The Wedge-Pulling Monkey
अव्यापरेषु व्यापारं यो नरः कर्तुम् इच्छति ।
स एव निधनं याति कीलोत्पटीव वानरः ॥ ३० ॥
avyāpareṣu
vyāpāraṃ yo naraḥ kartum icchati |
sa eva nidhanaṃ yāti kīlotpaṭīva vānaraḥ || 2.30 ||
meets his end, just like the monkey who tried to remove the wedge.
पराधिकार-चर्चा यः कुर्यात् स्वामि-हितेच्छया ।
स विषीदति चीत्काराद् गर्दभस् ताडितो यथा ॥ ३१ ॥
parādhikāra-carcā yaḥ kuryāt
svāmi-hitecchayā |
sa viṣīdati
cītkārād gardabhas tāḍito yathā ||
2.31 ||
He who interferes with another’s business for the sake of
his master’s good , comes to grief like the ass that was beaten for braying.
याचते कार्य-काले यः स किं-भृत्यः स किं-सुहृत् ।
भृत्यान् सम्भाषयेद् यस् तु कार्य-काले स किं-प्रभुः ॥ ३२ ॥
yācate kārya-kāle yaḥ sa kiṃ-bhṛtyaḥ sa
kiṃ-suhṛt |
bhṛtyān
sambhāṣayed yas tu kārya-kāle sa kiṃ-prabhuḥ || 2.32 ||
He is no good servant; he is no good friend who asks for rewards at the time of carrying out a job; He is no good master who only talks sweetly when the servant is in dire needs.
भृत्यान् सम्भाषयेद् यस् तु कार्य-काले स किं-प्रभुः ॥ ३२ ॥
yācate kārya-kāle yaḥ sa kiṃ-bhṛtyaḥ sa
kiṃ-suhṛt |
bhṛtyān
sambhāṣayed yas tu kārya-kāle sa kiṃ-prabhuḥ || 2.32 ||

आश्रितानां भृतौ स्वामि-सेवायां धर्म-सेवने ।
पुत्रस्योत्पादने चैव न सन्ति प्रतिहस्तकाः ॥ ३३ ॥
āśritānāṃ bhṛtau svāmi-sevāyāṃ
dharma-sevane |
putrasyotpādane
caiva na santi pratihastakāḥ ||2.
33 ||
In helping the dependents, doing service to the master,
performing religious duties and begetting a son, substitutes will not do.
पृष्ठतः सेवयेद् अर्कं जठरेण हुताशनम् ।
स्वामिनं सर्व-भावेन परलोकम् अमायया ॥ ३४ ॥
pṛṣṭhataḥ sevayed arkaṃ jaṭhareṇa
hutāśanam |
svāminaṃ
sarva-bhāvena paralokam amāyayā ||
2.34 ||
The sun’s heat should be served by taking it on one’s back, fire by the stomach, master by body and soul, the
other world through purity of heart. (Donkey to a dog)
सुहृदाम् उपकार-कारणाद् द्विषताम् अप्य् अपकार-कारणात् ।
नृप-संश्रय इष्यते बुधैर् जठरं को न बिभर्ति केवलम् ॥ ३५ ॥
suhṛdām
upakāra-kāraṇād dviṣatām apy apakāra-kāraṇāt |
nṛpa-saṃśraya
iṣyate budhair jaṭharaṃ ko na bibharti kevalam || 2.35 ||
The wise men serve the
kings so that they could help their friends and punish their enemies; merely filling
up the belly is indulged by one and all.
यस्मिन् जीवति जीवन्ति बहवः स तु जीवतु ।
काको ऽपि किं न कुरुते चञ्च्वा स्वोदर-पूरणम् ॥ ३७ ॥
yasmin
jīvati jīvanti bahavaḥ sa tu jīvatu |
kāko 'pi kiṃ
na kurute cañcvā svodara-pūraṇam || 2.37 ||
He alone really lives, by whose living many others live; look! does not a crow fill his belly with his bill?
पञ्चभिर् याति दासत्वं पुराणैः को ऽपि मानवः ।
को ऽपि लक्षैः कृती को ऽपि लक्षैर् अपि न लभ्यते ॥ ३८ ॥
pañcabhir
yāti dāsatvaṃ purāṇaiḥ ko 'pi mānavaḥ |
ko 'pi lakṣaiḥ kṛtī ko 'pi lakṣair api na labhyate ||2.38 ||
Some men take to serving
others for five puraanas (a low value coin), some others for lacs, while
there are people who will not accept servitude for anything.
