विनाप्य् अर्थैर् धीरः स्पृशति बहुमानोन्नति-पदं
समायुक्तो ऽप्य् अर्थैः परिभव-पदं याति कृपणः ।
स्वभावाद् उद्भूतां गुण-समुदयावाप्ति-विषयां
द्युतिं सैंहीं श्वा किं धृत-कनक-मालो ऽपि लभते ॥ १६९ ॥
vināpy arthair dhīraḥ spṛśati bahumānonnati-padaṃ
samāyukto 'py arthaiḥ paribhava-padaṃ yāti kṛpaṇaḥ |
svabhāvād udbhūtāṃ guṇa-samudayāvāpti-viṣayāṃ
dyutiṃ saiṃhīṃ śvā kiṃ dhṛta-kanaka-mālo 'pi labhate || 1.169 ||
A valiant man, even
though without wealth, attains to a high position attended with honour, while a
miser, although possessing wealth, becomes an object of contempt. Can a dog,
although wearing necklaces of gold, possess the majesty of the lion which is manifested
naturally and which is the seat (cause) of the attainment of a number of good
qualities?
धनवान् इति हि मदस् ते किं गत-विभवो विषादम् उपयासि ।
कर-निहत-कन्दुक-समाः पातोत्पाता मनुष्याणाम् ॥ १७० ॥
dhanavān iti hi madas te kiṃ gata-vibhavo viṣādam upayāsi |
kara-nihata-kanduka-samāḥ pātotpātā manuṣyāṇām || 1.170 ||
Never feel proud
that you are rich, when you lose wealth it will bring immense sorrow. Like a
ball falling from the hand goes down and bounces back, men experience ups and
downs in life.
वृत्त्य्-अर्थं नातिचेष्टते सा हि धात्रैव निर्मिता ।
गर्भाद् उत्पतिते जन्तौ मातुः प्रस्रवतः स्तनौ ॥ १७१ ॥
vṛtty-arthaṃ nāticeṣṭate sā hi dhātraiva nirmitā |
garbhād utpatite jantau mātuḥ prasravataḥ stanau || 1.171 ||
One should not
exert too much for lively hood, the creator takes care of every one; the moment
a creature is born the mother’s breast overflow with milk.
येन शुक्ली-कृता हंसाः शुकाश् च हरितीकृताः ।
मयूराश् चित्रिता येन स ते वृत्तिं विधास्यति ॥ १७२ ॥
yena śuklī-kṛtā haṃsāḥ śukāś ca haritīkṛtāḥ |
mayūrāś citritā yena sa te vṛttiṃ vidhāsyati || 1.172 ||
One, who made the swans
white; parrots green and the peacocks spotted, will provide for your
living.
जनयन्त्य् अर्जने दुःखं तापयन्ति विपत्तिषु ।
मोहयन्ति च सम्पत्तौ कथम् अर्थाः सुखावहाः ॥ १७३ ॥
janayanty arjane duḥkhaṃ tāpayanti vipattiṣu |
mohayanti ca sampattau katham arthāḥ sukhāvahāḥ || 1.173 ||
Wealth causes pain
while acquisition, burns when in adversity, stupefies the mind when in
prosperity- How can wealth be the cause for happiness?
धर्मार्थं यस्य वित्तेहा वरं तस्य निरीहता ।
प्रक्षालनाद् धि पङ्कस्य दूराद् अस्पर्शनं वरम् ॥ १७४ ॥
dharmārthaṃ yasya vittehā varaṃ tasya nirīhatā |
prakṣālanād dhi paṅkasya dūrād asparśanaṃ varam || 1.174 ||
If one wants wealth
only so that he can spend it on Dharma (charity and other noble deeds), then it
is better to give up the longing. It is better keeping your feet clean by
staying away from mud than clean it after getting dirty.
यथाआमिषम् आकाशे पक्षिभिः श्वापदैर् भुवि ।
भक्ष्यते सलिले मत्स्यैस् तथा सर्वत्र वित्तवान् ॥ १७५ ॥
yathāāmiṣam ākāśe pakṣibhiḥ śvāpadair bhuvi |
bhakṣyate salile matsyais tathā sarvatra vittavān || 1.175 ||
A piece of meat is
sought after by birds in the sky, by dogs on land, and eaten by fish in the
water. So is a wealthy man swallowed up in many ways, where ever he goes.
राजतः सलिलाद् अग्नेश् चोरतः स्वजनाद् अपि ।
भयम् अर्थवतां नित्यं मृत्योः प्राण-भृताम् इव ॥ १७६ ॥
rājataḥ salilād agneś corataḥ svajanād api |
bhayam arthavatāṃ nityaṃ mṛtyoḥ prāṇa-bhṛtām iva || 1.176 ||
A wealthy man is
always filled with fear from king, from water, fire, a thief, and
even from relatives, as there is from death to the living.
