FURTHER COUNSEL ON WAR AND PEACE- PTKU-4

 SUBHASHITHANI:421

King (crow) Megavarna's counsel with his ministers continues. “My dear king”, said Sanjeevin, “I am of the opinion that seeking an alliance with a stronger enemy is undesirable.". When asked about his choice he continued as follows:

śatruṇā na hi sandadhyāt suśliṣṭenāpi sandhinā |
sutaptam api pānīyaṃ śamayaty eva pāvakam ||3.23 ||
One should not make friends with an enemy, even if he seeks a truce. Because, even when the water is hot it will still extinguish fire.
satya-dharma-vihīnena na sandadhyāt kathañcana |
sugandhito 'py asādhutvād acirād yāti vikriyām || 3.24 ||
One should never ally with one who is destitute of truthfulness and righteousness; for , even though firmly allied, he would ditch at crucial times due to his inherent wicked nature.

krūro lubdho 'laso 'satyaḥ pramādī bhīrur asthiraḥ |
mūḍho yodhāvamantā ca sukhocchedyo bhaved ripuḥ || 3.25 ||

An enemy who is cruel, greedy, lazy, untruthful, callous, timid, unsteady, foolish, disrespectful to warriors, can easily be destroyed.

He who neither refrains from anger nor keeps his secrets will at all times and in all places be easily conquered by all.
A king who is tactless, cares not for honour, neglects science of politics and neglects its dictates; verily he is an easy target for his enemies.

caturthopāya-sādhye tu ripau sāntvam apakriyā |
svedyam āma-jvaraṃ prājñaḥ ko 'mbhasā pariṣiñcati || 3.26 ||

When ‘danda’- using force is a feasible option to fight an enemy, seeking peace or alliance  is not the desired choice. Who will sprinkle cold water on a person who has fever, when sweating itself can be the cure?

sāmavādāḥ sakopasya śatroḥ pratyuta dīpikāḥ |
prataptasyeva sahasā sarpiṣas toya-bindavaḥ || 3.27 ||
Talking of peace only aggravates the anger of an enemy, as drops of water falling on boiling oil ( lit.ghee ) causes greater agitation.

pramāṇābhyadhikasyāpi mahat-sattvam adhiṣṭhitaḥ |
padaṃ mūrdhni samādhatte kesarī matta-dantinaḥ || 3.28 ||
 A lion puts his foot on top of an intoxicated elephant, even though larger in size, having faith in his superior strength.

utsāha-śakti-sampanno hanyāc chatruṃ laghur gurum |
yathā kaṇṭhīravo nāgaṃ bhāradvājaḥ pracakṣate || 3.29 ||

A small man, endowed with energy and enthusiasm, can destroy a more powerful enemy; just as a lion does to an elephant.So said Bharadvaj.

māyayā śatravo vadhyā avadhyāḥ syur balena ye |
yathā strī-rūpam āsthāya hato bhīmena kīcakaḥ || 3.30 ||

Those enemies who can not be defeated by direct action, should be killed by using deceit; as Bhima killed Keechaka by the disguise of a woman.
