सुभाषित-रसास्वाद-बद्ध-रोमाञ्च-कञ्चुकं ।
विनापि संगमं स्त्रीणां कवीनां सुखम् एधते ॥ १७० ॥
subhāṣita-rasāsvāda-baddha-romāñca-kañcukaṃ |
vināpi saṃgamaṃ strīṇāṃ kavīnāṃ sukham edhate || 2.170 ||
Wise men, who wear the
cloaks of horripilation (Romaanjhanam) by tasting the flavour of subhashithani,
have no value for other carnal pleasures.
सुभाषित-मय-द्रव्य-सङ्ग्रहं न करोति यः ।
स तु प्रस्ताव-यज्ञेषु कां प्रदास्यति दक्षिणाम् ॥ १७१ ॥
subhāṣita-maya-dravya-saṅgrahaṃ
na karoti yaḥ |
sa tu prastāva-yajñeṣu kāṃ pradāsyati dakṣiṇām || 2.171 ||
If one is not well-versed
in knowing a lot of wise sayings and anecdotes, what can he provide as his
offering when conversing with wise men.
सकृद् उक्तं न गृह्णाति स्वयं वा न करोति यः ।
यस्य संपुटिका नास्ति कुतस् तस्य सुभाषितम् ॥ १७२ ॥
sakṛd
uktaṃ na gṛhṇāti svayaṃ vā na karoti yaḥ |
yasya saṃpuṭikā nāsti kutas tasya subhāṣitam ||2.172 ||
How can one deliver a wise
saying in a conversation who does not grasp what is said once to him or
reproduce it himself or does not possess a good collection of choice sayings?
स्व-गृहोद्यान-गतेऽपि स्निग्धैः पापं विशङ्क्यते मोहात् ।
किम् उ दृष्ट-बह्व्-अपाय-प्रतिभय-कान्तार-मध्य-स्थे ॥ १७३ ॥
sva-gṛhodyāna-gate'pi
snigdhaiḥ pāpaṃ viśaṅkyate mohāt |
kim u dṛṣṭa-bahv-apāya-pratibhaya-kāntāra-madhya-sthe || 2.173 ||
Those who are fondly
attached to some one. fear an evil occurring to him even when he steps out to his
own garden; what then in a case of a person living in the midst of a forest
where many dangers are seen?
अपि मन्दत्वम् आपन्नो नष्टो वापीष्ट-दर्शनात् ।
प्रायेण प्राणिनां भूयो दुःखावेगो ऽधिको भवेत् ॥ १७४ ॥
api
mandatvam āpanno naṣṭo vāpīṣṭa-darśanāt |
prāyeṇa prāṇināṃ bhūyo duḥkhāvego 'dhiko bhavet || 2.174 ||
It is natural for grief, that has reduced
or gone away completely, to return with great speed again at the sight of a
friend or relative.
प्राणात्यये समुत्पन्ने यदि स्यान् मित्र-दर्शनं ।
तद् द्वाभ्यां सुख-दं पश्चाज् जीवतो ऽपि मृतस्य च ॥ १७५ ॥
tad dvābhyāṃ sukha-daṃ paścāj jīvato 'pi mṛtasya ca || 2.175 ||
afterwards, whether he lives or dies.
अज्ञानाज् ज्ञानतो वापि दुरुक्तं यद् उदाहृतम् ।
मया तत् क्षम्यताम् अद्य द्वाभ्याम् अपि प्रसादतः ॥ १७६ ॥
ajñānāj
jñānato vāpi duruktaṃ yad udāhṛtam |
mayā tat kṣamyatām adya dvābhyām api prasādataḥ || 2.176 ||
Both of you should forgive
me, if I have said anything harsh, knowingly or unknowingly, with a mind full
of love and affection.
आपन्-नाशाय विबुधैः कर्तव्याः सुहृदो ऽमलाः ।
न तरत्य् आपदं कश्चिद् यो ऽत्र मित्र-विवर्जितः ॥ १७८ ॥
āpan-nāśāya
vibudhaiḥ kartavyāḥ suhṛdo 'malāḥ |
na taraty āpadaṃ kaścid yo 'tra mitra-vivarjitaḥ || 2.178 ||
In order to tide over
difficulties wise men should make friends with spot-less persons. One can never
tide over a crisis if he is alone without friends.
कृतान्त-पाश-बद्धानां दैवोपहत-चेतसां ।
बुद्धयः कुब्ज-गामिन्यो भवन्ति महताम् अपि ॥ १७९ ॥
kṛtānta-pāśa-baddhānāṃ
daivopahata-cetasāṃ |
buddhayaḥ
kubja-gāminyo bhavanti mahatām api ||2.179
||
Even wise men of great
talent are led astray when they are caught in the snares of death and whose
power of judgement is obscured by unfavourable destiny.
विधात्रा रचिता या सा ललाटेऽक्षर-मालिका ।
न तां मार्जयितुं शक्ताः स्व-शक्त्याप्य् अतिपण्डिताः ॥ १८० ॥
vidhātrā
racitā yā sā lalāṭe'kṣara-mālikā |
na tāṃ mārjayituṃ śaktāḥ sva-śaktyāpy atipaṇḍitāḥ || 2.180 ||
Even profoundly learned
men cannot wipe off what has been written in their foreheads by the creator,
with all their scholarship.
