MITRALABHA-2-GAINING OF FRIENDS

 SUBHASHITHANI: 508

SOME MORE ASPECTS OF DHARMA

ijyā'dhyayana-dānāni tapaḥ satyaṃ dhṛtiḥ kṣamā |
alobha iti mārgo 'yaṃ dharmasyāṣṭa-vidhaḥ smṛtaḥ || 1.8 ||

Sacrifice, Scriptural study, generosity, austerity, truth, fortitude, patience and contentment -- this is said to be the eightfold path of righteousness.

tatra pūrvaś caturvargo dambhārtham api sevyate |
uttaras tu caturvargo mahātmany eva tiṣṭhati || 1.9 ||

Out of this, the former four may be practised even for ostentation, but the latter four is found only in the magnanimous hearted.

gatānugatiko lokaḥ kuṭṭanīm upadeśinīm |
pramāṇayati no dharme yathā goghnam api dvijam || 1.10 ||

People in general blindly follow what others do and do not regard a preaching bawd as an authority in religious matters, as they do a brahmin although he may be a cow killer.

maru-sthalyāṃ yathā vṛṣṭiḥ kṣudhārte bhojanaṃ tathā |

O Yudhishtira ! Rain in a parched land, food to a hungry man, and' charity to the needy, all these are highly fruitful actions.

prāṇā yathātmano 'bhīṣṭā bhūtānām api te tathā |
ātmaupamyena bhūtānāṃ dayāṃ kurvanti sādhavaḥ || 1.12 ||

As life is important to oneself so it is to other beings. The good show sympathy to other creatures by treating them as one’s own self.

pratyākhyāne ca dāne ca sukha-duḥkhe priyāpriye |
ātmaupamyena puruṣaḥ pramāṇam adhigacchati || 1.13 ||

“By treating others on par with oneself — in speech, giving, happiness-sorrow, and likes-dislikes — a person attains the peace of mind.”

mātṛvat para-dāreṣu para-dravyeṣu loṣṭravat |
ātmavat sarva-bhūteṣu yaḥ paśyati sa paṇḍitaḥ || 1.14 ||
Other's wives as one's own mother; other's wealth as a lump of clay; other beings like one's own self - he who sees it (this way) is a learned person.

daridrān bhara kaunteya mā prayaccheśvare dhanam |
vyādhitasyauṣadhaṃ pathyaṃ nīrujasya kim auṣadhaiḥ || 1.15 ||

oh! son of Kunti, nourish the poor and needy. Do not grant money to a prosperous one. Medicine is beneficial for the sick. What can the medicines do for the healthy?
