protect, surrounding it with a rampart and a ditch and embellishing it with various weaponry, one should wait in it,  ever ready to fight; for if one is victorious he gets his kingdom otherwise one goes to heaven.

बलिनापि बाध्यन्ते लघवो ऽप्य् एक-संश्रयाः
विपक्षेणापि मरुता यथैक-स्थान-वीरुधाः ५२

balināpi na bādhyante laghavo 'py eka-saṃśrayāḥ |
vipakṣeṇāpi marutā yathaika-sthāna-vīrudhāḥ ||3.52 ||

The strong men acting adversely are not in a position to trouble weak men who live in one place; as creepers growing together in one place are not affected by strong winds trying to blow it away.

PANCHA TANTRA KAKOLUKIYAM-PTKU-6

 SUBHASHITHANI:423

स्वस्थानं सुदृढं कृत्वा शूरैश् चातैर् महाबलैः
पर-देशं ततो गच्छेत् प्रणिधि-व्याप्तम् अग्रतः ३९

svasthānaṃ sudṛḍhaṃ kṛtvā śūraiś cātair mahābalaiḥ |
para-deśaṃ tato gacchet praṇidhi-vyāptam agrataḥ || 3.39 ||

Having ensured that his own country is well protected with men who are brave, trust worthy and possessed of great strength, one should embark on aggressive march against enemy country, which is already occupied by his own spies.

 अज्ञातवी-वधासार-तोय-शस्यो व्रजेत् तु यः
पर-राष्ट्रं भूयः स्व-राष्ट्रम् अधिगच्छति ४०
ajñātavī-vadhāsāra-toya-śasyo vrajet tu yaḥ |
para-rāṣṭraṃ na bhūyaḥ sa sva-rāṣṭram adhigacchati || 3.40 ||
One who is not fully familiar with the roads, provisions including water sources, attacks an enemy country, it would be difficult for him even to retreat successfully.

तन् युक्तं प्रभो कर्तुं द्वितीयं यानम् एव
विग्रहो सन्धानं बलिना तेन पापिना ४१

tan na yuktaṃ prabho kartuṃ dvitīyaṃ yānam eva ca |
na vigraho na sandhānaṃ balinā tena pāpinā || 3.41 ||

Therefore, o king, it is not suited for you to adopt the second yaanam (to attack an enemy); you should neither enter in to a war nor seek an alliance with the wicked and powerful enemy.

 यद् अपसरति मेषः कारणं तत् प्रहर्तुं
मृग-पतिर् अपि कोपात् सङ्कुचत्य् उत्पतिष्णुः
हृदय-निहित-भावा गूढ-मन्त्र-प्रचाराः

किम् अपि विगणयन्तो बुद्धिमन्तः सहन्ते ४२

yad apasarati meṣaḥ kāraṇaṃ tat prahartuṃ

 mṛga-patir api kopāt saṅkucaty utpatiṣṇuḥ |
hṛdaya-nihita-bhāvā gūḍha-mantra-pracārāḥ

 kim api vigaṇayanto buddhimantaḥ sahante || 3.42 ||

A ram withdraws back only to attack with greater force; the lion too contracts to pounce with greater ferocity; with their motives hidden in their hearts and without letting out their secrets to anyone , great men put up with anything waiting for an opportune time.

ஊக்க முடையான் ஒடுக்கம் பொருதகர்
தாக்கற்குப் பேருந் தகைத்து.-Thirukkural 486
The ram steps back before it delivers a stunning blow; Even such is the inaction of the man of energy.

बलवन्तं रिपुं दृष्ट्वा देश-त्यागं करोति यः
युधिष्ठिर इवाप्नोति पुनर् जीवन् मेदिनीम् ४३

balavantaṃ ripuṃ dṛṣṭvā deśa-tyāgaṃ karoti yaḥ |
yudhiṣṭhira ivāpnoti punar jīvan sa medinīm || 3.43 ||

One who finds his enemy to be powerful and leaves his country, like Yudhishtira will live and regain his kingdom.

युध्यतेऽहङ्कृतिं कृत्वा दुर्बलो यो बलीयसा
तस्य वाञ्छितं कुर्याद् आत्मनश् कुल-क्षयम् ४४

yudhyate'haṅkṛtiṃ kṛtvā durbalo yo balīyasā |
sa tasya vāñchitaṃ kuryād ātmanaś ca kula-kṣayam || 3.44 ||

A weak king fighting due to pride against a powerful enemy, will fall in to the trap of his enemy and brings destruction to his own family.

Anujeevin concluded by saying that it is neither desirable to look for peace nor get in to war with a powerful and unscrupulous enemy but go in to hiding, waiting for opportune time.

The king then invited yet another minister by name Prajeevin and requested for his opinion.

PANCHA TANTRA KAKOLUKIYAM-PTKU-5

 SUBHASHITHANI:422

मृत्योर् इवोग्र-दण्डस्य राज्ञो यान्ति वशं द्विषः
सर्वंसहं तु मन्यन्ते तृणाय रिपवश् तम् ३१
mṛtyor ivogra-daṇḍasya rājño yānti vaśaṃ dviṣaḥ |
sarvaṃsahaṃ tu manyante tṛṇāya ripavaś ca tam || 3.31 ||
Enemies fear that king who dispenses severe punishment like the lord of death (Yama); but treat him like dust (lit. grass) one who puts up with everything.

जातु शमनं यस्य तेजस् तेजस्वि-तेजसाम्
वृथा जातेन किं तेन मातुर् यौवन-हारिणा ३२

na jātu śamanaṃ yasya tejas tejasvi-tejasām |
vṛthā jātena kiṃ tena mātur yauvana-hāriṇā || 3.32 ||

What is the use of being born in a noble family, if his valour does not help him in destroying his powerful enemies; he will only be considered as one who destroyed the youth of his mother.

या लक्ष्मीर् नानुलिप्ताङ्गी वैर्-शोणित-कुङ्कुमैः
कान्तापि मनसः प्रीतिं सा धत्ते मनस्विनाम् ३३

yā lakṣmīr nānuliptāṅgī vair-śoṇita-kuṅkumaiḥ |
kāntāpi manasaḥ prītiṃ na sā dhatte manasvinām || 3.33 ||

That wealth which is not marked with the saffron in the form of blood of the enemies, though covetable, is not appreciated by wise men. 

रिपु-रक्तेन संसिक्ता तत्-स्त्री-नेत्राम्बुभिस् तथा
भूमिर् यस्य भूपस्य का श्लाघा तस्य जीविते ३४

ripu-raktena saṃsiktā tat-strī-netrāmbubhis tathā |
na bhūmir yasya bhūpasya kā ślāghā tasya jīvite || 3.34 ||

what  praise can be there to a king whose territory is not Sprinkled with the blood of the enemies and with the waters of the tears of their wives?

The king then called yet another minister by name Anujeevin and asked for his opinion:

बलोत्कटेन दुष्टेन मर्यादा-रहितेन  
 सन्धि-विग्रहौ नैव विना यानं प्रशस्यते  ३५ 
balotkaṭena duṣṭena maryādā-rahitena ca |
na sandhi-vigrahau naiva vinā yānaṃ praśasyate || 3.35 ||
Neither seeking peace, nor waging war, is considered desirable when dealing with a strong, wicked and unscrupulous enemy.

द्विधाकारं भवेद् यानं भवेत् प्राणार्थ-रक्षणम् 
एकम् अन्यज् जिगीषोश्  यात्रालक्षणम् उच्यते  ३६ 
dvidhākāraṃ bhaved yānaṃ bhavet prāṇārtha-rakṣaṇam | 
ekam anyaj jigīṣoś ca yātrālakṣaṇam ucyate
 || 3.36 ||
The strategy of moving ( Yaanam) is of two types.: One is when you escape in fright in order to save your life and property ; the other is when you march forward to conquer an enemy.

कार्त्तिके वाथ चैत्रे वा विजिगीषोः प्रशस्यते 
यानम् उत्कृष्ट-वीर्यस्य शत्रु-देशे  चान्यदा  ३७ 
kārttike vātha caitre vā vijigīṣoḥ praśasyate |
yānam utkṛṣṭa-vīryasya śatru-deśe na cānyadā || 3.37 ||
The months of kruttikaa or Chaitra are considered propitious for an expedition in to an enemy’s territory by a powerful conqueror.
 अवस्कन्द-प्रदानस्य सर्वे कालाः प्रकीर्तिताः 
व्यसने वर्तमानस्य शत्रोच्छिद्रान्वितस्य   ३८ 
avaskanda-pradānasya sarve kālāḥ prakīrtitāḥ |
vyasane vartamānasya śatrocchidrānvitasya ca || 3.38 ||
When an enemy is in great difficulties or suffering certain weaknesses, any time is considered as suitable for carrying out an attack.
