Ya paraadheenataam yaataaste vai jeevanti ke mrutaah II2.22

It is only those who lead a life of independence can claim to a life of fulfilment; if those who are dependent on others claim to be living, then who are the dead?

ehi gaccha patottiṣṭha vada maunaṃ samācara |
evamaashaagra grastaih kreedanti dhaninorthibhih II2.23

The rich play with those who are after wealth by asking them – come, go away, fall down, rise, speak, be silent.

Fools for the sake of money, like harlots, deck themselves again and again and make themselves subservient to others.

yā prakṛtyaiva capalā nipataty aśucāv api |

Servants admire greatly the glance of their masters which is naturally unsteady and even falls on wicked men.

dhṛṣṭaḥ pārśve vasati niyataṃ dūrataś cāpragalbhaḥ

sevā-dharmaḥ parama-gahano yoginām apy agamyaḥ || 2.26 ||

If a person in service remains quiet, then he is dumb. If he is quick-witted then he is called loquacious. If he is tolerant, he is considered timid, If he is unable to tolerate insults he is called ill-bred, If stays nearby, then he is taken to be audacious, and if he keeps some distance then he is taken as shy. The path of service is abstruse and difficult even for a yogi to follow.

duḥkhīyati sukha-hetoḥ ko mūḍhaḥ sevakād anyaḥ || 2.27 ||

He falls down to rise, sacrifices life to live, goes through miseries to be happy; can there be a greater fool than a servant?

kathaṃ nāma na sevyante yatnataḥ parameśvarāḥ |
acireṇaiva ye tuṣṭāḥ pūrayanti manorathān || 2.28 ||

Why should one not serve great kings? When they are pleased, they bestow their benevolence to their servants without delay.

kutaḥ sevā-vihīnānāṃ cāmaroddhūta-sampadaḥ |
uddaṇḍa-dhavala-cchatraṃ vāji-vāraṇa-vāhinī || 2.29 ||

How can those who are out-of-service, have riches with chamaras waved over them, a white umbrella with a prominent staff, with many servants, horses and elephants?
