GRUHAM-गृहं - HOUSE (2)

 SUBHASHITHANI:378

While on the subject of gruhastaashrama, I happened to stumble upon two beautiful slokas, one in praise and the other denouncing it. I have pleasure in including them  in this blog and hope readers will find it interesting.

Truptvaa tapasvi Vipin kshudhaarto
Guham samaayaati sadaanna daatuh I
Bhuktvaa sa chaannam pradadaati tasmai
Tapo vibhagam bhajate hi tasya II
A sage performing tapas in the forest, when he feels the need for satisfying his hunger, visits a house-holder who provides him with food. After taking the food he gives a portion of his religious merit(punya) to the house-holder.
Manusmruti
yathā vāyuṃ samāśritya vartante sarvajantavaḥ |
tathā gṛhasthamāśritya vartante sarva āśramāḥ ||3. 77 ||
Just as all Creatures subsist by deriving support from air, so do the other states subsist by deriving support from the House holder.

। Mahabharat 12.234.

The householder is the basic support of all types of Righteousness.

Thirukkural-41
The house holder is the mainstay of all who follow the other paths of life.
Ushna kale jalam dadhyaat sheeta kaale hutaasanam I
Praavrut kaale gruham deyam sarva kaale cha bhojanam II
In summer provide water, In winter provide fire-place, In rainy season provide shelter in your house and provide food at all times.
Aputrasya gruham shunyam hrudayam dukhitam sadaa I
Pitrudeava manushyaanam naanrunitvam sutam vina II
The house of the sonless is void, always feeling pain at heart; The debt to the fore-fathers and devatas can not be repaid without a son.
In this house the children are crying, water is leaking everywhere, courtyard is full of mire, bed has bed-bugs, food is dry and tasteless, smoke everywhere all the time. The house wife is rude in her speech, man of the house is angry all the time; bath has to be in cold water ; fie upon being a householder.
In this house there is always happiness, the children are intelligent, wife is sweet spoken, good friends around, wealth is plenty, husband and wife have love for each other, servants are obedient; the house is filled with guests, puja, and good food. There are always wise men around; it is a pleasure to be a householder.
Atithir balakah patneee jananee janakstatha I
Panchaite gruhinah poshyaa itare n svashaktitah II
Guest, children, wife, mother and father, these five must be protected by the house holder; others he can help according to his capability.

GRUHAM-गृहं - HOUSE

 SUBHASHITHANI:377

Vanepi doshaa prabhavanti raaginaam
gruhepi panchendriya nigrahas tapah I
Akutsite karmani yah pravartate
Nivvrutta raagasya gruham tapovanam II

The man filled with desires will find no solace in the forest. On the other hand  keeping senses under control is a penance even at home. If one is sincere in his work and rejects all lustful desires – his own house becomes a tapovanam.

Maataa yasya gruhe naasti bhaaryaa cha priyavaadini I
Aranyam tena gantavyam yataaranyam tatha gruham II
In whose house there is no mother and the wife is not soft-spoken, what he will do by going to a jungle because as is the jungle so is the home for him.

Knowledge is a person's friend in foreign land, at home wife is the best friend, medicine is a sick person's friend, 'dharma' is the only friend after death.

Vittena rakshyate  dharmo  Vidyaa yogena  rakshyate.
Mrudunaa rakshyate  bhoopah  satstriyaa rakshyate  gruham.
The Morality is sustained by charitable use of wealth, and knowledge gets protected by its continuous use.  A king must be protected (served) very politely and gently, and a home gets protection by its virtuous women family members.
Hitopadesa
aputrasya gṛhaṃ śūnyaṃ san-mitra-rahitasya ca |
mūrkhasya ca diśaḥ śūnyāḥ sarva-śūnyā daridratā ||1.121 ||
The house of the sonless is void, and so is of one who has no friends; all the quarters are void to a fool; but everything is void to a poor man.

arthanaasha.n manastaapa.n gRRihe dushcharitaani cha

Wise people do not talk about - loss of wealth, sadness in heart, family scandal, getting cheated, and insult.

The person who has a bad wife, a betrayer as a friend, a servant who answers back,  and a snake in house; it is same as living in perpetual death.

arthā gṛhe nivartante śmaśāne mitrabāndhavāḥ
sukṛtaṃ duṣkṛtaṃ caiva gacchantamanugacchati  mahābhārata
Wealth gets left behind at home, friends and family at the crematorium. It is one’s good and evil actions that accompany oneself after death

PANKHAH- पङ्कः , कर्दमः - MUD, MIRE, CLAY

 SUBHASHITHANI:376

Dharmartham yasya vitteha varam tasya nireehataa I
Prakshalanaddhi pankasya duradasprshanam varam ॥Shaunaka gita
Desire for wealth even if it is for religious duties it is preferable to avoid it; It is better not to touch mud instead of washing it off afterwards.

Even a dull person becomes sharp by keeping company with the wise, just like the turbid water which becomes clear when treated with the dust-removing fruit.
(Malavikaagnimitra-Kalidasa )

asato’pi bhavati guṇavān sadbhyo’pi paraṁ bhavantyasadvṛttāḥ|
paṅkādudeti kamalaṁ krimayaḥ kamālādapi bhavanti||
A virtuous person may spring even from a bad source and one of bad conduct even from the virtuous. The (beautiful) lotus springs from (dirty) mud, but worms are seen to spring even from a lotus.

Silk is spun by a [humble] worm; gold is born of a rock; the holy dūrvā grass springs from a cow’s hair; The lotus, from mud; the moon, from ocean; the beetle from dung; Fire flashes out of wood; the emerald, from a serpent’s hood; orpiment, from the bile of cow; A person of merit shines by the light of his own merits; of what consequence is birth?

Alas! My son, you did not acquire knowledge in the bygone nights.
Because of that, in the company of learned people, you are like a cow with its legs stuck in clay.-Hitopaesa
duggā uddharath’attāna pake sanno’va  kuñjaro. ( Buddhist Proverbs) Pali
Like as the mired elephant sunk in mud pulls himself up, elevate your own mind from the slough (of passions).

A Samasya Pooranam by Kalidasa -‘

Glory of a chaste woman- Even after seeing her son falling in to the fire, wife didn't wake up her sleeping husband. By the power of her chastity the fire became cool like a sandal paste.

Without completely getting rid of the enemy fame or stability can not be achieved; Just as in a pond clear water can not be obtained without clearing  the mud and dirt.

The wealth of the inferior men is never useful to others; just as the shadow of the tree fallen on slushy ground benefits no one.
