GANDHAM- गन्धं- SMELL-SCENT

SUBHASHITHANI:641

Even if virtuous and talented persons are residing far away, their talents act as a messenger and pronounce their existence and people throng to them just like the insects which approach Ketaki flower on being attracted by its sweet smell.

Gold does not have fragrance, fruit to sugarcane and sandalwood tree does not have flowers. Similarly, a scholar is never rich and a king
has  long life. Why no one in the past advised Brahmaji on this matter?

Although a ‘Champak’ tree may remain hidden in a forest of thorny ‘Khadir’ (Acacia) trees, yet the blowing wind makes its presence known by spreading the incomparable fragrance of its flowers in all directions.

Just as fragrance in flower, oil in sesame, fire in wood, ghee (fat) in milk and sugar in sugarcane exist latently, perceive the Supreme Soul existing so latently in the body discriminatively.

The Creator has just been graceful and kind to humanity that He created flowers on creepers and trees in jungles, fruits on trees, juices in fruits, beauty in flowers and also fragrance in flowers.

Without fragrance a flower loses its charm; Face loses its beauty without the teeth; Speech devoid of truth does not shine; Without punya man becomes vile.
A man after death cannot experience the smell of the odour from an extinguished lamp, cannot hear his friends speech, nor can see the stars in the sky. A dead man cannot smell, hear or see once life is ebbed out.

। (Pancha tanmatraas

Sabda, sparsa,Roopam, rasam and gandhaa are the five gunas of the earth say the wise men of spiritual learning.

“Sarvasya gatrasya sirah pradhanam Sarvendriyanam Nayanam Pradhanam
Shannam rasanam lavanam pradhanam Bhavet paneeyan udakam prdhanam”.
Head is important among the body. Eyes Are Important Among All Senses. Salt is important
among six tastes, water is important among liquids.

Maatru hina shishuh jeevanam vyartham kaantaa hina nava youvanam i
Tintrinee lavana hina bhojanam shanti hina tapasas phalam II
A motherless child, youth without spouse, a meal without salt and tamarind, the tapas that has no peace – these four things are a waste.

Of what use is the brackish water of a deep ocean?   The knee deep water of a river or a lake is always preferable, as it is able to quench the thirst of the people.

Salt, Curry, ghee, oil and lickable and drinkable foods should not be eaten if served with plain hands.

Human body without any limb, face without the eyes, a Nation without an effective and powerful judiciary, cooked food without any salt, human life without  righteousness and following the Religion,  are  truly not termed as embellished or resplendent, just like a dark night  without the Moon in the sky.

Sarvam vyapnoti salilam sharkara lavanam yatha I
Evam manavataa dharma dharman vyapnoti sarvatha II
Just as sugar or salt dissolves in water, in the same way, each religion should encompass ideals of other religions every possible way.

These are the items a brahmin should not sell:

He shall avoid all savoury substances as also cooked food and sesamum, stores, salt, animals and human beings.

Foods that are katu-amla-lavana-atyusna-tiksna-ruksa-vidahinah, bitter, sour, salty, very hot (-'very' is to be connected with all, viz bitter etc.; that is very bitter, very sour, and so on-), pungent, dry [Without fat.] and burning; and duhkha-soka-amaya-pradah, which produce pain, sorrow and disease; [Pain, immediate suffering; sorrow, grief arising from not having that desired food.] are rajasasyaistah, dear to one having rajas.

SUBHASHITHANI- MAHABHARATA-12

  SUBHASHITHANI:639

akinchanye na moksho'sti kinchanye nasti bandhanam |

A simple life of poverty Is not a path to salvation.
A lavish life with property Is not a path to damnation.
It’s neither wealth nor misery It’s knowledge that will set you free.

āgamānāṃ hi sarveṣām ācāraḥ śreṣṭha ucyate
ācāraprabhavo dharmo dharmādāyurvivardhate
In all scriptures, following moral code is said to be of the greatest importance. Good conduct gives rise to dharma, and dharma gives Ayush.

A king must first‌ subjugate himself and next his enemies. If he can’t subjugate himself, how can he subjugate external enemies?

Samudram tarate dobhyaam tatra kim naama paurusham II
One who has bound himself firmly with a big stone around his neck, what kind of manliness it will be if he tries to help another to cross the ocean?

The one who is becoming a slave to the senses to enjoy the subject, does not control his mind, if he starts preaching good deeds to others, then people laugh at him.

GATI- गति़ः(2)- COURSE. MOVEMENT.RESORT,

 SUBHASHITHANI:638

Ramayan 2.72.15
yā gatissarvabhūtānāṃ tāṃ gatiṃ tē pitā gataḥ ।
rājā mahātmā tējasvī yāyajūkassatāṃ gatiḥ ॥
Your father, the Mahātma, the radiant King,a great performer of Yajñas,
the resort of all good people, went where every being goes ultimately.
( This sloka was a favourite of my father SriV. K. Narasimhan, who admired the clever way Kaikeyi tells Bharatha about king's demise as though nothing unusual has happened )

Mahabharata

yena sarvamidaṃ buddhaṃ prakṛtirvikṛtiśca yā |
gatijñaḥ sarvabhūtānāṃ taṃ devā brāhmaṇaṃ viduḥ || 12.261.31 ||

One who knows the mortality of this whole world, is familiar with nature and its disorders and one who knows the motion of complete praanivargas, is called recognised by devas as a Brahma Gyani.

One should not mourn over the past and should not remain worried about the future. The wise operate in present.

Yoga vasishta
saṃtoṣaḥ paramo lābhaḥ satsaṅgaḥ paramā gatiḥ |
vicāraḥ paramaṃ jñānaṃ śamo hi paramaṃ sukham ||2.16. 19 ||
Contentment is reckoned as the best gain, good company the right course, reasoning the true knowledge, and quietism the highest bliss.
dānaṃ bhogo nāśastisro gatayo bhavanti vittasya ।
yo na dadāti na bhuṅkte tasya tṛtīyā gatirbhavati ॥
Wealth gets utilized in three ways:
Donation, consumption and destruction. Wealth of the one who neither gives his wealth for charity nor uses it for appropriate self consumption has a third destination, destruction!

Yaksha prasna

That is, logic is not stable; Shrutis also say different things; There is not a single sage whose opinion can be taken as proof; The element of religion is also mysterious on it. That's why the path on which the great man walked, the same path should be followed.

Alabhyam labhdhukaamasya janasya gatireedrushee.
Alabhyeshu manastapah samchirtaartho vinashyati.

The end result of persons who are deprived of wealth and those who desire wealth and get it , is the same. Those who do not get it suffer from mental anguish and those who have accumulated wealth ultimately lose it..
