PANCHA TANTRA- APARIKSHITA KARAKAM- PTAK-4

 SUBHASHITHANI:471

अतिलोभो कर्तव्यो लोभं नैव परित्यजेत्।
अतिलोभाभिभूतस्य चक्रं भ्रमति मस्तके॥

atilobho na kartavyaḥ kartavyas tu pramāṇataḥ |
atilobhaabhi bhutasysa chakram bhramati mastake II 5.21

One should not be too greedy; nor should one give up desire. The wheel rotates on the head of a person who is overcome by greed.

वरं वनं व्याघ्र-गजादि-सेवितं

जलेन हीनं बहु-कण्टकावृतम्
तृणानि शय्या परिधान-वल्कलः

बन्धु-मध्ये धन-हीन-जीवितम् २२

varaṃ vanaṃ vyāghra-gajādi-sevitaṃ

 jalena hīnaṃ bahu-kaṇṭakāvṛtam |
tṛṇāni śayyā paridhāna-valkalaḥ

 na bandhu-madhye dhana-hīna-jīvitam || 5.22 ||

You can stay in a forest infested with tigers and elephants, void of water and full of thorny shrubs; sleep in a bed of grass; wear dress made of leaves; but it is most painful to live in penury amongst one’s own relatives.

THE FOUR TREASURE SEEKERS

स्वामी द्वेष्टि सुसेवितो ऽपि सहसा प्रोज्झन्ति सद्-बान्धवाः

 राजन्ते गुणास् त्यजन्ति तनुजाः स्फारीभवन्त्य् आपदः
भार्या साधु सुवंशजापि भजते नो यान्ति मित्राणि

 न्यायारोपित-विक्रमाण्य् अपि नृणां येषां हि स्याद् धनम् २३

svāmī dveṣṭi susevito 'pi sahasā projjhanti sad-bāndhavāḥ

rājante na guṇās tyajanti tanujāḥ sphārībhavanty āpadaḥ |
bhāryā sādhu suvaṃśajāpi bhajate no yānti mitrāṇi ca

nyāyāropita-vikramāṇy api nṛṇāṃ yeṣāṃ na hi syād dhanam ||5.23 ||

Men who have no wealth, though well-served are disliked by their masters, good relatives abandon them, their merits do not shine, woes multiply; wives from noble families, do not serve them well and friends and children forsake them.

शूरः सुरूपः सुभगश् वाग्मी

शस्त्राणि शास्त्राणि विदांकरोतु
अर्थं विना नैव यशश् मानं

प्राप्नोति मर्त्यो ऽत्र मनुष्य-लोके २४

śūraḥ surūpaḥ subhagaś ca vāgmī

śastrāṇi śāstrāṇi vidāṃkarotu |
arthaṃ vinā naiva yaśaś ca mānaṃ

prāpnoti martyo 'tra manuṣya-loke || 5.24 ||

In this mortal world, let him be brave, charming, amiable and eloquent; let him be an expert in handling weapons and well-versed in shastras; he does not get fame and respect if he has no wealth.

The words of the indigent will carry no weight even when they expound grand truths with masterly skill and knowledge.

तानीन्द्रियाण्य् अविकलानि तद् एव नाम

सा बुद्धिर् अप्रतिहता वचनं तद् एव
अर्थोष्मणा विरहितः पुरुषः एव बाह्यः

क्षणेन भवतीति विचित्रम् एतत् २५

tānīndriyāṇy avikalāni tad eva nāma

sā buddhir apratihatā vacanaṃ tad eva |
arthoṣmaṇā virahitaḥ puruṣaḥ sa eva bāhyaḥ

kṣaṇena bhavatīti vicitram etat || 5.25 ||

Sense organs remain the same, actions are the same, sharp intellect are the same, and so is the speech. However, without the warmth of wealth, the same man becomes a stranger that very moment. (This sloka is from Niti satakam)

सत्यं परित्यजति मुञ्चति बन्धु-वर्गं

शीघ्रं विहाय जननीम् अपि जन्म-भूमिम्
सन्त्यज्य गच्छति विदेशम् अभीष्ट-लोकं

चिन्ताकुलीकृत-मतिः पुरुषो ऽत्र लोके २६

satyaṃ parityajati muñcati bandhu-vargaṃ

 śīghraṃ vihāya jananīm api janma-bhūmim |
santyajya gacchati videśam abhīṣṭa-lokaṃ

cintākulīkṛta-matiḥ puruṣo 'tra loke || 5.26 ||

A man stuck by worries in this world – renounces truth; leaves his relatives;
even moves away quickly from his mother; renounces his motherland;
and goes to a foreign land to fulfil his wants.

दुष्प्राप्याणि बहूनि लभ्यन्ते वाञ्छितानि द्रविणानि
अवसर-तुलिताभिर् अलं तनुभिः साहसिक-पुरुषाणाम् २७

duṣprāpyāṇi bahūni ca labhyante vāñchitāni draviṇāni |
avasara-tulitābhir alaṃ tanubhiḥ sāhasika-puruṣāṇām || 5.27 ||

What is normally unattainable for others are also obtained by men who are courageous and willing to take risks at the appropriate time.
