Importance of knowledgeable son.
स जातो येन जातेन याति वंशः समुन्नतिम् ।
परिवर्तिनि संसारे मृतः को वा न जायते ॥ १५ ॥
sa jāto
yena jātena yāti vaṃśaḥ samunnatim |
parivartini saṃsāre mṛtaḥ ko vā na jāyate || 0-15 ||
Which man
who dies is not reborn in this ever-changing world? Only he can be said to have
been born by whose birth the entire race is uplifted.
गुणि-गण-गणनाऽरम्भे न पतति कठिनी स-सम्भ्रमाद् यस्य ।
तेनाम्बा यदि सुतिनी वद बन्ध्या कीदृशी भवति ॥ १६ ॥
guṇi-gaṇa-gaṇanā'rambhe
na patati kaṭhinī sa-sambhramād yasya |
tenāmbā yadi sutinī vada bandhyā kīdṛśī bhavati || 0-16 ||
The mother of the boy who cannot
count with his fingers at the commencement of enumeration of the number of
meritorious men, people will say that she would have been better off being a
barren woman. (Importance of children’s education is being stressed)
दाने तपसि शौर्ये च यस्य न प्रथितं मनः ।
विद्यायाम् अर्थ-लाभे च मातुर् उच्चार एव सः ॥ १७ ॥
dāne
tapasi śaurye ca yasya na prathitaṃ manaḥ |
vidyāyām artha-lābhe ca mātur uccāra eva saḥ || 0-17 ||
He who is not well known
for his charity, penance, bravery. Learning and the acquisition of wealth, is
but the excrement of his mother.
वरम् एको गुणी पुत्रो न च मूर्ख-शतैर् अपि ।
एकश् चन्द्रमस् तमो हन्ति न च तारा-गणैर् अपि ॥ १८ ॥
varam
eko guṇī putro na ca mūrkha-śatair api |
ekaś candramas tamo hanti na ca tārā-gaṇair api || 0-18 ||
It is
better to have one son with all good qualities than have a hundred of them who
are stupid. Just like it is one moon that lights up the night and not the
entire constellations of stars put together.
पुण्य-तीर्थे कृतं येन तपः क्वाप्य् अतिदुष्करम् ।
तस्य पुत्रो भवेद् वश्यः समृद्धो धार्मिकः सुधीः ॥ १९ ॥
puṇya-tīrthe
kṛtaṃ yena tapaḥ kvāpy atiduṣkaram |
tasya putro bhaved vaśyaḥ samṛddho dhārmikaḥ sudhīḥ || 0-19 ||
That person who performs religious austerities, difficult to perform, at some holy place will be blessed with a son who is obedient, prosperous, righteous and intelligent.
अर्थागमो नित्यम् अरोगिता च
प्रिया च भार्या प्रिय-वादिनी च ।
वश्यश् च पुत्रो ऽर्थ-करी च विद्या
षड् जीव-लोकस्य सुखानि राजन् ॥ २० ॥
arthāgamo
nityam arogitā ca priyā ca bhāryā priya-vādinī ca |
vaśyaś ca putro 'rtha-karī ca vidyā ṣaḍ jīva-lokasya sukhāni
rājan ||
0-20 ||
O King! Being rich, keeping good health all the time, having an
affectionate wife who always speaks kindly, obedient son, being endowed with
knowledge useful in acquiring wealth – these are the six pleasures in this
world.
को धन्यो बहुभिः पुत्रैः कुशूलापूरणाढकैः ।
वरम् एकः कुलालम्बी यत्र विश्रूयते पिता ॥ २१ ॥
ko
dhanyo bahubhiḥ putraiḥ kuśūlāpūraṇāḍhakaiḥ |
varam ekaḥ kulālambī yatra viśrūyate pitā || 0-21 ||
What use
is it to have many children if they are incapable of keeping the granary full?
It is better to have a single child who spreads the family name and fame and
enhances the respect for his father.
