HITOPADESHA-4- हितोपदेशः - Good Counsels

 SUBHASHITHANI:504

ṛṇa-kartā pitā śatrur mātā ca vyabhicāriṇī |
bhāryā rūpavatī śatruḥ putraḥ śatrur apaṇḍitaḥ || 0-22 ||

A father who leaves an unpaid debt is an enemy, a characterless mother is an enemy, a beautiful wife is an enemy, and an illiterate son is an enemy.

yasya kasya prasūto 'pi guṇavān pūjyate naraḥ |
dhanur vaṃśa-viśuddho 'pi nirguṇaḥ kiṃ kariṣyati || 0-23 ||

Born of whatever parents, a man of good nature is held in high esteem; what is the use of a bow without string, even though made of faultless bamboo?

hā hā putraka nādhītaṃ gatāsv etāsu rātriṣu |
tena tvaṃ viduṣāṃ madhye paṅke gaur iva sīdasi || 0-24 ||
Alas! My son, you did not acquire knowledge in the bygone nights.
Because of that, in the company of learned people, you are like a cow with its legs stuck in clay.

āhāra-nidrā-bhaya-maithunāni
sāmānyam etat paśubhir narāṇām |
jñānaṃ narāṇām adhiko viśeṣo
jñānena hīnāḥ paśubhiḥ samānāḥ || 0-25 ||
Food, sleep, fear and sex are common needs of humans and beasts.
Discriminatory knowledge is the special attribute of humans; without Knowledge they are equal to beasts.
dharmārtha-kāma-mokṣāṇāṃ yasyaiko 'pi na vidyate |
ajāgala-stanasyeva tasya janma nirarthakam || 0-26 ||
One who has not achieved any one of the four purusharthas, Dharma, artha, kaama, and moksha, is as worthless like the neck-teat on a female goat.
āyuḥ karma ca vittaṃ ca vidyā nidhanam eva ca |
pañcaitāni hi sṛjyante garbhasthasyaiva dehinaḥ || 0-27 ||
Longevity, actions taken, money earned, education and death, these five
are determined for a person even at the time of being in the womb.

avaśyaṃ bhāvino bhāvā bhavanti mahatām api |
nagnatvaṃ nīlakaṇṭhasya mahāhi-śayanaṃ hareḥ || 0-28 ||
What is destined to happen will happen even in the case of the great.
Like the nakedness of Shiva and Vishnu having to sleep on a great snake.

yad abhāvi na tad bhāvi bhāvi cen na tad anyathā |
iti cintā-viṣa-ghno 'yam agadaḥ kiṃ na pīyate || 0-29 ||
What is not to happen will never happen and what has to be can never be otherwise. Why is it that this antidote which will vanish worry is not consumed?
