Hoarding Vs Liberality
असम्भोगेन सामान्यं कृपणस्य धनं परैः ।
अस्येदम् इति सम्बन्धो हानौ दुःखेन गम्यते ॥ १५४ ॥
asambhogena sāmānyaṃ kṛpaṇasya dhanaṃ paraiḥ |
asyedam iti sambandho hānau duḥkhena gamyate || 1.154 ||
Through non-enjoyment of his wealth by a miser he makes it is as good as common property of others; that it belonged to him is known by the sorrow caused to him when it is lost.

न देवाय न विप्राय न बन्धुभ्यो न चात्मने ।
कृपणस्य धनं याति वह्नि-तस्कर-पार्थिवैः ॥ १५५ ॥
na devāya na viprāya na bandhubhyo na cātmane |
kṛpaṇasya dhanaṃ yāti vahni-taskara-pārthivaiḥ ||1.155 ||
The miser who does not spend his wealth for yagyas, charity to vedic scholars, on friends and relatives or for his own enjoyment loses it due to fire or theft or being taken away by the king.
कृपणस्य धनं याति वह्नि-तस्कर-पार्थिवैः ॥ १५५ ॥

Liberality accompanied by kind words, knowledge without conceit, heroism endowed with forbearance, wealth spent in charity; these four are rare in this world.
त्यागं सहितं च वित्तं दुर्लभम् एतच् चतुर् भद्रम् ॥ १५६ ॥

कर्तव्यः सञ्चयो नित्यं न तु कार्यो ऽतिसञ्चयः ।
अतिसञ्चय-शीलो ऽयं धनुषा जम्बुको हतः ॥ १५७ ॥
kartavyaḥ sañcayo nityaṃ na tu kāryo 'tisañcayaḥ |
atisañcaya-śīlo 'yaṃ dhanuṣā jambuko hataḥ || 1.157 ||
Generally, accumulation to be made but excessive accumulation to be avoided; Behold! The jackal which indulged in excessive hoarding was slain by a bow.
अतिसञ्चय-शीलो ऽयं धनुषा जम्बुको हतः ॥ १५७ ॥

जलम् अग्निर् विषं शस्तं क्षुद् व्याधिः पतनं गिरेः ।
निमित्तं किञ्चिद् आसाद्य देही प्राणैर् विमुच्यते ॥ १५८ ॥

nimittaṃ kiñcid āsādya dehī prāṇair vimucyate || 1.158 ||
A creature loses its life through various causes like from water, fire, poison, a weapon, starvation, a disease, falling from a mountain.

सुखान्य् अपि तथा मन्ये दैवम् अत्रातिरिच्यते ॥ १५९ ॥

sukhāny api tathā manye daivam atrātiricyate || 1.159 ||

The man will last for a month, deer and boar will last for two months, a snake will satisfy one day’s hunger and the bow string should be eaten to-day.
