RAMA-राम:- SLOKAS FROM RAMAYANA

  SUBHASHITHANI:671

Sri NArada to Valmiki

People have heard his name as Rama, who was born in the race of king Ikshvaku, having steady nature, possessing incomprehensible prowess, self-effulgent, self-commanding and subjecting senses under his control.

He (Sri Rama) is a great intellectual, adherent to rules, eloquent, handsome, destroyer of foes (sins), broadshouldered, strongarmed, having conchshaped neck and prominent cheeks.

Pious, firm in his vows, he is ever intent on doing good to his subjects. He is, illustrious, wise, and pure at heart. He is obedient to elders (or accessible to those who are dependent on him) and ever meditating (on the means of protecting those who take refuge in him).

Auspicious like Brahma, Sri Rama is the sustainer of this world, destroyer of enemies and protector of all living beings and of the moral code.

Sri Rama knows the true meaning of all scriptures and has a retentive memory. He is talented (possessing brightness of conception). He is beloved and well disposed towards all people (and courteous even towards those who have done him harm). He has an unperturbed mind (even in times of extreme grief) and is circumspect (in doing right things at the right time).

Sri Rama, like sea to rivers, is accessible to men of virtue and has equal disposition towards all. He always has a pleasing appearance.

Sri Rama, bestowed with all virtues, enhanced the joys of Kausalya, He is like the sea in deportment and like Himavant in fortitude.

Sri Rama is like Vishnu in prowess, the Moon in pleasing appearance, the all-consuming fire in anger, the earth in patience, Kubera in charity and the Sun in steadfastness.

AYODHYA-अयाेध्या- SLOKAS FROM RAMAYANA

 SUBHASHITHANI:670

On the banks of river Sarayu, a great and prosperous country named Kosala, abundant in food grains and wealth and inhabited by contended people, was situated.

In the country called Kosala was the famous capital city of Ayodhya built by the lord of men, Manu .

The people living in that excellent city were happy, virtuous, wellread (in the Vedas and the sastras) and content with the possessions of their own. They were free from avarice. And always spoke the truth.

In that best of cities, there was not even a single householder who had not
adequate wealth

The lustful, the miserly, the unscholarly and atheists were not to be seen anywhere in the city of Ayodhya.

All men and women (in the city) were of righteous conduct, fully self-controlled and prosperous with good conduct and behaviour. They were pure like maharshis.

In the city of Ayodhya there was none who did not kindle the sacrificial fire. There was none who did not perform a sacrifice. There were no thieves or mean-minded persons or persons of improper descent of mixed castes.

That time there was no atheist, no liar and none ignorant of the sastras. There was no one who was jealous, incompetent or illiterate.

That city was ably governed by Dasaratha, scion of the Ikshvakus, in the same way as it was previously administered by (Manu), the foremost among men and and the most intelligent.

KULAM- कुलं -(2) CLAN.RACE.FAMILY

 SUBHASHITHANI:669

A family is ruined by a bad son, youth will be lost due to a bad woman, a bad food spoils the whole day, wealth gets destroyed by not being generous to others.

The following two slokas are from Devi Bhagavatham and should be read together:

16
A family loses its fame and is ruined by a bad son; an unworthy son ruins future life and causes pain of suffering in hell.
17
Family connections are spoilt by a bad son and life itself is lost by a bad wife. Bad food spoils the day, how ca there be happiness with a untrustworthy friend.
He who has money is of higher caste, he is a scholar, he is the knowledge of scriptures, he is the ability to judge others, he is the best speaker, his personality is effective.
Morality is maintained by truth, knowledge is retained by practice, appearance becomes attractive by cleanliness and the prestige of the clan is maintained by virtuous conduct.
Na kulam vrittahinasya pramanamithi mein matih.
Anteshvapi hi jaatanaam vritmev vishishyate
A person cannot be identified by his high or low caste. A man is recognized by his good conduct, even if he is born in a low caste.
Ekena shshkavrukshena dahyamaanena vahninaa
Dahyate tadvanam sarvam dushputrena kulam yathaa.
Even if a single dried up tree in a forest catches fire, it destroys the entire forest by the fire spreading out, just like a bad and unworthy son destroys by his actions and behaviour the credibility and fame of a family to which he belongs.
Pradoshe deepakashchandrah prabhate deepako Ravih,
trailokye deepako Dharmah suputrah kuladeepakah.
In the evening the Moon brightens the sky and in the morning the Sun does it. Similarly the World is brightened by 'Dharma' and so also an illustrious and honorable son brings name and fame to his family like a lamp
 shedding bright light.

This body, children, wives will not stay for ever. Neither will your personal army. Even after seeing them destroyed, you are not
seeing the truth that none of it is permanent.

One who reads, writes, perceives, asks questions, takes shelter of wise people, his intelligence grows in the same way as the petals of a lotus grow in the sun's rays.

There are four types of blind who can’t see the world. A person blind by birth. one blinded by greed/desire; he who is arrogant ; nor does an intoxicated one.

Owl cannot see during day, while crow cannot see during night; strange that an infatuated person cannot see during day or night.

An evil person can see most trivial  faults in others, but he cannot see the big faults like Bilva leaves in himself.

People are generally oblivious of  their own shortcomings or defects, but  are keen to observe the shortcomings of  others.   Had they noticed or cared to notice their own shortcomings, there would  never have any need to observe the shortcomings of others.

A fish is attracted by the flesh but does not see the iron part behind
It ; similarly a man after pleasure sees only the pleasant and forget the possible pain later.
