दयित-जन-विप्रयोगो वित्त-वियोगश् च सह्याः स्युः ।
यदि सुमहौषध-कल्पो वयस्य-जन-संगमो न स्यात् ॥ १८१ ॥
dayita-jana-viprayogo
vitta-viyogaś ca sahyāḥ syuḥ |
yadi sumahauṣadha-kalpo vayasya-jana-saṃgamo na syāt || 2.181 ||
How can one bear the separation of a beloved person or loss of wealth with out the association of friends which
operates like a powerful medicine?
प्राणा जन्मान्तरे भूयो न भवन्ति भवद्-विधाः ॥ १८२ ॥
prāṇā janmāntare bhūyo na bhavanti bhavad-vidhāḥ || 2.182 ||
एकस्य दुःखस्य न यावद् अन्तं
गच्छाम्य् अहं पारम् इवार्णवस्य ।
तावद् द्वितीयं समुपस्थितं मे
छिद्रेष्व् अनर्था बहुली-भवन्ति ॥ १८३ ॥
ekasya
duḥkhasya na yāvad antaṃ
gacchāmy
ahaṃ pāram ivārṇavasya |
tāvad dvitīyaṃ samupasthitaṃ me
chidreṣv anarthā bahulī-bhavanti || 2.183 ||
Tackling one problem was like reaching the
shores of an endless ocean, and now the second problem arises, it is rightly
said that when a person is already in trouble, his misfortunes keep increasing.
तावद् अस्खलितं यावत् सुखं याति समे पथि ।
स्खलिते च समुत्पन्ने विषमे च पदे पदे ॥ १८४ ॥
tāvad
askhalitaṃ yāvat sukhaṃ yāti same pathi |
skhalite ca samutpanne viṣame ca pade pade || 2.184 ||
As long as one does not slip,
so long he continues walking as though on a smooth path; once a fall has
happened, he encounters obstacles in every step.
यन् नम्रं सरलं चापि यच् चापत्सु न सीदति ।
धनुर् मित्रं कलत्रं च दुर्लभं शुद्ध-वंशजम् ॥ १८५ ॥
yan
namraṃ saralaṃ cāpi yac cāpatsu na sīdati |
dhanur mitraṃ kalatraṃ ca durlabhaṃ śuddha-vaṃśajam || 2.185 ||
It is rare indeed to find
a bow made of good bamboo and a friend and wife from a pure race; a bow which
does not give way in the hour of need, and a friend and wife, who are humble,
straight forward and do not lose courage in adversity.
न मातरि न दारेषु न सोदर्ये न चात्मजे ।
विश्रम्भस् तादृशः पुंसां यादृङ् मित्रे निरन्तरे ॥ १८६ ॥
na
mātari na dāreṣu na sodarye na cātmaje |
viśrambhas tādṛśaḥ puṃsāṃ yādṛṅ mitre nirantare || 2.186 ||
One cannot confide with his mother, his wife,
his brother or even his son as much as he can with a dear friend.
असम्पत्तौ परो लाभो गुह्यस्य कथनं तथा ।
आपद्-विमोक्षणं चैव मित्रस्यैतत् फल-त्रयम् ॥ १८७ ॥
asampattau
paro lābho guhyasya kathanaṃ tathā |
āpad-vimokṣaṇaṃ caiva mitrasyaitat phala-trayam || 2.187 ||
These three are the fruits
of friendship: provide helping hand in poverty, sharing of secrets and rescue
from adversity.

कायः संनिहितापायः सम्पदः पदम् आपदाम् ।
समागमाः सापगमाः सर्वम् उत्पादि भङ्गुरम् ॥ १८८ ॥
kāyaḥ
saṃnihitāpāyaḥ sampadaḥ padam āpadām |
samāgamāḥ sāpagamāḥ sarvam utpādi bhaṅguram || 2.188 ||
The body has problems
always at hand; prosperity is evanescent, and union is always followed by
separation- this is true of all beings.
In Ramayana we have, Rama consoling Bharata :
यथा काष्ठं च काष्ठं च समेयातां महार्णवे।
समेत्य च व्यपेयातां कालमासाद्य कञ्चन।।2.105.26।।
एवं भार्याश्चपुत्राश्च ज्ञातयश्च धनानि च।
समेत्य व्यवधावन्ति ध्रुवो ह्येषां विनाभवः।।2.105.27।।
In a mighty ocean, two
pieces of logs meet one another, float together and in due course get
separated. In the same way wives, sons, relatives and riches remain together for
some time and thereafter get separated. Their separation is certain.
