GREED Vs CONTENTMENT

सेवेव मानम् अखिलं ज्योत्स्नेव तमो जरेव लावण्यम्
हरि-हर-कथेव दुरितं गुण-शतम् अप्य् अर्थिता हरति १३२

seveva mānam akhilaṃ jyotsneva tamo jareva lāvaṇyam |
hari-hara-katheva duritaṃ guṇa-śatam apy arthitā harati || 1.132 ||

Serving under someone destroys self-respect, moon light darkness, old age beauty and grace, reciting the name of Hari and Hara sin, so does beggary destroys even a hundred good qualities.

रोगी चिर-प्रवासी परान्न-भोजी परावसथ-शायी
यज् जीवति तन् मरणं यन् मरणं सो ऽस्य विश्रामः १३३

rogī cira-pravāsī parānna-bhojī parāvasatha-śāyī |
yaj jīvati tan maraṇaṃ yan maraṇaṃ so 'sya viśrāmaḥ || 1.133 ||

A sick man, one in long exile, one eating another’s food, sleeping in someone else’s house- such a living is as good as death; while the actual death to him is rest.

लोभेन बुद्धिश् चलति लोभो जनयते तृषाम्
तृषार्तो दुःखम् आप्नोति परत्रेह मानवः १३४

lobhena buddhiś calati lobho janayate tṛṣām |
tṛṣārto duḥkham āpnoti paratreha ca mānavaḥ || 1.134 ||

Greed spoils the intellect, from greed deep desire is born, desire leads men in this and other world to sorrow.

धन-लुब्धो ह्य् असन्तुष्टो ऽनियतात्माजितेन्द्रियः
सर्वा एवापदस् तस्य यस्य तुष्टं मानसम् १३५

dhana-lubdho hy asantuṣṭo 'niyatātmājitendriyaḥ |
sarvā evāpadas tasya yasya tuṣṭaṃ na mānasam || 1.135 ||

He who hankers for wealth is ever unhappy, knows no restraint and has no control over his senses. It is calamities every where for one who knows no contentment.

सर्वाः सम्पत्तस्यस् तस्य सन्तुष्टं यस्य मानसम्
उपानद्-गूढ-पादस्य ननु चर्मावृतेव भूः १३६

sarvāḥ sampattasyas tasya santuṣṭaṃ yasya mānasam |
upānad-gūḍha-pādasya nanu carmāvṛteva bhūḥ || 1.136 ||

One who is contented in his heart, has all the wealth.  For a person whose feet are protected by the footwear, entire world is, as if, it is covered with the skin/hide.

सन्तोषामृत-तृप्तानां यत् सुखं शान्त-चेतसाम्
कुतस् तद्-धन-लुब्धानाम् इतश् चेतश् धावताम् १३७

santoṣāmṛta-tṛptānāṃ yat sukhaṃ śānta-cetasām |
kutas tad-dhana-lubdhānām itaś cetaś ca dhāvatām || 1.137 ||

The peace and calm that contentment brings cannot be experienced by men who are greedy of wealth and running here and tither in search of it.

तेनाधीतं श्रुतं तेन तेन सर्वम् अनुष्ठितम्
येनाशाः पृष्ठतः कृत्वा नैराश्यम् अवलम्बितम् १३८

tenādhītaṃ śrutaṃ tena tena sarvam anuṣṭhitam |
yenāśāḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ kṛtvā nairāśyam avalambitam || 1.138 ||

He Indeed Is Well Read In The Scriptures, A Good Student, A Practitioner Of All That He Had Learned, Who Manages To Quell His Desires And Turn to contentment.

असेवितेश्वर-द्वारम् अदृष्ट-विरह-व्यथम्
अनुक्त-क्लीब-वचनं धन्यं कस्यापि जीवनम् १३९

aseviteśvara-dvāram adṛṣṭa-viraha-vyatham |
anukta-klība-vacanaṃ dhanyaṃ kasyāpi jīvanam || 1.139 ||

One who never knocks at the door of the rich, one who has not experienced the pain of separation, one who never utters piteous words, blessed is the life of such a rare one.
