GREED AND IT'S IMPACT - PTML-21

Mantharaka, the turtle, said to the deer Chitraanga, “the scriptures have mentioned two ways of escaping danger. One is to use your muscle power and another is to run as fast as you can. Now, run into the forest before the hunter could come.”- Sloka 2.169

अनिंद्यम् अपि निंदंति स्तुवंत्य् अस्तुत्यम् उच्चकैः।
स्वापतॆय-कृते  मर्त्याः किं किं ̣ नाम कुर्वतॆ II
Anindyam api nindati stuvantyah astutyam ucchakaih I
Svaapateya krute martyaah kim kim naam ana kurvate II2.161
What will not men do for the sake of acquiring wealth? They abuse those who deserve to be not censured and shower lavish praise on those totally unworthy of praise
.


धर्मार्थं यस्य वित्तेहा तस्यापि शुभावहा
प्रक्षालनाद्द् हि पङ्कस्य दूराद् अस्पर्शनं वरम् १६२

dharmārthaṃ yasya vittehā tasyāpi na śubhāvahā |
prakṣālanādd hi paṅkasya dūrād asparśanaṃ varam || 2.162 ||

Desire for wealth even if it is for religious duties, it is preferable to avoid it; It is better not to touch mud instead of washing it off afterwards.

दानेन तुल्यो निधिर् अस्ति नान्यो
लोभाच् नान्यो ऽस्ति परः पृथिव्याम्
विभूषणं शील-समं चान्यत्
सन्तोष-तुल्यं धनम् अस्ति नान्यत् १६३
dānena tulyo nidhir asti nānyo
lobhāc ca nānyo 'sti paraḥ pṛthivyām |
vibhūṣaṇaṃ śīla-samaṃ na cānyat
 santoṣa-tulyaṃ dhanam asti nānyat || 2.163 ||
There is no ritual (vidhi) that is more noble than giving ( daana) , there is no worse enemy than greed . There is no better ornament than good character, there is no better wealth than contentment (santosha) .

दारिद्र्यस्य परा मूर्तिर् यन् मान-द्रविणाल्पता
जरद्-गव-धनः शर्वस् तथापि परमेश्वरः १६४

dāridryasya parā mūrtir yan māna-draviṇālpatā |
jarad-gava-dhanaḥ śarvas tathāpi parameśvaraḥ || 2.164 ||

 Lack of self-respect is the worst form of poverty; LordShiva with a just an old bull as his wealth, is still respected as the lord of lords.

सुलभाः पुरुषा राजन् सततं प्रिय-वादिनः
अप्रियस्य पथ्यस्य वक्ता श्रोता दुर्लभः १६६

sulabhāḥ puruṣā rājan satataṃ priya-vādinaḥ |
apriyasya ca pathyasya vaktā śrotā ca durlabhaḥ || 2.166 ||

"O, king! Men who forever speak pleasing words are easy to be obtained. But one who speaks of useful but unpleasant words (but medicinal) as also the one who listens to them, are rare to be obtained"

अप्रियाण्य् अपि पथ्यानि ये वदंति नृणाम् इह।
त एव सुहृदः प्रोक्ता अन्ये स्युर् नाम-धारकाः॥पञ्च_२.१६७॥
apriyāṇy api pathyāni ye vadanti nṛṇām iha |
ta eva suh
da proktā anye syur nāma-dhārakāḥ ||2.167 ||
They are called true friends who speak to men things which are wholesome
though disagreeable.

भय-त्रस्तो नरः श्वासं प्रभूतं कुरुते मुहुः
दिशो ऽवलोकयत्य् एव स्वास्थ्यं व्रजति क्वचित् १६८

bhaya-trasto naraḥ śvāsaṃ prabhūtaṃ kurute muhuḥ |
diśo 'valokayaty eva na svāsthyaṃ vrajati kvacit || 2.168 ||

One who is frightened by fear breaths fast and forcibly, looks around but finds no peace.

द्वाव् उपायाव् इह प्रोक्तौ विमुक्तौ शत्रु-दर्शने
हस्तयोश् चालनाद् एको द्वितीयः पाद-वेग-जः १६९

dvāv upāyāv iha proktau vimuktau śatru-darśane |
hastayoś cālanād eko dvitīyaḥ pāda-vega-jaḥ || 2.169 ||

Two escape routes are prescribed when a powerful enemy appears; one with the skillful use of the hands and the second by fleeing swiftly from the place.
