MITRALABHA-22-GAINING OF FRIENDS

 SUBHASHITHANI:532

yad dadāti yad aśnāti tad eva dhanino dhanam |
anye mṛtasya krīḍanti dārair api dhanair api || 1.161 ||
Whatever is given in charity or enjoyed by him is the wealth of a rich man; After his death others play with his women and property.

yad dadāsi viśiṣṭebhyo yac cāśnāsi dine dine |
tat te vittam ahaṃ manye śeṣaṃ kasyāpi rakṣasi || 1.162 ||
Whatever is given to the worthy, whatever is enjoyed day to day that alone I consider as your wealth. The rest you are keeping for someone else.

nāprāyam abhivāñchanti naṣṭaṃ necchanti śocitum |
āpatsv api na muhyanti narāḥ paṇḍita-buddhayaḥ || 1.163 ||
Wise men do not wish for what is unattainable; they do not lament over what is lost, also they do not lose heart under adversities.

śāstrāṇy adhītyāpi bhavanti mūrkhā
yas tu kriyāvān puruṣaḥ sa vidvān |
sucintitaṃ cauṣadham āturāṇāṃ
na nāma-mātreṇa karoty arogam || 1.164 ||
People remain ignorant even after studying the shastras. Only those who put knowledge in to practice are considered as wisemen. Even a well-devised remedy does not cure a disease by merely mentioning it’s name.

na svalpam apy adhyavasāya-bhīroḥ
karoti vijñāna-vidhir guṇaṃ hi |
andhasya kiṃ hasta-tala-sthito 'pi
prakāśayaty artham iha pradīpaḥ || 1.165 ||
One who is scared to do even a little bit of studies can’t benefit by science; the lamp placed on the palm of a blind, can’t illumine him.

sukham āpatitaṃ sevyaṃ duḥkham āpatitaṃ tathā |
cakravat parivartante duḥkhāni ca sukhāni ca || 1.166 ||
As happiness is to be enjoyed, as it comes, misfortunes should also be accepted and experienced, as they come; pleasures and sorrows keep coming by rotation.

nipānam iva maṇḍūkāḥ saraḥ pūrṇam ivāṇḍajāḥ |
sodyogaṃ naram āyānti vivaśāḥ sarva-sampadaḥ || 1.167 ||
Wealth goes uninvited to those men who put in effort tirelessly like frogs go to wells and birds to lakes full of water.

utsāha-saṃpannam adīrgha-sūtraṃ
 kriyā-vidhijñaṃ vyasaneṣv asaktam |
śūraṃ kṛtajñaṃ dṛḍha-sauhṛdaṃ ca-
 lakṣmīḥ svayaṃ vāñchati vāsa-hetoḥ || 1.168 ||
If a person is endowed with enthusiasm, promptness, business expertise, freedom from anxiety, brave, grateful, firm, and friendly behaviour, then Mahalakshmi, the goddess of wealth herself goes to reside in the residence of such a person.
