NATURE OF A TRUE FRIEND -15-PTML15

 SUBHASHITHANI:405

gavārthe brāhmaṇārthe ca strī-vitta-haraṇe tathā |
prāṇāṃs tyajati yo yuddhe tasya lokāḥ sanātanāḥ || 2.110 ||

He who sacrifices his life for the sake of a cow, a vedic scholar, for saving his wife or wealth being taken away and in a battle field attains the world of eternal-bliss.

prāptavyam arthaṃ labhate manuṣyo

devo 'pi taṃ laṅghayituṃ na śaktaḥ |
tasmān na śocāmi na vismayo me

yad asmadīyaṃ na hi tat pareṣām || 2.111 ||

Whatever an individual is supposed to get (by his good fortune), even God cannot deny him. Hence, I am neither sad nor elated. What belongs to us can never be someone else’s.

guroḥ sutāṃ mitra-bhāryāṃ svāmi-sevaka-gehinīm |
yo gacchati pumāṃl loke tam āhur brahma-ghātinam || 2.112 ||

One is said to have committed greatest sin if one indulges in illicit relationship with guru’s daughter, friend’s wife and  wife of the master or servant.

ayaśaḥ prāpyate yena yena cādho-gatir bhavet |
svārthāc ca bhraśyate yena tat karma na samācaret || 2.113 ||

One should not act in such a way that brings infamy, or will be condemned to hell, or pushed  down from heaven.

vikāraṃ yāti no cittaṃ vitte yasya kadācana |
mitraṃ syāt sarva-kāle ca kārayen mitram uttamam || 2.114 ||
One should make such a friend, a most desirable,  who is not affected by the prosperity of his friend and who ever remains a true friend.

vidvadbhiḥ suhṛdām atra cihnair etair asaṃśayam |
parīkṣā-karaṇaṃ proktaṃ homāgner iva paṇḍitaiḥ || 2.115 ||

To clear all doubts about the sincerity of a friend, the wise men declare that testing of friends should be made with these signs, as that of sacrificial fire is enjoined by wise sages.

āpat-kāle tu samprāpte yan mitraṃ mitram eva tat |
vṛddhi-kāle tu samprāpte durjano 'pi suhṛd bhavet || 2.116 ||

He who stands by you in times of trouble, and does not change his behaviour towards you in troubled times, is a true friend. When you are prosperous, even the wicked will stand by you.

dṛśyate mitra-vidhvastāt kāryād vairī parīkṣitaḥ || 2.117 ||

No one is a friend and no one is an enemy forever. It is one’s behaviour and actions that are the true test of friendship or enmity.
