na gṛhaṃ gṛham ity āhur
gṛhiṇī gṛham ucyate |
gṛhaṃ tu gṛhiṇī-hīnaṃ kāntārān
nātiricyate || 4.58 ||
The wise
claim that a house is not a house in the absence of a wife; without her it is
worse than even a forest.
vṛkṣa-mūle'pi dayitā yatra
tiṣṭhati tad gṛham |
prāsādo 'pi tayā hīno 'raṇya-sadṛśaḥ
smṛtaḥ || 4.59 ||
Even under a tree where there is a beloved that is home; without her even in a palace that is like staying in wilderness.
mātā yasya gṛhe nāsti
bhāryā ca priya-vādinī |
araṇyaṃ tena gantavyaṃ
yathāraṇyaṃ tathā gṛham || 4.60 ||
A person
whose mother is not in his house and his wife always offends him by her speech,
he should go to the forest because for him both the house and the forest are
the same.
yā bhāryā duṣṭa-caritrā
satataṃ kalaha-priyā |
bhāryā-rūpeṇa sā jñeyā
vidagdhair dāruṇā jarā || 4.61 ||
A wife whose actions are
wicked and who is always fond of quarrelling, wise men should know it as cruel
old age in wife’s form.

tasmāt

strīṇām iha hi sarvāsāṃ ya icchet sukham ātmanaḥ || 4.62 ||
Therefore, that man who wants
to be happy should, with every effort, avoid even mentioning her name.
yad-antas

yad-bahis tan na kurvanti vicitra-caritāḥ striyaḥ || 4.63 ||
That which is in their
heart is not what is in their tongue; what is in their tongue they do not mean
in reality; what they say they never execute; strange is the behaviour of
women.
ke nāma

ramyāṃ te
upasarpanti dīpābhāṃ śalabhā yathā || 4.64 ||
Who can escape destruction,
who by misapprehension approach a beautiful woman thinking her to be attractive,
like moths flying towards the flame of a lamp.
antar-viṣa-mayā
hy etā bahiś caiva manoramāḥ |
guñjā-phala-samākārā yoṣitaḥ kena nirmitāḥ || 4.65 ||
For, these women are, by
their nature full of poison inside and outwardly appear to be attractive, thus
resembling ‘gunja’ fruit.
( All the above slokas are narrated by the crocodile to the monkey )
