An Old Tiger and a Greedy Traveler
काव्य-शास्त्र-विनोदेन कालो गच्छति धीमताम् ।
व्यसनेन तु मूर्खाणां निद्रया कलहेन वा ॥ १ ॥
kāvya-śāstra-vinodena
kālo gacchati dhīmatām |
vyasanena tu
mūrkhāṇāṃ nidrayā kalahena vā || 1.1 ||
Intelligent
people spend their time in the study of literatureFools
spend time in addiction, sleep or quarrel.
व्यसनेन तु मूर्खाणां निद्रया कलहेन वा ॥ १ ॥

vyasanena tu mūrkhāṇāṃ nidrayā kalahena vā || 1.1 ||
Intelligent people spend their time in the study of literature
असाधना वित्त-हीना बुद्धिमन्तः सुहृन्-मताः ।
साधयन्त्य् आशु कार्याणि काक-कूर्म-मृगाखुवत् ॥ २ ॥
asādhanā
vitta-hīnā buddhimantaḥ suhṛn-matāḥ |
sādhayanty
āśu kāryāṇi kāka-kūrma-mṛgākhuvat || 1.2 ||
Though destitute of means and
without wealth, the crow, the tortoise, the deer, and the mouse, who were best
of friends and smart accomplished their goals very easily.
शोक-स्थान-सहस्राणि भय-स्थान-शतानि च ।
दिवसे दिवसे मूढम् आविशन्ति न पण्डितम् ॥ ३ ॥
śoka-sthāna-sahasrāṇi
bhaya-sthāna-śatāni ca |
divase
divase mūḍham āviśanti na paṇḍitam || 1.3 ||
There
will thousands of things which necessitate worrying and hundreds of things
which create fear in life. But they pervade a foolish person every day and they
have no influence on a wise man.
उत्थायोत्थाय बोद्धव्यं किम् अद्य सुकृतं कृतम् ।
आयुषः खण्डम् आदाय रविर् अस्तं गमिष्यति ॥ ४ ॥
utthāyotthāya
boddhavyaṃ kim adya sukṛtaṃ kṛtam |
āyuṣaḥ
khaṇḍam ādāya ravir astaṃ gamiṣyati ||1.4 ||
Every day on rising one
should think – “what good have I done to-day”? Taking some part of life, this
sun has set.
कङ्कणस्य तु लोभेन मग्नः पङ्के सुदुस्तरे ।
वृद्ध-व्याघ्रेण सम्प्राप्तः पथिकः सम्मृतः ॥ ५ ॥
kaṅkaṇasya
tu lobhena magnaḥ paṅke sudustare |
vṛddha-vyāghreṇa
samprāptaḥ pathikaḥ sammṛtaḥ || 1.5 ||
Through the lust of a
bracelet, a traveller sank in deep mire ; caught by an old tiger lost his life.
अनिष्टाद् इष्ट-लाभेऽपि न गतिर् जायते शुभा ।
यत्रास्ते विष-संसर्गो ऽमृतं तद् अपि मृत्यवे ॥ ६ ॥
aniṣṭād
iṣṭa-lābhe'pi na gatir jāyate śubhā |
yatrāste
viṣa-saṃsargo 'mṛtaṃ tad api mṛtyave || 1.6 ||
Obtaining a desired object
through undesirable means , will not produce good or happy result. Even nectar contaminated
with poison, leads to death.
न संशयम् अनारुह्य नरो भद्राणि पश्यति ।
संशयं पुनर् आरुह्य यदि जीवति पश्यति ॥ ७ ॥
na
saṃśayam anāruhya naro bhadrāṇi paśyati |
saṃśayaṃ
punar āruhya yadi jīvati paśyati ||1.7 ||
Good fortune cannot be
obtained without embarking on an adventure; having under taken an adventure when
one survives he will see or enjoy the
benefits.
इज्याऽध्ययन-दानानि तपः सत्यं धृतिः क्षमा ।
अलोभ इति मार्गो ऽयं धर्मस्याष्ट-विधः स्मृतः ॥ ८ ॥
ijyā'dhyayana-dānāni
tapaḥ satyaṃ dhṛtiḥ kṣamā |
alobha iti
mārgo 'yaṃ dharmasyāṣṭa-vidhaḥ smṛtaḥ || 1.8 ||
To be
on the path of dharma is to implement the following eight things in life:
01. Worshipping God with puja, litany, fire
ceremonies, scriptural reading and recitations and such other things.
02. Learning Vedas and other scriptures regularly
through a guru.
03. Giving in charity to the poor whatever
articles one can.
04. Doing meditation towards a good purpose with
control over food and mind.
05. Without hurting others to always talk the
truth at all circumstances.
06. Meeting the contingencies of life by being
bold and without getting disheartened.
07. Controlling the mind by controlling what it
desires.
08. Remaining without anger towards others under
any circumstances.
