न योजन-शतं दूरं वाह्यमानस्य तृष्णया ।
सन्तुष्टस्य कर-प्राप्तेऽप्य् अर्थे भवति नादरः ॥ १४० ॥
na
yojana-śataṃ dūraṃ vāhyamānasya tṛṣṇayā |
santuṣṭasya
kara-prāpte'py arthe bhavati nādaraḥ || 1.140 ||
A person
intent on the accumulation of wealth will travel thousands of kilometres
because he is powered by greed. But the person who is content with whatever he
has, does not care even for the money fallen in his hand.
को धर्मो भूत-दया किं सौख्यं नित्यम् अरोगिना जगति ।
कः स्नेहः सद्-भावः किं पाण्डित्यं परिच्छेदः ॥ १४१ ॥
ko
dharmo bhūta-dayā kiṃ saukhyaṃ nityam aroginā jagati |
kaḥ snehaḥ sad-bhāvaḥ kiṃ pāṇḍityaṃ paricchedaḥ || 1.141 ||
What is
dharma? Having compassion towards all beings.
What is happiness? Being healthy is happiness.
What is friendship? Feeling of good-will towards everyone.
What is erudition? knowledge to differentiate between good and bad.
परिच्छेदो हि पाण्डित्यं यदापन्ना विपत्तयः ।
अपरिच्छेद-कर्तॄणां विपदः स्युः पदे पदे ॥ १४२ ॥
paricchedo
hi pāṇḍityaṃ yadāpannā vipattayaḥ |
apariccheda-kartṝṇāṃ vipadaḥ syuḥ pade pade || 1.142 ||
One who analyses before acting
when faced with some difficulties is considered as a wise man. Those who act
without thinking will face difficulties at every step.
त्यजेद् एकं कुलस्यार्थे ग्रामस्यार्थे कुलं त्यजेत् ।
ग्रामं जनपदस्यार्थे आत्मार्थे पृथिवीं त्यजेत् ॥ १४३ ॥
tyajed
ekaṃ kulasyārthe grāmasyārthe kulaṃ tyajet |
grāmaṃ janapadasyārthe ātmārthe pṛthivīṃ tyajet || 1.143 ||
One should renounce a person for the sake of the whole family; one
should renounce a family for the sake of the village;
one should renounce a village for the sake of the country; and
one should renounce the earth for the sake of one’s own Self.
पानीयं वा निरायासं स्वाद्वन्नं वा भयोत्तरम् ।
विचार्यं खलु पश्यामि तत् सुखं यत्र निर्वृतिः ॥ १४४ ॥
pānīyaṃ
vā nirāyāsaṃ svādvannaṃ vā bhayottaram |
vicāryaṃ khalu paśyāmi tat sukhaṃ yatra nirvṛtiḥ || 1.144 ||
Obtaining water with out
difficulties and obtaining delicious food attended with fear, of the two, I
find, that whatever is obtained with
ease there lies happiness.
वरं वनं व्याघ्र-गजेन्द्र-सेवितं
द्रुमालयः पत्र-फलाम्बु-भक्षितम् ।
तृणानि शय्या वसनं च वल्कलं
न बन्धु-मध्ये धन-हीन-जीवनम् ॥ १४५ ॥
varaṃ
vanaṃ vyāghra-gajendra-sevitaṃ
drumālayaḥ patra-phalāmbu-bhakṣitam |
tṛṇāni śayyā vasanaṃ ca valkalaṃ
na bandhu-madhye dhana-hīna-jīvanam || 1.145 ||
You can
stay in a forest infested with tigers and elephants ; you can eat the leaves
and fruits in a forest; sleep in a bed of grass; wear dress made of leaves; but
it is most painful to live in penury amongst one’s own relatives.
संसार-विषय-वृक्षस्य द्वे एव रसवत् फले ।
काव्यामृत-रसास्वादः सङ्गमः सज्जनैः सह ॥ १४६ ॥
saṃsāra-viṣaya-vṛkṣasya
dve eva rasavat phale |
kāvyāmṛta-rasāsvādaḥ saṅgamaḥ sajjanaiḥ saha || 1.146 ||
Of the poisonous tree of
samsara there are only two juicy fruits; tasting the juice of poetry and the
society of the good.
सत्-सङ्गः केशवे भक्तिर् गङ्गाम्भसि निमज्जनम् ।
असारे खलु संसारे त्रीणि साराणि भावयेत् ॥ १४७ ॥
sat-saṅgaḥ
keśave bhaktir gaṅgāmbhasi nimajjanam |
asāre khalu saṃsāre trīṇi sārāṇi bhāvayet || 1.147 ||
In this
evanescent world consider only these three things as of any substance – company
of good people, devotion to Sri Krishna and bathing in the waters of the Ganga.
