MITRALABHA-25-GAINING OF FRIENDS

 SUBHASHTHANI:535

lobhād vātha bhayād vāpi yas tyajec charaṇāgatam |
brahma-hatyā-samaṃ tasya pāpam āhur manīṣiṇaḥ || 1.184 ||
One who abandons some one who sought his protection due to greed or fear incurs a sin equivalent to committing ‘brahmahatyaa’; so say the wise men.

aurasaṃ kṛta-sambandhaṃ tathā vaṃśa-kramāgatam |
rakṣakaṃ vyasanebhyaś ca mitraṃ jñeyaṃ catur-vidham || 1.185 ||
Know friends to be of four kinds: like one who has suckled from the same breast, one born out of a relation, a hereditary friend, and one who protects from vices.

ambhāṃsi jala-jantūnāṃ durgaṃ durga-nivāsinām |
sva-bhūmiḥ śvāpadādīnāṃ rājñāṃ sainyaṃ paraṃ balam || 1.186 ||

Aquatic animals are strong in water, fortress for those who are habituated to fortresses, their own ground for various animals and a good army for a king.

upāyena hi yac chakyaṃ na tac chakyaṃ parākramaiḥ |
kākī kanaka-sūtreṇa kṛṣṇa-sarpam aghātayat || 1.187 ||

What is possible through some stratagem cannot be done with valour. (As told in the story that follows) the crow destroyed the serpent using a golden chain!

kulācāra-janācārair atiśuddhaḥ pratāpavān |
dhārmiko nīti-kuśalaḥ sa svāmī yujyate bhuvi || 1.188 ||

One who is pure in family traditions, chivalrous, pious, and expert in politics is fit to be a king in this world.

rājānaṃ prathamaṃ vindet tato bhāryāṃ tato dhanam |
rājany asati loke'smin kuto bhāryā kuto dhanam || 1.189 ||

A king must first be obtained, then only a wife and wealth. If there is no king how can there be wife or wealth?

parjanya iva bhūtānām ādhāraḥ pṛthivī-patiḥ |
vikale'pi hi parjanye jīvyate na tu bhūpatau || 1.190 ||

The king is the supporter of the creatures like rain; Creatures may survive even with scarcity of water but not subjects without a king.

niyata-viṣaya-vartī prāyaśo daṇḍa-yogāj

 jagati para-vaśe'smin durlabhaḥ sādhu-vṛtteḥ |
kṛśam api vikalaṃ vā vyādhitaṃ vādhanaṃ vā

patim api kula-nārī daṇḍa-bhītyābhyupaiti || 1.191 ||

In this world of inter-dependence people respect rules only due to the fear of punishment; In this world it is rare to find people who are of voluntary good conduct. Even a woman from good family respects a lean. deformed, sickly and poor husband only due to fear of punishment.
