satāṃ vacanam ādiṣṭaṃ madena na karoti yaḥ |
sa vināśam avāpnoti ghaṇṭoṣṭra iva satvaram || 4.74 ||

One who ignores the advice of the wise due to arrogance soon faces destruction like the camel with the bell tied around its neck.

Those who provide good advice and wish for their welfare never face difficulties in this or the world after.

.-Thirukkural 987
Where is the superiority of the worthy man if he does not do good to even those that do harm to him?

hatas tvaṃ prāpsyasi svargaṃ jīvan gṛham atho yaśaḥ |
yudhyamānasya te bhāvi guṇa-dvayam anuttamam || 4.77 ||

If you get killed in the fight, you will attain liberation. If you live, you will achieve fame, and also get back your house. He who fights his battles gains, irrespective of the results. (The monkey to the crocodile)

antyāvastho 'pi mahān svāmi-guṇān na jahāti śuddhatayā |
na śveta-bhāvam ujjhati śaṅkhaḥ śikhi-bhukta-mukto 'pi || 4.79 ||

The story of the farmer’s naked wife -

The crocodile, like the old man of the sea, is going on and on with further stories to the monkey:

yādṛśaṃ mama pāṇḍityaṃ tādṛśaṃ dviguṇaṃ tava |
nābhūj jāro na bhartā ca kiṃ nirīkṣasi nagnike
 || 4.69 ||

You have double the intelligence that I have. Your lover is gone. You lost your husband as well. Oh naked lady, what are you waiting for?

gṛdhreṇāpahṛtaṃ māṃsaṃ matsyo 'pi salilaṃ gataḥ |
matsya-māṃsa-paribhraṣṭe kiṃ nirīkṣyasi jambuke || 4.70 ||

The meat was stolen by the vulture, the fish went into the water, you lost the meat, and the fish, so what are you waiting for, o fox?

mitraṃ hy amitratāṃ yātam aparaṃ me priyā mitrā |
gṛham anyena ca vyāptaṃ kim adyāpi bhaviṣyati || 4.71 ||

I have lost a good friend, my wife is no more, my house has been occupied by some one else. What more calamities remain to happen? ( The crocodile thinking to himself )

kṣate prahārā nipatanty abhīkṣṇam

 SUBHASHITHANI:464

na gṛhaṃ gṛham ity āhur gṛhiṇī gṛham ucyate |
gṛhaṃ tu gṛhiṇī-hīnaṃ kāntārān nātiricyate || 4.58 ||

The wise claim that a house is not a house in the absence of a wife; without her it is worse than even a forest.

Where is indigence if the wife is worthy? And where Is wealth if worth is not in her?

vṛkṣa-mūle'pi dayitā yatra tiṣṭhati tad gṛham |
prāsādo 'pi tayā hīno 'raṇya-sadṛśaḥ smṛtaḥ || 4.59 ||

Even under a tree where there is a beloved that is home; without her even in a palace that is like staying in wilderness.

mātā yasya gṛhe nāsti bhāryā ca priya-vādinī |
araṇyaṃ tena gantavyaṃ yathāraṇyaṃ tathā gṛham || 4.60 ||

A person whose mother is not in his house and his wife always offends him by her speech, he should go to the forest because for him both the house and the forest are the same.

yā bhāryā duṣṭa-caritrā satataṃ kalaha-priyā |
bhāryā-rūpeṇa sā jñeyā vidagdhair dāruṇā jarā || 4.61 ||

A wife whose actions are wicked and who is always fond of quarrelling, wise men should know it as cruel old age in wife’s form.

tasmāt sarva-prayatnena nāmāpi parivarjayet |
strīṇām iha hi sarvāsāṃ ya icchet sukham ātmanaḥ || 4.62 ||

Therefore, that man who wants to be happy should, with every effort, avoid  even mentioning her name.

yad-antas tan na jihvāyāṃ yaj jihvāyāṃ na tad-bahiḥ |
yad-bahis tan na kurvanti vicitra-caritāḥ striyaḥ || 4.63 ||

That which is in their heart is not what is in their tongue; what is in their tongue they do not mean in reality; what they say they never execute; strange is the behaviour of women.

ke nāma na vinaśyanti mithyā-jñānān nitambinīm |
ramyāṃ te upasarpanti dīpābhāṃ śalabhā yathā || 4.64 ||

Who can escape destruction, who by misapprehension approach a beautiful woman thinking her to be attractive, like moths flying towards the flame of a lamp.

antar-viṣa-mayā hy etā bahiś caiva manoramāḥ |
guñjā-phala-samākārā yoṣitaḥ kena nirmitāḥ || 4.65 ||

For, these women are, by their nature full of poison inside and outwardly appear to be attractive, thus resembling ‘gunja’ fruit.

( All the above slokas are narrated by the crocodile to the monkey )
