सर्वंसहं तु मन्यन्ते तृणाय रिपवश् च तम् ॥ ३१ ॥
sarvaṃsahaṃ tu manyante tṛṇāya ripavaś ca tam || 3.31 ||
न जातु शमनं यस्य तेजस् तेजस्वि-तेजसाम् ।
वृथा जातेन किं तेन मातुर् यौवन-हारिणा ॥ ३२ ॥
na jātu
śamanaṃ yasya tejas tejasvi-tejasām |
vṛthā jātena kiṃ tena mātur yauvana-hāriṇā || 3.32 ||
What is the use of being
born in a noble family, if his valour does not help him in destroying his
powerful enemies; he will only be considered as one who destroyed the youth of
his mother.
या लक्ष्मीर् नानुलिप्ताङ्गी वैर्-शोणित-कुङ्कुमैः ।
कान्तापि मनसः प्रीतिं न सा धत्ते मनस्विनाम् ॥ ३३ ॥
yā lakṣmīr nānuliptāṅgī
vair-śoṇita-kuṅkumaiḥ |
kāntāpi manasaḥ
prītiṃ na sā dhatte manasvinām ||
3.33 ||
That wealth which is not marked
with the saffron in the form of blood of the enemies, though covetable, is not
appreciated by wise men.
रिपु-रक्तेन संसिक्ता तत्-स्त्री-नेत्राम्बुभिस् तथा ।
न भूमिर् यस्य भूपस्य का श्लाघा तस्य जीविते ॥ ३४ ॥
ripu-raktena
saṃsiktā tat-strī-netrāmbubhis tathā |
na bhūmir yasya bhūpasya kā ślāghā tasya jīvite || 3.34 ||
what praise can be there to a king whose territory is
not Sprinkled with the blood of the enemies and with the waters of the tears of
their wives?
The king then called yet another minister by name Anujeevin and asked for his opinion:
न सन्धि-विग्रहौ नैव विना यानं प्रशस्यते ॥ ३५ ॥
balotkaṭena duṣṭena maryādā-rahitena ca |
na sandhi-vigrahau naiva vinā yānaṃ praśasyate || 3.35 ||
Neither seeking peace, nor waging war, is considered desirable when dealing with a strong, wicked and unscrupulous enemy.
द्विधाकारं भवेद् यानं भवेत् प्राणार्थ-रक्षणम् ।
एकम् अन्यज् जिगीषोश् च यात्रालक्षणम् उच्यते ॥ ३६ ॥
dvidhākāraṃ
bhaved yānaṃ bhavet prāṇārtha-rakṣaṇam |
ekam anyaj jigīṣoś ca yātrālakṣaṇam ucyate || 3.36 ||
The
strategy of moving ( Yaanam) is of two types.: One is when you escape in fright
in order to save your life and property ; the other is when you march forward
to conquer an enemy.
यानम् उत्कृष्ट-वीर्यस्य शत्रु-देशे न चान्यदा ॥ ३७ ॥
kārttike vātha caitre vā vijigīṣoḥ praśasyate |
yānam utkṛṣṭa-vīryasya śatru-deśe na cānyadā || 3.37 ||
The months of kruttikaa or Chaitra are considered propitious for an expedition in to an enemy’s territory by a powerful conqueror.
व्यसने वर्तमानस्य शत्रोच्छिद्रान्वितस्य च ॥ ३८ ॥
avaskanda-pradānasya sarve kālāḥ prakīrtitāḥ |
vyasane vartamānasya śatrocchidrānvitasya ca || 3.38 ||
When an enemy is in great difficulties or suffering certain weaknesses, any time is considered as suitable for carrying out an attack.
