 chidreṣv anarthā bahulī-bhavanti || 11.193 ||

Hardly have I gone to the end of one problem, as of the ocean, when a second one has befallen on me. It is said wen one is in distress his misfortune increases.

svabhāvajaṃ tu yan mitraṃ bhāgyenaivābhijāyate |
tad-akṛtrima-sauhārdam āpatsv api na muñcati || 1.194 ||

kālāntarāvarti-śubhāśubhāni |
ihaiva dṛṣṭāni mayaiva tāni

 janmāntarāṇīva daśāntarāṇi || 1.196 ||

Results happening by my own actions, whether good or bad, and happening at various times have been experienced by me in this very life ,like so many births and rebirths.

kāyaḥ saṃnihitāpāyaḥ sampadaḥ padam āpadām |
samāgamāḥ sāpagamāḥ sarvam utpādi bhaṅguram || 1.197 ||

Body is always associated with danger, wealth is impermanent. The happiness due to union is accompanied by the pain of separation. This is true of all beings.

mitraṃ prīti-rasāyanaṃ nayanayor ānandanaṃ cetasaḥ

 pātraṃ yat sukha-duḥkhayoḥ samam idaṃ puṇyātmanā labhyate |
ye cānye suhṛdaḥ samṛddhi-samaye dravyābhilāṣākulās te

 sarvatra milanti tattva-nikaṣa-grāvā tu teṣāṃ vipat || 1.199 ||

A friend, whose association with you increases your affection towards him, his presence is pleasing to your eyes and mind, and who shares your good and bad situations equally, is very rare to get. On the other hand, your friends, who during the period of your affluence are always eager to share your wealth, are found everywhere, but the real test of their friendship is at a time when you are in trouble.

One who abandons some one who sought his protection due to greed or fear incurs a sin equivalent to committing ‘brahmahatyaa’; so say the wise men.

aurasaṃ kṛta-sambandhaṃ tathā vaṃśa-kramāgatam |
rakṣakaṃ vyasanebhyaś ca mitraṃ jñeyaṃ catur-vidham || 1.185 ||
Know friends to be of four kinds: like one who has suckled from the same breast, one born out of a relation, a hereditary friend, and one who protects from vices.

niyata-viṣaya-vartī prāyaśo daṇḍa-yogāj

 jagati para-vaśe'smin durlabhaḥ sādhu-vṛtteḥ |
kṛśam api vikalaṃ vā vyādhitaṃ vādhanaṃ vā

patim api kula-nārī daṇḍa-bhītyābhyupaiti || 1.191 ||

In this world of inter-dependence people respect rules only due to the fear of punishment; In this world it is rare to find people who are of voluntary good conduct. Even a woman from good family respects a lean. deformed, sickly and poor husband only due to fear of punishment.
