MITRALABHA-24-GAINING OF FRIENDS

 SUBHASHITHANI:534

जन्मनि क्लेश-बहुले किं नु दुःखम् अतः परम् 
इच्छा-सम्पद् यतो नास्ति यच् चेच्छा  निवर्तते  १७७ 
janmani kleśa-bahule kiṃ nu duḥkham ataḥ param |
icchā-sampad yato nāsti yac cecchā na nivartate || 1.177 ||
In life filled with troubles all the time what pain is greater than this, wealth is not obtained as desired and still desire never turns back.

धनं तावद् असुलभं लब्धं कृच्छ्रेण पाल्यते 
लब्ध-नाशो यथा मृत्युस् तस्माद् एतन्  चिन्तयेत्  १७८ 
dhanaṃ tāvad asulabhaṃ labdhaṃ kṛcchreṇa pālyate |
labdha-nāśo yathā mṛtyus tasmād etan na cintayet || 1.178 ||
Acquiring wealth in the first place involves great difficulty, it is difficult to protect, loss of wealth is like death itself, one should therefore desist from thinking about it.

सा तृष्णा चेत् परित्यक्ता को दरिद्रः  ईश्वरः 
तस्याश् चेत् प्रसरो दत्तो दास्यं  शिरसि स्थितम्  १७९ 
sā tṛṣṇā cet parityaktā ko daridraḥ ka īśvaraḥ |
tasyāś cet prasaro datto dāsyaṃ ca śirasi sthitam || 1.179 ||
Once desire is abandoned, who is poor who is rich? Once you allow desire to sprout servitude will be the consequence.

यद् यद् एव हि वाञ्छेत ततो वाञ्छा प्रवर्तते 
प्राप्त एवार्थतः सो ऽर्थो यतो वाञ्छा निवर्तते  १८० 
yad yad eva hi vāñcheta tato vāñchā pravartate |
prāpta evārthataḥ so 'rtho yato vāñchā nivartate || 1.180 ||
Desire proceeds from whatever one wishes for; but real fulfilment of wishes will take place when one can turn away from desire.

आमरणान्ताः प्रणयाः कोपाश्  क्षण-भङ्गुराः 

परित्यागाश्  निःसङ्गा  भवन्ति महात्मनाम्  १८१ 
āmaraṇāntāḥ praṇayāḥ kopāś ca kṣaṇa-bhaṅgurāḥ |
parityāgāś ca niḥsaṅgā  bhavanti mahātmanām || 1.181 ||
The friendship of great men last till death where  as their anger hardly lasts a few moments, their offerings are without any expectation.

सन्त एव सतां नित्यम् आपद्-उद्धरण-क्षमाः 
गजानां पङ्क-मग्नानां गजा एव धुरन्धराः  १८२ 
santa eva satāṃ nityam āpad-uddharaṇa-kṣamāḥ |
gajānāṃ paṅka-magnānāṃ gajā eva dhurandharāḥ || 1.182 ||
Only Good men are capable of saving other good men in times of calamities. Mired elephants can be rescued only by another elephant.

श्लाघ्यः  एको भुवि मानवानां
 उत्तमः सत्-पुरुषः  धन्यः 
यस्यार्थिनो वा शरणागता वा
नाशाविभङ्गा विमुखाः प्रयान्ति  १८३ 
ślāghyaḥ sa eko bhuvi mānavānāṃ
sa uttamaḥ sat-puruṣaḥ sa dhanyaḥ |
yasyārthino vā śaraṇāgatā vā
nāśāvibhaṅgā vimukhāḥ prayānti || 1.183 ||
He only is praise worthy in this world, he is the best, he is saintly, he is blessed, from whom no person seeking some thing or protection does not return disappointed.
