Suhridbheda, or the Breach of Friendship




















Hitopadesa ( हितोपदेश) is a collection of Sanskrit fables in prose and verse written in the 12 century C.E. The Hitopadesa is organized into four books or chapters, with a preface section called Prastavika and a concluding part. The four books or chapters are 1.Mitra laabha, 2. Suhrid bheda, 3. Vigraha and 4.Sandhi.

Starting from this blog we will see the wonderful slokas with its meaning from the second chapter "Suhrid bheda- Separation of friends".


वर्धमानो महान् स्नेहो मृगेन्द्र-वृषभोर् वने
पिशुनेनातिलुब्धेन जम्बुकेन विनाशितः

vardhamāno mahān sneho mṛgendra-vṛṣhabhor vane |
piśunenātilubdhena jambukena vināśitaḥ || 2.1 ||

A strong friendship was developing between a lion and a bull in a forest, and it was destroyed by a malicious and greedy jackal.

अधो ऽधः पश्यतः कस्य महिमा नोपचीयते
उपर्य् उपरि पश्यन्तः सर्व एव दरिद्रति

adho 'dhaḥ paśyataḥ kasya mahimā nopacīyate |
upary upari paśyantaḥ sarva eva daridrati || 2.2 ||

One can feel comfortable if he has the nature of always seeing those who are less privileged than himself ; on the other hand one will always feel miserable if he is in the habit of comparing himself with those who are better placed in life.

ब्रह्महापि नरः पूज्यो यस्यास्ति विपुलं धनम्
शशिनस् तुल्य-वंशो ऽपि निर्धनः परिभूयते

brahmahāpi naraḥ pūjyo yasyāsti vipulaṃ dhanam |
śaśinas tulya-vaṃśo 'pi nirdhanaḥ paribhūyate || 2.3 ||

One who is rich is respected even if he has committed ‘brahmahatya’; while a man may be descendant of the’ moon race’ but is despised if he is poor.

अव्यवसायिनम् अलसं दैव-परं सहसाच् परिहीणम्
प्रमदेव हि वृद्ध-पतिं नेच्छत्य् अवगूहितुं लक्ष्मीः

avyavasāyinam alasaṃ daiva-paraṃ sahasāc ca parihīṇam |
pramadeva hi vṛddha-patiṃ necchaty avagūhituṃ lakṣmīḥ ||2.4 ||

Goddess of wealth, Lakshmi, does not like those who are not industrious, lazy, who believes in fate, and lacks enthusiasm, as a young woman dislikes an old husband.

आलस्यं स्त्री-सेवा -रोगता जन्म-भूमि-वात्सल्यम्
सन्तोषो भीरुत्वं षड् व्याघाता महत्त्वस्य

ālasyaṃ strī-sevā sa-rogatā janma-bhūmi-vātsalyam |
santoṣo bhīrutvaṃ ṣaḍ vyāghātā mahattvasya || 2.5 ||

Laziness, being at the beck and call of women, sickness, too much attachment with one's place of birth, contentedness with one's lot, and cowardice. these are the six impediments in the progress of a person in his life.
