SUBHASHITHANI:536
यदि सत्संग निरतो भविष्यसि भविष्यसि I
तथा असज्जन गोष्टीषु पतिष्यसि पतिष्यसि II
yadIsat-saṅga-nirato
bhaviṣyasi bhaviṣyasi |
Thata asajjana-goṣṭhīṣu patiṣyasi patiṣyasi || 1.192 ||
When you are in the
company of the good you will prosper and prosper; once you are in the company
of the wicked men you will fall again and again.
गच्छाम्य् अहं पारम् इवार्णवस्य ।
तावद् द्वितीयं समुपस्थितं मे
छिद्रेष्व् अनर्था बहुली-भवन्ति ॥ १९३ ॥
ekasya
duḥkhasya na yāvad antaṃ
gacchāmy
ahaṃ pāram ivārṇavasya |
tāvad dvitīyaṃ samupasthitaṃ me
chidreṣv anarthā bahulī-bhavanti || 11.193 ||
Hardly have I gone to the
end of one problem, as of the ocean, when a second one has befallen on me. It
is said wen one is in distress his misfortune increases.
स्वभावजं तु यन् मित्रं भाग्येनैवाभिजायते ।
तद्-अकृत्रिम-सौहार्दम् आपत्स्व् अपि न मुञ्चति ॥ १९४ ॥
svabhāvajaṃ
tu yan mitraṃ bhāgyenaivābhijāyate |
tad-akṛtrima-sauhārdam āpatsv api na muñcati || 1.194 ||
By some good fortune a
natural friendship developed and whose affection is sincere does not abandons
one even in adversity.
न मातरि न दारेषु न सोदर्ये न चात्मजे ।
विश्वासस् तादृशः पुंसां यादृङ् मित्रे स्वभावजे ॥ १९५ ॥
na mātari na dāreṣu na
sodarye na cātmaje |
viśvāsas tādṛśaḥ puṃsāṃ yādṛṅ
mitre svabhāvaje || 1.195 ||
One does not trust his mother, his wife, his brother or even his son as
much as he trusts a dear friend.
स्व-कर्म-सन्तान-विचेष्टितानि
कालान्तरावर्ति-शुभाशुभानि ।
इहैव दृष्टानि मयैव तानि
जन्मान्तराणीव दशान्तराणि ॥ १९६ ॥
sva-karma-santāna-viceṣṭitāni
kālāntarāvarti-śubhāśubhāni |
ihaiva dṛṣṭāni mayaiva tāni
janmāntarāṇīva daśāntarāṇi || 1.196 ||
Results happening by my
own actions, whether good or bad, and happening at various times have been
experienced by me in this very life ,like so many births and rebirths.
कायः संनिहितापायः सम्पदः पदम् आपदाम् ।
समागमाः सापगमाः सर्वम् उत्पादि भङ्गुरम् ॥ १९७ ॥
kāyaḥ saṃnihitāpāyaḥ
sampadaḥ padam āpadām |
samāgamāḥ sāpagamāḥ sarvam
utpādi bhaṅguram || 1.197 ||
Body is always associated
with danger, wealth is impermanent. The happiness due to union is accompanied
by the pain of separation. This is true of all beings.
शोकाराति-भय-त्राणं प्रीति-विश्रम्भ-भाजनम् ।
केन रत्नम् इदं सृष्टं मित्रम् इत्य् अक्षर-द्वयम् ॥ १९८ ॥
śokārāti-bhaya-trāṇaṃ
prīti-viśrambha-bhājanam |
kena ratnam idaṃ sṛṣṭaṃ mitram
ity akṣara-dvayam || 1.198 ||
By whom
is this two lettered gem called ‘Mitra’(मित्र ) created? Helping at the time of adversity, protecting from any sort of
fear, and sharing happiness and trust.
मित्रं प्रीति-रसायनं नयनयोर् आनन्दनं चेतसः
पात्रं यत् सुख-दुःखयोः समम् इदं पुण्यात्मना लभ्यते ।
ये चान्ये सुहृदः समृद्धि-समये द्रव्याभिलाषाकुलास् ते
सर्वत्र मिलन्ति तत्त्व-निकष-ग्रावा तु तेषां विपत् ॥ १९९ ॥
mitraṃ prīti-rasāyanaṃ
nayanayor ānandanaṃ cetasaḥ
pātraṃ yat sukha-duḥkhayoḥ samam idaṃ
puṇyātmanā labhyate |
ye cānye
suhṛdaḥ samṛddhi-samaye dravyābhilāṣākulās te
sarvatra milanti tattva-nikaṣa-grāvā tu teṣāṃ
vipat ||
1.199 ||
A friend, whose association with you
increases your affection towards him, his presence is pleasing to your eyes and
mind, and who shares your good and bad situations equally, is very rare to get.
On the other hand, your friends, who during the period of your affluence are
always eager to share your wealth, are found everywhere, but the real test of
their friendship is at a time when you are in trouble.
