janmani kleśa-bahule kiṃ nu duḥkham ataḥ param |
icchā-sampad yato nāsti yac cecchā na nivartate || 1.177 ||
In life filled with
troubles all the time what pain is greater than this, wealth is not obtained as
desired and still desire never turns back.
dhanaṃ tāvad asulabhaṃ labdhaṃ kṛcchreṇa pālyate |
labdha-nāśo yathā mṛtyus tasmād etan na cintayet || 1.178 ||
Acquiring wealth in
the first place involves great difficulty, it is difficult to protect, loss of
wealth is like death itself, one should therefore desist from thinking about
it.
Once desire is
abandoned, who is poor who is rich? Once you allow desire to sprout servitude
will be the consequence.
yad yad eva hi vāñcheta tato vāñchā pravartate |
prāpta evārthataḥ so 'rtho yato vāñchā nivartate || 1.180 ||
Desire proceeds
from whatever one wishes for; but real fulfilment of wishes will take place
when one can turn away from desire.
āmaraṇāntāḥ praṇayāḥ kopāś ca kṣaṇa-bhaṅgurāḥ |
parityāgāś ca niḥsaṅgā bhavanti mahātmanām || 1.181 ||
The friendship of
great men last till death where as their anger hardly lasts a few
moments, their offerings are without any expectation.
santa eva satāṃ nityam āpad-uddharaṇa-kṣamāḥ |
gajānāṃ paṅka-magnānāṃ gajā eva dhurandharāḥ || 1.182 ||
Only Good men are
capable of saving other good men in times of calamities. Mired elephants can be
rescued only by another elephant.
ślāghyaḥ sa eko bhuvi mānavānāṃ
sa uttamaḥ sat-puruṣaḥ sa dhanyaḥ |
yasyārthino vā śaraṇāgatā vā
nāśāvibhaṅgā vimukhāḥ prayānti || 1.183 ||
He only is praise
worthy in this world, he is the best, he is saintly, he is blessed, from whom
no person seeking some thing or protection does not return disappointed.
