SUHRID BHEDA- SEPARATION OF FRIENDS- 5

 SUBHASHITHANI:542

 The Wedge-Pulling Monkey

avyāpareṣu vyāpāraṃ yo naraḥ kartum icchati |
sa eva nidhanaṃ yāti kīlotpaṭīva vānaraḥ || 2.30 ||

Anyone who tries to poke into matters which are none of his business,
meets his end, just like the monkey who tried to remove the wedge.

parādhikāra-carcā yaḥ kuryāt svāmi-hitecchayā |
sa viṣīdati cītkārād gardabhas tāḍito yathā || 2.31 ||

He who interferes with another’s business for the sake of his master’s good , comes to grief like the ass that was beaten for braying.

yācate kārya-kāle yaḥ sa kiṃ-bhṛtyaḥ sa kiṃ-suhṛt |
bhṛtyān sambhāṣayed yas tu kārya-kāle sa kiṃ-prabhuḥ || 2.32 ||

He is no good servant; he is no good friend who asks for rewards at the time of carrying out a job; He is no good master who only talks sweetly when the servant is in dire needs.

yācate kārya-kāle yaḥ sa kiṃ-bhṛtyaḥ sa kiṃ-suhṛt |
bhṛtyān sambhāṣayed yas tu kārya-kāle sa kiṃ-prabhuḥ || 2.32 ||

He is no good servant; he is no good friend who asks for rewards at the time of carrying out a job; He is no good master who only talks sweetly when the servant is in dire needs.

āśritānāṃ bhṛtau svāmi-sevāyāṃ dharma-sevane |
putrasyotpādane caiva na santi pratihastakāḥ ||2. 33 ||

In helping the dependents, doing service to the master, performing religious duties and begetting a son, substitutes will not do.

pṛṣṭhataḥ sevayed arkaṃ jaṭhareṇa hutāśanam |
svāminaṃ sarva-bhāvena paralokam amāyayā || 2.34 ||

The sun’s heat should be served  by taking it on one’s back, fire by the stomach, master by body and soul, the other world through purity of heart. (Donkey to a dog)

The wise men serve the kings so that they could help their friends and punish their enemies; merely filling up the belly is indulged by one and all.

yasmin jīvati jīvanti bahavaḥ sa tu jīvatu |
kāko 'pi kiṃ na kurute cañcvā svodara-pūraṇam || 2.37 ||

He alone really lives, by whose living many others live; look! does not a crow fill his belly with his bill?

Some men take to serving others for five puraanas (a low value coin), some others for lacs, while there are people who will not accept servitude for anything.
