arthena tu vihīnasya puruṣasyālpa-medhasaḥ |
kriyā sarvā vinaśyanti grīṣme kusarito yathā || 1.119 ||
Of a person who has no money and a little intellect, all his actions get destroyed like a small river in summer.
yasyārthās tasya mitrāṇi yasyārthās tasya bāndhavāḥ |
yasyārthāḥ sa pumān loke yasyārthāḥ sa hi paṇḍitaḥ || 1.120 ||
One blessed with wealth is surrounded by the relatives/friends, considered to be honourable and learned.

aputrasya gṛhaṃ śūnyaṃ san-mitra-rahitasya ca |
mūrkhasya ca diśaḥ śūnyāḥ sarva-śūnyā daridratā || 1.121 ||
The house of a childless person is shoonya (void), for a person without a good friend it is forever void, the four quarters are void for the fool and for the poor everything is shoonya (void).

aputrasya gṛhaṃ śūnyaṃ san-mitra-rahitasya ca |

dāridryān maraṇād vāpi dāridryam avaraṃ smṛtam |
alpa-kleśena maraṇaṃ dāridryam atiduḥsaham || 1.122 ||
In comparison to death poverty is considered inferior; death can happen with minor affliction where as poverty is extremely painful.

sā buddhir apratihatā vacanaṃ tad eva |
arthoṣmaṇā virahitaḥ puruṣaḥ sa eva anyaḥ
kṣaṇena bhavatīti vicitram etat || 1.123 ||
The man is the same – his senses are the same, his name is the same, his intelligence is the same, he speaks the same words; yet once he loses his wealth, It is indeed strange that he is treated like someone else.

A poor man's words carry no weight, However,
meaningful and profound.

atyanta-vimukhe daive vyarthe yatne ca pauruṣe |
manasvino daridrasya vanād anyat kutaḥ sukham || 1.124 ||
When fate is totally unfavourable, both effort and manly prowess become in vain. Men of intellect in poverty, where can they find peace except in the forest?

manasvī miryate kāmaṃ kārpaṇyaṃ na tu gacchati |
api nirvāṇam āyāti nānalo yāti śītatām || 1.125 ||
A strong-minded person can die on self-will, but will never attain pitiable state. Fire gets extinguished, but never becomes cool.

kusuma-stavakasyeva dve vṛttī tu manasvinaḥ |
sarveṣāṃ mūrdhni vā tiṣṭhed viśīryeta vane'thavā || 1.126 ||
Just like the
flowers, the position of the high-minded is also twofold. Either to be on the
head of the people - like a garland or wither away in a forest - in isolation.
