ILL CONSIDERED ACTIONS
kudṛṣṭaṃ kuparijñātaṃ kuśrutaṃ kuparīkṣitam |
tan nareṇa na kartavyaṃ nāpitenātra yat kṛtam || 5.1 ||
One should not act based on what he has seen wrongly or understood or heard or examined imperfectly, as what the foolish barber did in the following story.
śīlaṃ śaucaṃ kṣāntir dākṣiṇyaṃ madhuratā kule janma |
na virājanti hi sarve vitta-vihīnasya puruṣasya || 5.2 ||
Noble character, purity of conduct, forbearance, kindness, amiability, and birth in a good family- all these do not help if one is poor.
māno vā darpo vā vijñānaṃ vibhramaḥ subuddhir vā |
sarvaṃ praṇaśyati samaṃ vitta-vihīno yadā puruṣaḥ || 5.3 ||
When a man is reduced to penury, self-respect, vanity, objective knowledge, grace, intelligence – all these disappear all at once.
Nalvazhi - Avvaiyaar
1. மானம்: honour and respect 2. குலம்: birth 3. கல்வி: education 4. ண்மை: caring 5. அறிவுடைமை: wisdom 6. தானம்: giving 7. தவம்: penance 8. உயர்ச்சி: high status 9. தாளாண்மை: effort 10. காமம்: sexuality - all these ten will disappear if one is hungry ( ie poor)
pratidivasaṃ yāti layaṃ vasanta-vātāhateva śiśira-śrīḥ |
buddhir buddhimatām api kuṭumba-bhara-cintayā satatam || 5.4 ||
Thinking of the family burden constantly, even the most intelligent men lose their ability think clearly; just like the beauty of winter is blown off due to the constant winds of spring.
naśyati vipulamater api buddhiḥ puruṣasya manda-vibhavasya |
ghṛta-lavaṇa-taila-taṇḍula-vastrendhana-cintayā satatam || 5.5 ||
Even the intellect of highly talented is clouded when one’s fortunes have  diminished due to constantly worrying about the burden of procuring ghee, salt, oil, rice, cloth and fuel.
gaṇanam iva naṣṭa-tārakaṃ suṣkam iva saraḥ
 śmaśānam iva raudram |
priya-darśanam api rūkṣaṃ bhavati
gṛhaṃ dhana-vihīnasya || 5.6 ||
Like the sky without stars, lake without water, horrid like the cemetery, the good looking house of a poor man looks ghastly.
na vibhāvyante laghavo vitta-vihīnāḥ puro 'pi nivasantaḥ |
satataṃ jāta-vinaṣṭāḥ payasām iva budbudāḥ payasi || 5.7 ||
Poor people are disrespected, not noticed even when present in front of some one, like the short lived bubbles in the waters of the ocean.
sukulaṃ kuśalaṃ sujanaṃ vihāya kula-kuśala-śīla-vikale'pi |
āḍhye kalpa-tarāv iva nityaṃ rajyanti jana-nivahāḥ || 5.8 ||
Leaving aside men of noble family, well accomplished, and well behaved because they are poor, people are always attracted to a rich man as though he were  a ‘kalpa taru’ although destitute of noble birth, skill and character.
