सो ऽपि सम्बाध्यते लोके तृष्णया पश्य कौतुकम् ॥ १५ ॥
ekākī gṛha-santyaktaḥ pāṇi-pātro digambaraḥ |
so 'pi sambādhyate loke tṛṣṇayā paśya kautukam || 5.15 ||
See the wonder! Even one who has renounced the house, with begging bowl in hand, with no cloths, is overcome by greediness.
चक्षुः श्रोत्रे च जीर्येते तृष्णैका तरुणायते ।
कुदृष्टं कुपरिज्ञातं कुश्रुतं कुपरीक्षितम् ।
तन् नरेण न कर्तव्यं नापितेनात्र यत् कृतम् ॥ १६ ॥
jīryante jīryataḥ
keśā dantā jīryanti jīryataḥ |
cakṣuḥ śrotre ca jīryete tṛṣṇaikā taruṇāyate |
kudhrushtam kuparijñātaṃ kuśrutaṃ kuparīkṣitam |
tan nareṇa na kartavyaṃ nāpitenātra yat kṛtam || 5.16 ||
One should not act based on what he has seen wrongly or badly understood or ignorant in, or examined imperfectly; learn from the foolish barber.
अपरीक्ष्य न कर्तव्यं कर्तव्यं सुपरीक्षितम् ।
पश्चाद् भवति सन्तापो ब्राह्मणी नकुलं यथा ॥ १७ ॥
aparīkṣya
na kartavyaṃ kartavyaṃ suparīkṣitam |
paścād bhavati santāpo brāhmaṇī nakulaṃ yathā || 5.17 ||
Do not indulge in activities without proper investigation, act
only based on careful examination; else it would lead to remorse afterwards, as
with lady and mongoose.
दुर्विनीतः कुरूपो ऽपि मूर्खो ऽपि व्यसनी खलः ॥ १८ ॥
durvinītaḥ kurūpo 'pi mūrkho 'pi vyasanī khalaḥ || 5.18 ||
एवं च भाषते लोकश् चन्दनं किल शीतलम् ।
पुत्र-गात्रस्य संस्पर्शश् चन्दनाद् अतिरिच्यते ॥ १९ ॥
evaṃ ca
bhāṣate lokaś candanaṃ kila śītalam |
putra-gātrasya saṃsparśaś candanād atiricyate || 5.19 ||
The world claims that sandalwood paste is very cooling, but a touch of
one’s own son’s body excels everything else.

their children more than that of a brother, a father, a well-wisher, or a
protector.
