SUHRID BHEDA- SEPARATION OF FRIENDS-24

 SUBHASHITHANI:563

बन्धु  को नाम दुष्टानां  कुप्येत् को नाति याचितः I
को  हृष्यति वित्तेन  कुकृत्ये को  पण्डितः II
Bandu ko nama dushtaanaam kupyet ko naati yaachitah I
Ko na hrushyati vittena kukrutye ko na panditah II2.174
Who is a friend of the wicked? Who will not get angry if excessively importuned? Who is not proud of his wealth? Who is not an expert in carrying out evil deed?

दुर्वृत्तः क्रियते धूर्तैः श्रीमानात्म विवृद्धये I
किं नाम खल संसर्गः कुरुते नाश्रयाशवत् II
Durvruttah kriyate doortaih shrimaan atma vivruddhaye I
Kim naama khala samsargah kurute naashrayaashavat II2.175
A famous person is led in to vice by rogues for their own self-aggrandisement. Does not, the association with the wicked act like fire?

परैः संभुज्यते राज्यं स्वयं पापस्य भाजनं I
धर्माति क्रमतो राजा सिंहो हस्ति वधदिव  II
Paraih sambhujyate raajyam svayam paapasya bhajanam I
Dharmaati kramato raja simho hasti vadhadiva II2.176
A kingdom is enjoyed by others when the king transgresses his duty; while the king becomes the abode of sin, like the lion which kills an elephant.

भूम्य्-एक-देशस्य गुणान्वितस्य
भृत्यस्य वा बुद्धिमतः प्रणाशः 
भृत्य-प्रणाशो मरणं नृपाणां
नष्टापि भूमिः सुलभा  भृत्याः  १७७ 
bhūmy-eka-deśasya guṇānvitasya
bhṛtyasya vā buddhimataḥ praṇāśaḥ |
bhṛtya-praṇāśo maraṇaṃ nṛpāṇāṃ
naṣṭāpi bhūmiḥ sulabhā na bhṛtyāḥ || 2.177 ||
Between losing part of one’s territory and losing an intelligent and loyal servant, the loss of servant is death to a king: land though lost can easily be regained but not a servant.

पिता वा यदि वा भ्राता पुत्रो  वा यदि वा सुहृत् 
प्राण-च्छेद-करा राज्ञा हन्तव्या भूतिम् इच्छता  १७८ 
pitā vā yadi vā bhrātā putrī vā yadi vā suhṛt |
prāṇa-ccheda-karā rājñā hantavyā bhūtim icchatā || 2.178 ||
If either father or brother, if either  son or friend, conspire to eliminate the king, they should be put to death by a king desiring prosperity.

धर्मार्थ-काम-तत्त्वज्ञो नैकान्त-करुणो भवेत् 
नहि हस्तस्थम् अप्य् अन्नं क्षमावान् भक्षितुं क्षमः  १७९ 
dharmārtha-kāma-tattvajño naikānta-karuṇo bhavet |
nahi hastastham apy annaṃ kṣamāvān bhakṣituṃ kṣamaḥ || 2.179 ||
One who knows the nature of Dharma, artha, and kaama should not be too compassionate; a forbearing person is not able to preserve whatever little he already has.

क्षमा शत्रौ  मित्रे  यतीनाम् एव भूषणम् 
अपराधिषु सत्त्वेषु नृपाणां सैव दूषणम्  १८० 
kṣamā śatrau ca mitre ca yatīnām eva bhūṣaṇam |
aparādhiṣu sattveṣu nṛpāṇāṃ saiva dūṣaṇam || 2.180 ||
Treating an enemy and friend with compassion is an ornament only to an ascetic; but to an offender showing compassion is a defect for kings.

SUHRID BHEDA- SEPARATION OF FRIENDS-23

 

SUBHASHITHANI:562

ययोर् एव समं वित्तं ययोर् एव समं बलम्
तयोर् विवादो मन्तव्यो नोत्तमाधमयोः क्वचित् १६६
yayor eva samaṃ vittaṃ yayor eva samaṃ balam |
tayor vivādo mantavyo nottamādhamayoḥ kvacit || 2.166 ||
Only between those who are equal in wealth or strength there can be meaningful controversies not between worst and the best.
मन्त्रिणा पृतिवी पालचित्तं विघटितं  कचित् I
बलयं स्फटिकस्येव  को हि संधातुमीस्वरः  II
Manrinaa prutivee paalachittam vighatitam kachit I
Balayam spatikasyeva ko hi samdhatumeesvarah II2.167
When a king’s mind is alienated from the minister who can join it together, like crystal bracelet when broken?
वज्रंच राजतेजस्च द्वयमेवाति भीषणं I
एकमेकत्र पतति पतन्यन्यत्ममन्ततः  II
Vajramcha raajatejascha dvayamevaati bheeshanam I
Ekamekatra patati patanyanyanyatmamantatah II2.168
The thunder bolt and king’s severity are both extremely frightening; but one falls in a single spot and the other all around.
मृतः प्राप्नोति वा स्वर्गं शत्रुं हत्वा सुखानिवा I
उभावपि हि शूराणां गुणावेतौ सुदुर्लभौ  II
Mrutah prapnoti vaa svargam shatrum hatva sukhanivaa I
Ubhavapi hi shooraanaam gunaavetau sudurlabhau II2.169
A brave warrior attains heaven if dead, if he has killed the enemy, he attains pleasures; these two benefits are available only to the valiant and is rare.
यत्रा युद्धे ध्रुवं मृत्युर्युद्धे जीवित संशयः I
तमेव कालं युद्धस्य प्रवदन्ति मनीषिणः II
Yatraa yuddhe dhruvam mrutyur yuddhe jeevita samshayah I
Tmeva kalam yuddhasya pravadanti maneeshinah II2.170
When in peace there is certain destruction and in war chance of life, then that, the wise declare to be the time for battle. 
अयुद्धे हि यदा पश्येन् काञ्चिद् हितम् आत्मनः
युध्यमानस् तदा प्राज्ञो म्रियते रिपुणा सह १७०
ayuddhe hi yadā paśyen na kāñcid hitam ātmanaḥ |
yudhyamānas tadā prājño mriyate ripuṇā saha || 2.171 ||
When one feels there are no benefits in peace time to himself, then the wise man dies in a combat.

जयंच लभते लक्ष्मी मृतेनापि सुरङ्गनां I
क्षण विध्वांसिनः कायाः का चिन्ता मरणे रणे II
Jayamcha labhate Lakshmi mrutenaapi suraanganaam I
Kshana vidvaamsinah kaayaah kaa chintaa marane rane II2.172
In victory one obtains prosperity, in death a celestial bride; bodies perish in a moment, why then one worry about death in battle?

बलवानपि निस्तेजाः कस्य नाभि भवास्पदं I
निः शङ्कं दीयते लोकेः पश्य भस्मचये
पदं  II

Balavaanapi nistejaah kasya nabhi bhavaaspadam  I
Nishankham deeyate lokeh pasya bhasmachaye padam II2.173
To whom is a man, destitute of energy, although strong, is not an object of humiliation? Lo! People fearlessly put their foot upon a heap of ashes.

SUHRID BHEDA- SEPARATION OF FRIENDS-22

 SUBASHITHANI:561

निमित्तम् उद्दिश्य हि यः प्रकुप्यति

 ध्रुवं तस्यापगमे प्रसीदति
अकारण-द्वेषि मनस् तु यस्य वै

कथं जनस् तं परितोषयिष्यति १५९

nimittam uddiśya hi yaḥ prakupyati

 dhruvaṃ sa tasyāpagame prasīdati |
akāraṇa-dveṣi manas tu yasya vai

kathaṃ janas taṃ paritoṣayiṣyati || 2.159 ||

One who is displeased for a cause, can become pleased when the cause of displeasure is removed; but how can a man please another who is inimical without a cause?

विज्ञैः स्निग्धैर् उपकृतम् अपि द्वेष्यताम् एति कैश्चित्
साक्षाद् अन्यैर् अपकृतम् अपि प्रीतिम् एवोपयाति
चित्रं चित्रं किम् अथ चरितं नैकभावाश्रयाणां
 सेवा-धर्मः परम-गहनो योगिनाम् अप्य् अगम्यः १६०

vijñaiḥ snigdhair upakṛtam api dveṣyatām eti kaiścit

 sākṣād anyair apakṛtam api prītim evopayāti |
citraṃ citraṃ kim atha caritaṃ naikabhāvāśrayāṇāṃ

 sevā-dharmaḥ parama-gahano yoginām apy agamyaḥ || 2.160 ||

Even an act of kindness done by the learned and affectionate becomes hateful; while injury done by others finds favour; on account of difficulty of understanding the minds of kings which are fickle, the difficult duty of service is unattainable for even yogis.

कृत-शतम् असत्सु नष्टं सुभाषित-शतं नष्टम् अबुधेषु
वचन-शतम् अवचन-करे बुद्धि-शतम् अचेतने नष्टम् १६१

kṛta-śatam asatsu naṣṭaṃ subhāṣita-śataṃ ca naṣṭam abudheṣu |
vacana-śatam avacana-kare buddhi-śatam acetane naṣṭam || 2.161 ||

A hundred acts of kindness is lost on the wicked; a hundred wise sayings are lost up on those who would not act up to them; a hundred fine speeches up on the illiterate; and a hundred counsels up on the senseless.

चन्दन-तरुषु भुजङ्गा जलेषु कमलानि तत्र ग्राहाः
गुण-घातिनश् भोगे खला सुखान्य् अविघ्नानि १६२
candana-taruṣu bhujaṅgā jaleṣu kamalāni tatra ca grāhāḥ |
guṇa-ghātinaś ca bhoge khalā na ca sukhāny avighnāni || 2.162 ||
Sandal tree is infested with serpents; water ponds abound with lotuses and at the same time there are alligators; when one is enjoying a thing there are villains to obscure one’s good nature; so, there are no unobstructed  pleasure.
मूलं भुजङ्गैः कुसुमानि भृङ्गैः
 शाखाः प्लवङ्गैः शिखराणि भल्लैः
नास्त्य् एव तच्-चन्दन-पादपस्य
यन् नाश्रितं दुष्टतरैश् हिंस्रैः १६३
mūlaṃ bhujaṅgaiḥ kusumāni bhṛṅgaiḥ
 śākhāḥ plavaṅgaiḥ śikharāṇi bhallaiḥ |
nāsty eva tac-candana-pādapasya
 yan nāśritaṃ duṣṭataraiś ca hiṃsraiḥ || 2.163 ||
At the base there are serpents; flowers are filled with bees; branches (are filled) with birds; branches are with monkeys; top portions with bears; There is no part of a sandal tree that is not infested with cruel animals.
दूराद् उच्छ्रित-पाणिर् आद्र-नयनः प्रोत्सारितार्धासनो
 गाढालिङ्गन-तत्-परः प्रिय-कथा-प्रश्नेषु दत्तादरः
अन्तर्भूत-विषो बहिर् मधुमयश् चातीव माया-पटुः
को नामायम् अपूर्व-नाटक-विधिर् यः शिक्षितो दुर्जनैः १६४
dūrād ucchrita-pāṇir ādra-nayanaḥ protsāritārdhāsano
 gāḍhāliṅgana-tat-paraḥ priya-kathā-praśneṣu dattādaraḥ |
antarbhūta-viṣo bahir madhumayaś cātīva māyā-paṭuḥ
 ko nāmāyam apūrva-nāṭaka-vidhir yaḥ śikṣito durjanaiḥ || 2.164 ||
He raises his hands from a distance, eyes moist with tears, he proffers half of his seat, shows intent on close embrace, respectful in making inquiries and conversation, sweet from outside and poison inside, a great adept in deceit, what a wonderful art of play-acting  truly is this, learnt by the wicked?
पोतो दुस्तर-वारि-राशितरणे दीपो ऽन्धकारागमे
 निर्वाते व्यजनं मदान्ध-करिणां दर्पोपशान्त्यै सृणिः
इत्थं तद् भुवि नास्ति यस्य विधिना नोपाय-चिन्ता कृता
 मन्ये दुर्जन-चित्त-वृत्ति-हरणे धातापि भग्नोद्यमः १६५
poto dustara-vāri-rāśitaraṇe dīpo 'ndhakārāgame
nirvāte vyajanaṃ madāndha-kariṇāṃ darpopaśāntyai sṛṇiḥ |
itthaṃ tad bhuvi nāsti yasya vidhinā nopāya-cintā kṛtā
 manye durjana-citta-vṛtti-haraṇe dhātāpi bhagnodyamaḥ || 2.165 ||
A boat is useful in crossing an impassable ocean, a lamp against the approach of darkness, a fan when there is no breeze, a hook to tame the fury of an elephant blind with passion. Thus, there is an expedient thought of by the creator for every thing on this earth; I think even the creator is foiled in his efforts to find a way to reform the minds of the wicked.

SUHRID BHEDA- SEPARATION OF FRIENDS-21

 SUBHASHITHANI:560

सम्पत्तयः पराधीनाः सदा चित्तम् अनिर्वृत्तम्
स्व-जीइवितेऽप्य् अविश्वासस् तेषां ये राज-सेवकाः १५२

sampattayaḥ parādhīnāḥ sadā cittam anirvṛttam |
sva-jīivite'py aviśvāsas teṣāṃ ye rāja-sevakāḥ || 2.152 ||

Their wealth is dependent on others, their mind is always uneasy, their own life is uncertain, such are they who are serving a king.

को ऽर्थान् प्राप्य गर्वितो विषयिणः कस्यापदो ऽस्तं गताः

 स्त्रीभिः कस्य खण्डितं भुवि मनः को वास्ति राज्ञां प्रिया
कः कालस्य भुजान्तरं गतः को ऽर्थी गतो गौरवं

को वा दुर्जन-वागुरासु पतितः क्षेमेण यातः पुमान् १५३

ko 'rthān prāpya na garvito viṣayiṇaḥ kasyāpado 'staṃ gatāḥ

 strībhiḥ kasya na khaṇḍitaṃ bhuvi manaḥ ko vāsti rājñāṃ priyā |
kaḥ kālasya bhujāntaraṃ na ca gataḥ ko 'rthī gato gauravaṃ

 ko vā durjana-vāgurāsu patitaḥ kṣemeṇa yātaḥ pumān || 2.153 ||

Who is not proud having obtained wealth? The troubles of what sensualist ever come to an end? whose mind in this world is not troubled by women? who is a favourite of kings? who has escaped the clutches of death? what supplicant met with dignity? or what man fallen in to the meshes of the wicked ,has escaped unscathed?

मज्जन्न् अपि पयोराशौ लब्ध्वा सर्पावलम्बनम्
मुञ्चति चादत्ते तथा मुग्धो ऽस्मि सम्प्रति १५४

majjann api payorāśau labdhvā sarpāvalambanam |
na muñcati na cādatte tathā mugdho 'smi samprati || 2.154 ||

As and when sunk in the ocean and having obtained the support of a serpent, one can neither hold on to it or let go off it; I am in that predicament.

एकत्र राज-विश्वासो नश्यत्य् अन्यत्र बान्धवः
किं करोमि क्व गच्छामि पतित् दुःख-सागरे १५५

ekatra rāja-viśvāso naśyaty anyatra bāndhavaḥ |
kiṃ karomi kva gacchāmi patit o duḥkha-sāgare || 2.155 ||

On one hand, king’s confidence is lost, on the other hand, a good friend. What shall I do? Where can I go? Fallen in to sea of troubles.

दुर्जन-गम्या नार्यः प्रायेणापात्र-भृद् भवति राजा
कृपणानुसारि धनं देवो गिरि-जलधि-वर्षी १५६
durjana-gamyā nāryaḥ prāyeṇāpātra-bhṛd bhavati rājā |
kṛpaṇānusāri ca dhanaṃ devo giri-jaladhi-varṣī ca || 2.156 ||
Women seek the company of wicked men, kings favour the undeserving, wealth goes in to the hands of a miser, and the rain god pours on mountains and sea.

कश्चिद् आश्रय-सौन्दर्याद् धत्ते शोभाम् असज्जनः
प्रमदालोचन-न्यस्तं मलीमसम् इवाञ्जनम् १५७

kaścid āśraya-saundaryād dhatte śobhām asajjanaḥ |
pramadālocana-nyastaṃ malīmasam ivāñjanam || 2.157 ||

A bad person obtains glory by the support of his patron, just like the black collyrium applied to the eyes of beautiful women.

आराध्यमानो नृपतिः प्रयत्नान्

  तोषम् आयाति किम् अत्र चित्रम्
अयं त्व् अपूर्व-प्रतिमा-विशेषो

यः सेव्यमानो रिपुताम् उपैति १५८

ārādhyamāno nṛpatiḥ prayatnān

 na toṣam āyāti kim atra citram |
ayaṃ tv apūrva-pratimā-viśeṣo

yaḥ sevyamāno riputām upaiti || 2.158 ||

A king who is being served assiduously, may not be pleased; what wonder is there? but this is somewhat strange, who being served is turned in to an enemy.
