While on the subject of gruhastaashrama, I happened to stumble upon two beautiful slokas, one in praise and the other denouncing it. I have pleasure in including them in this blog and hope readers will find it interesting.
तप्त्वा तपस्वी विपिने क्षुधार्तो
गृहं समायाति सदान्न दातुः ।
भुक्त्वा स चान्नं प्रददाति तस्मै
तपो विभागं भजते हि तस्य ॥
Guham samaayaati sadaanna daatuh I
Bhuktvaa sa chaannam pradadaati tasmai
Tapo vibhagam bhajate hi tasya II
A sage performing tapas in the forest, when he feels the need for satisfying his hunger, visits a house-holder who provides him with food. After taking the food he gives a portion of his religious merit(punya) to the house-holder.

Just as all Creatures subsist by deriving support from air, so do the other states subsist by deriving support from the House holder.

tathā gṛhasthamāśritya vartante sarva āśramāḥ ||3. 77 ||

गृहस्थस्त्वेष धर्माणां सर्वेषां मूलमुच्यते ।। Mahabharat 12.234.
The householder is the
basic support of all types of Righteousness.

The house of the sonless is void, always feeling pain at heart; The debt to the fore-fathers and devatas can not be repaid without a son.

आतिथ्यं शिवपूजनं प्रतिदिनं मिष्टान्नपानं गृहे
साधोः सङ्गमुपासते हि सततं धन्यो गृहस्थाश्रमः ॥
अतिथिर्बालकः पत्नी जननी जनकस्तथा।
पञ्चैते गृहिणः पोष्या इतरे न स्वशक्तितः॥
Panchaite gruhinah poshyaa itare n svashaktitah II
Guest, children, wife, mother and father, these five must be protected by the house holder; others he can help according to his capability.
