BULLS WITHOUT HORN -PTML9

 SUBHASHITHANI:398

yasya na jñāyate vīryaṃ na kulaṃ na viceṣṭitam |
na tena saṅgatiṃ kuryād ity uvāca bṛhaspatiḥ ||2.62 ||

One should not form friendship with those whose prowess, pedigree, performance of actions are unknown; Bruhaspati has said so.

amṛtasya pravāhaiḥ kiṃ kāya-kṣālana-sambhavaiḥ |
cirān mitra-pariṣvaṅgo yo 'sau mūlya-vivarjitaḥ || 2.63 ||
What is the use of streams of water flowing from body during a bath? But an embrace of a friend who has not been seen for long is invaluable.

parjanyasya yathā dhārā yathā ca divi tārakāḥ |
sikatā-reṇavo yadvat saṅkhyayā parivarjitā || 2.64 ||

Just as streams of rain water, or stars in the sky, or the grains of sand in the beach- his virtues are innumerable.

guṇāḥ saṅkhyā-parityaktās tadvad asya mahātmanaḥ |
paraṃ nirvedam āpannaḥ samprāpto 'yaṃ tavāntikam || 2.65 ||

So are the merits of this magnanimous one, beyond evaluation; but being upset with the world he has come to you for solace.

ehy āgaccha samāviśāsanam idaṃ kasmāc cirād dṛśyase

kā vārteti sudurbalo 'si kuśalaṃ prīto 'smi te darśanāt |
evaṃ ye samupāgatān praṇayinaḥ pratyālapanty ādarāt

 teṣāṃ yuktam aśaṅkitena manasā harmyāṇi gantuṃ sadā || 2.66 ||

You are welcome; please come in; kindly have this seat; How is it long time since we met each other? What is the matter? You are looking weak, are you all right? It is a pleasure to see you. It is only proper to go with a mind free from worries to the houses of those who receive with open arms friends who come to their house.

gṛhī yatrāgataṃ dṛṣṭvā diśo vīkṣeta vāpy adhaḥ |
tatra ye sadane yānti te śṛṅga-rahitā vṛṣāḥ || 2.67 ||

Those who visit the houses of those who show indifference( lit.looking in different directions) on seeing the arrival of a guest, are like "bulls without horn".

sābhyutthāna-kriyā yatra nālāpā madhurākṣarāḥ |
guṇa-doṣa-kathā naiva tatra harmyaṃ na gamyate || 2.68 ||

One should avoid visit to a house where no one gets up to greet you with respect; where pleasant words are not spoken; where no one wants to converse.

narakāya matis te cet paurohityaṃ samācāra |
varṣaṃ yāvat kim anyena maṭha-cintāṃ dina-trayam || 2.69 ||

If you desire to go to hell, accept the duties of a family priest for one year; or manage the affairs of a convent for three days. (Idea here is that practicing priest-hood for just earning money is a sure path to hell)
