SUBHASHITHANI:368
Sanjeevaka continues to speak to Damanaka about his views on how death in a battle is hailed even by sages:
Gurorapy avaliptasya kaaryaakaaryam ajaanatah
Utpathham pratipannasya kaaryam bhavati shaasanam II 330
One who is haughty, who does not know whether what he does is right or wrong and who has taken to the wrong path is to be disciplined even if he is guru, parent or an elder in age or learning. (Ramayana-2.11.13 )
Deergau buddhimato baahoo taabhyam himsati himsikam II332
He who has offended the great should not feel confident of safety at the thought that he is far away; for, the arms of an intelligent person stretch long with which he destroys the offender.
Svargaishino daanashataih suvruttaih I
Kshanena yaan yaanti raneshu dheeraah
Praanaan samujjanti hi y shusheelaah II1.332
Men desirous of heaven do not obtain those worlds by bathing at holy places, by practicing penance, or by giving hundreds of gifts, which noble warriors get in a moment by dying in battles.
mṛtaiḥ samprāpyate svargo jīvadbhiḥ kīrtir uttamā |
tad ubhāv api śūrāṇāṃ guṇāv etau sudurlabhau || 333 ||
If they die, they attain liberation, if they live, they get immense fame. These two characteristics of courageous men are seldom found in others.
shuraya yasya pavishechcha vaktre I
Tatsomapaanena samam bhavechcha
sangraama yagye vidhivat pradishtam II334
If blood oozes out from the forehead, while fighting, and enters the mouth that is on a par with a drink of soma juice, for a fight is a religious rite properly performed; so it has been represented by sages. ( This is a quotation from Parashara smriti-3.38 )
Yagyir bhoori udhakshinaih suvihitaih samprapyat yat phalam I
Sattirtha aashrama vaasa homa niyamais chandraanaadyaih krutaih
Pumbhistat phalam aahav vinihitaih samprapyate tatkshanaat II335
That fruit is immediately obtained by those who are killed in a battle, which is obtained by men who perform sacrifices in which dakshinas are given ; and by such means as living in a hermitage in a holy place, offering oblations to the gods,
balavantaṃ ripuṃ dṛṣṭvā kilātmānaṃ pragopayet |
balavadbhiś ca kartavyā śarac-candra-prakāśatā || 336 ||
On
seeing that an enemy is powerful one should verily hide oneself, while
the mighty should display their valour in the spirit of mercy; as the light of
the autumnal moon is bright but not dazzling.
śatror
vikramam ajñātvā vairam ārabhate hi yaḥ |
sa parābhavam āpnoti samudraṣ ṭiṭṭibhād yathā || 337 ||
If
one starts a fight, without knowing the strength of his enemy, he will surely
be defeated. like the mighty ocean was insulted by a small Tittibha bird.
