MITRALABHA-5-GAINING OF FRIENDS

 SUBHASHITHANI:511

sa bandhur yo vipannānām āpad-uddharaṇa-kṣamaḥ |
na tu bhīta-paritrāṇa-vastūpālambha-paṇḍitaḥ || 1.31 ||

He is a friend of the afflicted who protects them from calamities, and not one, who is an expert in condemning a thing ill done or omitted to be done.

vipadi dhairyam athābhyudaye kṣamā

sadasi vākya-paṭutā yudhi vikramaḥ |
yaśasi cābhirucir vyasanaṃ śrutau

prakṛti-siddham idaṃ hi mahātmanām || 1.32 ||

Courage in trouble, forbearance in prosperity, eloquence in the assembly, valour in battle, eagerness in gaining fame, attention to the holy scriptures-–all these are natural to great ones.

sampadi yasya na harṣo vipadi viṣādo raṇe ca bhīrutvam |
taṃ bhuvana-traya-tilakaṃ janayati jananī sutaṃ viralam || 1.33 ||

A person who is not elated by becoming rich, is not depressed while facing danger and never loses the presence of mind while engaged in a battle (conflict) is adorned everywhere. Only an exceptional mother gives birth to such a child.

ṣaḍ-doṣāḥ puruṣeṇeha hātavyā bhūtim icchatā |
nidrā tandrā bhayaṃ krodha ālasyaṃ dīrgha-sūtratā || 1.34 ||

A man wishing to prosper in this world, should leave six bad qualities - extra sleep, lethargy, fear, anger, laziness and procrastination.

alpānām api vastūnāṃ saṃhatiḥ kārya-sādhikā |
tṛṇair guṇatvam āpannair badhyante matta-dantinaḥ || 1.35 ||

Even individually weak objects when united helps to achieve great  things. Just as rope made up of straws can be used to bind a mad elephant.

saṃhatiḥ śreyasī puṃsāṃ svakulair alpakair api |
tuṣeṇāpi parityaktā na prarohanti taṇḍulāḥ || 1.36 ||

Success comes to only those people who stick by their fellow beings even if they are weak. A seed of rice cannot grow into a plant if it abandons the husk.

saṃhatās tu haranty ete mama jālaṃ vihaṅgamāḥ |
yadā tu nipatiṣyanti vaśam eṣyanti me tadā || 1.37 ||

These birds, being combined, are taking away my net; but soon they will fall down and will come in to my control.

mātā mitraṃ pitā ceti svabhāvāt tritayaṃ hitam |
kārya-kāraṇataś cānye bhavanti hita-buddhayaḥ || 1.38 ||

Mother, Father and friends, these three are by nature are helpful to one. But, others who help us are doing it for some selfish-motive.

VRITHAA-वृथा- WASTE, USELESS

 SUBHASHITHANI:511

vRithA vRiShTiH samudreShu, vRithA tRipteShu bhojanaM |
vRithA dAnaM dhanADhyeShu, vRithA dIpo divApi cha ||
Rain on the seas, feeding the well fed, charity given to the rich
And lighting a lamp during day time are all a waste.

Aayushh kshana ekopi sarvaratnena labhyate I
naayate sa vrathaa yena pramaadh sumahaanho II
Even a single second in life cannot be obtained back by all precious jewels. Hence spending it wastefully is a great mistake.

yathA astra rahite pumsi vRuthA shaurya parigrahaH
tathA upanyAsa hInasya vRuthA shAstra parigrahaH

A soldier may be very brave and courageous. His courage is useless if he does not have any weapons. Just like that, having lot of knowledge is useless if you cannot articulate it well so that other people can understand.

Those who are unable to set forth their acquirements (before others) are like flowers blossoming in a cluster and yet without fragrance.

Satya heenaa vrutaa poojaa satyaheeno vrutaa japah I
Satyaheenam tapo vyartam ooshare vapanam yathaa II
Worship devoid of truth is a waste; Japam without truth is useless; Austerities without truth is also in vain, just as sowing seed in barren land.

Ramayana -6.65.3
Garjanti na vruthhaa shooraah nirjalaa iva toyadaah..
"Warriors do not roar in vain as waterless clouds. Hear my roar, only on completion of my said task in battle."

(These are the words of Kumbhakarna addressed to Ravana)

Daanam poojaa tapaschaiva teerta sevaa shrutam tathaa I
Sarvameva vritha tasya yasya shuddham na maanasah II
Charity, prayer, austerity, visiting sacred rivers, and listening to scriptures All these actions will be in vain for a man whose mind is not pure.

na dehināṁ sukhaṁ kiñcid vidyate viduṣām api I
tathā ca duḥkhaṁ mūḍhānāṁ vṛthāhaṅkaraṇaṁ param II
It is observed within the material world that sometimes even an intelligent person is not happy. Similarly, sometimes even a great fool is happy. The concept of becoming happy through expertly performing material activities is simply a useless exhibition of false egotism. ( Prabhu pada)

MITRALABHA-4-GAINING OF FRIENDS

 SUBHASHITHANI:510

The ignorant mind, with its infinite afflictions, passions, and evils, is rooted in the three poisons. Greed, anger, and delusion. Gautama Buddha

GREED LEADS TO MISFORTUNE

śaṅkābhiḥ sarvam ākrāntam annaṃ pānaṃ ca bhūtale |
pravṛttiḥ kutra kartavyā jīvitavyaṃ kathaṃ na vā || 1.24 ||

Everything in this world, food and drink, is seized by doubt; how should one proceed in his actions and how should life be supported?
( Rejecting the leader’s advice one of the birds is advising other birds to eat the grains - thrown all over by the hunter to trap them)

īrṣyī ghṛṇī tv asantuṣṭaḥ krodhano nitya-śaṅkitaḥ |
para-bhāgyopajīvī ca ṣaḍ ete nitya-duḥkhitāḥ || 1.25 ||

One who envies, one who hates, one who is not content, one who is always angry, one who is always suspicious  and one who lives on the fortunes of others – these six have misery for their lot.

sumahānty api śāstrāṇi dhārayanto bahu-śrutāḥ |
chettāḥ saṃayānāṃ ca kliśyante lobha-mohitāḥ || 1.26 ||
Even those who are masters of the scriptures, well informed, and capable of removing doubts, have difficulty when their judgement is clouded by greed.

lobhāt krodhaḥ prabhavati lobhāt kāmaḥ prajāyate |
lobhān mohaś ca nāśaś ca lobhaḥ pāpasya kāraṇam || 1.27 ||
From greed originates anger; greed gives rise to lust,
from greed come attachment and ruin, greed is the cause of sin.

Thirukkural360

If the very names of these three things, desire, anger, and confusion of mind, be destroyed, then will also perish evils (which flow from them).

asaṃbhavaṃ hema-mṛgasya janma

tathāpi rāmo lulubhe mṛgāya |
prāyaḥ samāpanna-vipatti-kāle

dhiyo 'pi puṃsāṃ malinā bhavanti || 1.28 ||

Impossible is the birth of a Golden Deer, even then Rama is lured, if time is perilous, the talents of men become clouded.

na gaṇasyāgrato gacchet siddhe kārye samaṃ phalam |
yadi kārya-vipattiḥ syān mukharas tatra hanyate || 1.29 ||

One should never lead a team because everyone gets equal share on success, but the leader is held responsible in case of any failure.

āpadām āpatantīnāṃ hito 'py āyāti hetutām |
mātṛ-jaṅghā hi vatsasya stambhī-bhavati bandhane || 1.30 ||

Of calamities about to befall, even a well-wisher becomes the cause; for tying the calf it’s mother’s leg itself becomes the post.
