SUBHASHITHANI- MAHABHARATA-8

 SUBHASHITHANI:622

अप्राप्तकालं वचनं बृहस्पतिरपि ब्रुवन्
लभते बुद्धयवज्ञानमवमानं भारत .३९.
Apraptakalam vachanam bruhaspatirapi bruvan 
Labhate buddhyavagyaanam avamaanam cha bharata 
Oh Bharata, even if Bruhaspati were to utter words at the wrong time,
he will be accused of being ignorant and subject to insults.

 अबलस्य कुतः कोशो ह्यकोशस्य कुतो बलम्
अबलस्य कुतो राज्यमराज्ञः श्रीर्भवेत्कुतः १२.१३३.
Abalasya kutah kosho hyakoshasya kuto balam I
Abalsya kuto rajyam araagyah shri bhavet ktutah II
From where will the weak acquire wealth? And how will the unwealthy one acquire power? Also, how will the kingdom of a powerless one survive? And if the kingdom is lost then how will its wealth remain? –12.133.4
अब्रुवन्कस्यचिन्निन्दामात्मपूजामवर्णयन्
कश्चिद्गुणसम्पन्नः प्रकाशो भुवि दृश्यते .२०७.५०
Abhruvan kasyachin nindaat aatmapoojaamavarnayan I
Na kaschitgunasampannah prakasho bhuvi drushyate II3.207.50
It is not seen that any meritorious man comes to prominence in the world without criticizing someone and without self-praise.
अभिमानकृतं कर्म नैतत्फलवदुच्यते ।
त्यागयुक्तं महाराज सर्वमेव महाफलम् ॥ १२.१२.१६
Abhimana krutam karma naitat phalavad uchyate I
Thyaga yuktam maharaja sarvameva mahaphalam II12.12.16
Actions performed with pride does not produce good results; all actions carried out with the spirit of sacrifice will produce great results .( Nakula to Yudhishtira )

अभिशस्तं प्रपश्यन्ति दरिद्रं पार्श्वतः स्थितम्
दारिद्रयं पातकं लोके तच्छंसितुमर्हति १२..१४
Abhishastam prapasyanti daridram paarshvatah stitham I
Daaridrayam paatakam loke na tachchamsitum arhati. II12.8.14
If a poor man stands near, people look at him with derision. Poverty is a curse in this world and hence should not be glorified.
अभ्यावहति कल्याणं विविधं वाक्सुभाषिता
सैव दुर्भाषिता राजन्ननथार्योपपद्यते .३४.७७
Abhyaavahati kalyaanam vividham vak subhashitaa I
Saiva durbhashitaa rajan anarthaya upapadyate II5.34.77
Sweet words spoken are beneficial and opens paths to progress but if the same thing is spoken in bitter words, it is painful and has far-reaching ill effects.(Vidura niti)
अमर्षजो हि सन्तापः पावकाद्दीप्तिमत्तरः .३५.११
Amarshajo hi santaapah paavakaat deeptimattarah I 3.35.11
Anger caused by intolerance is stronger than fire.
अमित्रमुपसेवेत विश्वस्तवदविश्वसन्
प्रियमेव वदेन्नित्यं नाप्रियं किञ्चिदाचरेत् १२.१०.३९
Amitram upaseveta vishvasta vada vishsan I
Priyameva vadennityam naapriyam kinchit aacharet II12.10.39
One should deal with  an enemy as if he were a trustworthy person.
One should always speak pleasant things and never do anything unpleasant.

SUBHASHITHANI- MAHABHARATA-7

 SUBHASHITHANI:621

अन्यो हि नाश्नाति कृतं हि कर्म
 मनुष्यलोके मनुजस्य कश्चित्
यत्तेन किंचिद्धि कृतं हि कर्म
 तदश्नुते नास्ति कृतस्य नाशः .२०७.२७
Anyo hi na asnaati krutam hi karma
Manushya loke manujasya kaschit I 
Yattena kimchidhdhi krutam hi karma
Tad asnute naasti krutasya naashah II
The fruits of action done by one is not enjoyed by someone else; it is the doer who has to bear the pleasure and pain resulting from his action. What he has done is not destroyed by that which he enjoys.
अपि ज्ञानसम्पन्नः सर्वान्वेदान्पितुगृहे
श्लाघमान इवाधीयाद्ग्राम्य इत्येव तं विदुः १३.३६.१५
Api cha gyanasampannah sarvaan vedaan pitrugruhe I
Shlagamana ivaadheeyad gramya ityeva tam viduh II 13.36.15
If remaining in his father's house and masters all the vedas and acquiring great knowledge and aquires a position that should command respect, people still condemn him as untravelled and a home-bird.
( Note:Thousands of years back a   child should leave the house and learn the vedas in a  gurukulam . Even royal kids were not exempt.) 
अभिमानः श्रियं हन्ति पुरुषस्याल्पमेधसः।
 गर्भेण दुष्यते कन्या गृहवासेन द्विजः॥
Abhimaanah shriyam hanti purushasyaalpa medhasah I
Garbhena dushyate kanyaa gruha vaasena cha dvijah II
Pride destroys the prosperity of persons of little wit. A maiden, if she conceives becomes stained, A brahman incurs reproach by remaining at home.
अपि चेत्सुदुराचारो भजते मामनन्यभाक् |
साधुरेव मन्तव्य: सम्यग्व्यवसितो हि : || BG9.30||
api chet su-durāchāro bhajate mām ananya-bhāk I
sādhur eva sa mantavyaḥ samyag vyavasito hi saḥ II
Even if the vilest sinners worship Me with exclusive devotion, they are to be considered righteous, for they have made the proper resolve.

अपि चेदसि पापेभ्य: सर्वेभ्य: पापकृत्तम: |
सर्वं ज्ञानप्लवेनैव वृजिनं सन्तरिष्यसि || BG4.36||

api ched asi pāpebhyaḥ sarvebhyaḥ pāpa-kṛit-tamaḥ I
sarvaṁ jñāna-plavenaiva vṛijinaṁ santariṣhyasi II

Even those who are considered the most immoral of all sinners can cross over this ocean of material existence by seating themselves in the boat of divine knowledge.

अपि शाकं पचानस्य सुखं वै मघवन् गृहे ।
अर्जितं स्वेन वीर्येण न व्यपाश्रित्य कञ्चन ॥ ३६६
Api shakam pachanasya sukham vai maghavan gruhe 
Arjitam svena viryena na vyapashritya kanchana 
O Maghavan, Happy is the man who cooks for his food, even little leaves earned by his own efforts, without depending on others.
अपि सर्वस्वमुत्सृज्य रक्षेदात्मानमात्मना १२.१३८.१७९
Api sarvasvam utsujya rakshet atmana atmanaa II12.138.179
We should protect ourselves even by giving up all our possessions.
 अप्युन्मत्तात्पलपतो बालाच्च परिजल्पतः
सर्वतः सारमादद्यादश्मभ्य इव काञ्चनम् .३४.३२
Apyunmattatpalapato baalaascha parijalpatah I
Sarvatah saaramaadadhyaat asmabya iva kaanchanam II
One should extract the essence , whether it is from the blabbering of a mad man or the prattlings of a child; like gold is extracted from the ore. 
अप्रयत्नागताः सेव्या गृहस्थैर्विषयाः सदा।
प्रयत्नेनोपगम्यश्च स्वधर्म इति मे मति॥ शान्ति.२९५/
३५॥
Aprayatnaagataah sevyaa gruhastair vishayaah sadaa I
Prayatnena upagamyascha svadharma iti me mathih I
A house-holder should be content with what he gets without any effort due to providence; he should also without any compunction, enjoy riches and other possessions which he may acquire by exertion; this is svadharma of a house-holder according to me. (Parasara smruti)

अनृतं जीवितस्यार्थे वदन्न स्पृश्यतेऽनृतैः .१९०.४७
Anrutam jeevitasyaarte vadanna sprusyate anrutaih II 7.190.47
Uttering falsehood for the sake of saving a life is not considered as lying.

பொய்மையும் வாய்மை யிடத்த புரைதீர்ந்த
நன்மை பயக்கும் எனின். Thirukkural 292
Even falsehood has the nature of truth, if it confer a benefit that is free from fault.

अन्त्येषु रेमिरे धीरा ते मध्येषु रेमिरे।
अन्त्यमाप्तिं सुखामाहुर्दुःखमन्तरमन्त्ययोः १२.१७४.३४
Antyeshu Remire Dheera na Te Madhyeshu Remire.I
Atyantam aaptim Sukhamahur dukhamantaram  antyayoh II 12.174.34

The wise ones live in the last state and not the middle one. The last state is said to be blissful and the middle one of misery.

 अन्यथा चिन्तितो ह्यर्थः पुनर्भवति सोऽन्यथा
अनित्यमतयो लोके नराः पुरुषसत्तम .८०.६ ll
Anyatha chintito hyarthah punarbhavati so anyatha.
Anityamatayo Loke Naraa: Purushasattama. 5.80.6
O foremost among men! an object, decided in one way, soon becomes different, when the conditions are changed; therefore man cannot stick to the same opinion in this world. ( Nakula to Krishna when doubts were raised whether the one year incognito was indeed completed.)
अन्यया यौवने मर्त्यो बुद्धया भवति मोहितः
मध्येऽन्यया जरायां तु सोऽन्यां रोचयते मतिम् १०..११
Anyayaa Youvane Martyo Buddhaya Bhavati Mohitah.I
Madhye anyayaa jarayaam tu so anyaam rochayate matim II10.3.11
The understanding of men is one kind in youth, different in adulthood, and in the period of decay a totally different kind of understanding prevails.
अन्यान्परिवदन्साधुर्यथा हि परितप्यते
तथा परिवदन्नन्यांस्तुष्टो भवति दुर्जनः .७४.९२
Anyanparivadan sadhuryatha hi paritapyate I
Tatha Parivadannanyaam tushto bhavati durjana: 1.74.92
Just as a wise man regrets to hear slandering of others , a wicked man takes pleasure when others are reviled.
अन्यो धनं प्रेतगतस्य भुङ्क्ते
वयांसि चाग्निश्च शरीरधातून्
द्वाभ्यामयं सह गच्छत्यमुत्र
पुण्येन पापेन वेष्ट्यमानः .४०.१६
Anyo Dhanam  Pretagatasya Bhunkte
Vyaamsi cha agnish cha sarira dhaatoonl.
Dvabhyamayam saha Gachchath amutra
Punyena papena cha Veshtyamaanah: 5.40.16

The wealth of the deceased is enjoyed by the others (who are his heirs), while the birds (if the body is left in the forest) and the fire feast on the elements of his body. Only his virtues and sins accompany him , when he travels to the other world. (Viduranīti- 8.16)

अन्यो धर्मःसमर्थानामापत्स्वन्यश्च भारत १२.१३०.१४
Anyo Dharma: Samarthanam aapatsvanyascha Bharata 12.130.14
O Bharata!  the righteous conduct when one has power is quite different from that when one is faced with calamity.  (Bhishma tells Dharmaputra)  
अन्योन्यसमुपष्टम्भादन्योन्यापाश्रयेण
ज्ञातयः सम्प्रवर्धन्ते सरसीवोत्पलान्युत .३६.३६
Anyonya samupashtambhad anyonyapasrayena cha I
Gyatayah sampravardhante sraseevotpalaanyuta II. 5.36.36
With mutual support and with mutual dependence, relatives prosper verily like the water-lilies in the lake .

अनाहूतः प्रविशति अपृष्टो बहु भाषते
अविश्वस्ते विश्वसिति मूढचेता नराधमः .३३.३६
Anahuta: Pravishati Aprushto Bahu Bhashate.
Avishwaste Vishwasiti Muda Cheta Naradhama: 5.33.36
A person who enters uninvited, speaks abundantly without being asked and trusts an untrustworthy person is a foolish and meanest person.
अनित्यं यौवनं रूपं जीवितं द्रव्यसञ्चयः
आरोग्यं प्रियसंवासो गृध्येत्तत्र पण्डितः १२.३३०.१४
Anityam Yuvanam roopam jeevitam dravyasanchayah I
Aarogyam priyasamvaaso gridhyet tatra na pandita: 12.330.14 book
Transient are: youth, beauty, life, wealth, health, association with friends ; a wise one does not covet them. 
अनिर्वेदः श्रियो मूलं लाभस्य शुभस्य .३९.५९
Anirveda: Shriyo mulam labhasya cha shubhasya cha 5.39.59
Self-confidence is the root cause of prosperity, profit, and happiness.
முயற்சி திருவினை ஆக்கும் முயற்றின்மை
இன்மை புகுத்தி விடும். | குறள் எண்
– 616.
Effort brings fortune's sure increase, Its absence brings to nothingness.
अनिर्वेदेन दीर्घेण निश्चयेन ध्रुवेण
देवदेवप्रसादाच्च क्षिप्रं फलमवाप्यते १२.१५३.११७
Anirrvedena deergena nischayena dhruvena cha I
Deva deva prasaadaacha Kshipram phalam avaapyate. 12.153.117
Through continued hopefulness and firm determination and grace of god, fruits of one's action are obtained forthwith.
अनिष्टं सर्वभूतानां मरणं नाम भारत
मृत्युकाले हि भूतानां सद्यो जायति वेपथुः १३.११६.२७
Anishtam sarvabhootaanaam mmaranam naama bharata I
Mrutyu kaale hi bhootaanam sadhyo jaayati vepatuh II 13.116.27
O King! Death is disliked by all beings; when the time of death is near the body starts trembling.
अनुकम्प्यो नरः पत्न्या पुष्टो रक्षित एव
प्रपतेद्यशसो दीप्तात्स लोकान्न चाप्नुयात् १४.९०.४७
Anukampyo Nara: patnyaa Prushto Rakshita eva Cha.
Prapatedhyashaso diptatatsa cha lokaanna chapnuyaat 14.90.47
Pitiable is the life of a man who lives and feeds on the earnings of his wife. Such a man is deprived of fame, brightness. and loses heaven.
अनुक्त्वा विक्रमेद्यस्तु तद्वै सत्पुरुषव्रतम् .१५८.१९
Anuktvaa Vikramedhyastu Tadvai Satpurusha vratam 7.158.19
It is the vow of a good man to show his prowess without self-boasting.
अनुग्रहं मित्राणाममित्राणां निग्रहम्
सङ्ग्रहं त्रिवर्गस्य श्रेय आहुर्मनीषिणः १२.२८७.१६
anugraham cha mitraanaam amitraanaam cha nigraham.I
Sangraham cha trivargasya Shreya aahur maneeshinah II12.287.16
The wise say that to gain 'shreyas' it is advisable to be benevolent to a friend, finish an enemy, and nurture Dharma,artha, and kama.

अधनेनार्थकामेन नार्थः शक्यो विधित्सितुम्
अर्थैरर्था निबध्यन्ते गजैरिव महागजाः १२..२०
Adhanenarthakamena nartha: sakyo vidhitsittum.
Arthairartha Nibadhyante Gajairiva Mahagajaa: 12.8.20
If a person who has no wealth aspires to become wealthy, he meets with failure. wealth accumulates wealth; like an elephant is used to capture another elephant.
வினையான் வினையாக்கிக் கோடல் நனைகவுள்
யானையால் யானையாத் தற்று. Thirukkural 678
By one thing done you reach a second work's accomplishment;
So furious elephant to snare its fellow brute is sent.

अधर्मरूपो धर्मो हि कश्चिदस्ति नराधिप 
धर्मश्चाधर्मरूपोऽस्ति तच्च ज्ञेयं विपश्चिता  १२.३३.३२
Adharmarupo Dharmo hi Kaschidasti Naradhipa.
Dharmas cha adharmarupo asti tat cha gyeyam vipaschitaa 
 12.33.32
O king, sometimes adharma takes the form of dharma and dharma the form of adharma; therefore it is necessary for the wise man to know the difference and choose the right course of action.

अधर्मो धर्मतां याति स्वामी चेद्धार्मिको भवेत्
स्वामिनो गुणदोषाभ्यां भृत्याः स्युर्नात्र संशयः ११..३३
Adharmo dharmataam yaati swamii ched dharmiko bhavet.
Swamino Gunadosabhyam Bhrityaa: Syur naatra Samshayah 11.8.33
Even the unrighteous servitor of a righteous master (householder) becomes righteous. Undoubtedly the qualities and defects in the master are reflected in his servant. 
अध्रुवा सर्वमर्त्येषु श्रीरुपालक्ष्यते भृशम् .६५.२०
Adhruvaa Sarvamartyeshu Sri rupaa lakshyate Bhrisham. 9.65.20
All human opulence appears to be completely impermanent. 
अनन्तं बत मे वित्तं यस्य मे नास्ति किंचन
मिथिलायां प्रदीप्तायां मे दह्यति किंचन ।।१२.१७.१९
anantaṃ bata me vittaṃ yasya me nāsti kiṃcana
mithilāyāṃ pradīptāyāṃ na me dahyati kiṃcana ।।12.17.19
My treasures are immense, yet I have nothing ! If again the whole of Mithila were burnt and reduced to ashes, nothing of mine will be burnt.

अनर्हते यद्ददाति ददाति यदर्हते
अर्हानर्हापरिज्ञानाद्दानधर्मोऽपि दुष्करः १२.२०.

anarhate yaddadaati na dadaati yadarhate.
Arhaanarhan parigyaanaad daana dharmopi dushkara: 12.20.9
one who gives charity to an undeserving person and not to a deserving person due to inability to distinguish between them will not gain merits; therefore even charity and virtuosity are difficult to understand and follow.
अनागतविधाता प्रत्युत्पन्नमतिश्च यः
द्वावेव सुखमेधते दीर्घसूत्री विनश्यति १२.१३७.११
anaagata vidhaataa cha pratyutpanna matischa yah I
Dwaveva Sukhmedhate deerga Sutri Vinashati 12.137.11
He who is prepared for the future and he who deals cleverly with any situation that may arise are both happy; but the man who keeps postponing till the last minute is ruined.
अनायुष्यं दिवा स्वप्नं तथाभ्युदितशायिता १३.१०४.१३९
Anayushyam Diva Swapnam Tathabhyuditshaita 13.104.139
Napping during the day and sleeping at sunrise are detrimental to life.
अनारम्भात्तु कार्याणां नार्थः सम्पद्यते क्वचित् १०..३४
Anarambhaattu Kaaryaanaam Nartha: Sampadhyate Kvachit 10.2.34
without embarking on action nothing is ever achieved
