You can stay in a forest infested with tigers and elephants, void of water and full of thorny shrubs; sleep in a bed of grass; wear dress made of leaves; but it is most painful to live in penury amongst one’s own relatives.

Sense organs remain the same, actions are the same, sharp intellect are the same, and so is the speech. However, without the warmth of wealth, the same man becomes a stranger that very moment. (This sloka is from Niti satakam)

Man becomes old and infirm, loses his hair and teeth and cannot even hear and see properly. Everything in his body degenerates but not desire.
One should not act based on what he has seen wrongly or badly understood or ignorant in,  or examined imperfectly; learn from the foolish barber.

PANCHA TANTRA- APARIKSHITA KARAKAM- PTAK-2

 SUBHASHITHANI:469

The story of the Foolish Barber

Once there was a rich merchant who became poor by excessive generosity. He thought it was not wise to continue a life of penury. With this thought in mind, he went to sleep. He had a dream in which a Jain monk appeared and told him ‘You have your head shaven tomorrow morning and when a monk appears hit him with a club and he will turn into gold.’ The merchant did accordingly and got the gold. A barber witnessing the events thought he would also become rich by inviting Jain monks to his house and beating them with a club. He did that and ended up murdering sadhus and was hanged for murder.

viphalam iha pūrva-sukṛtaṃ vidyāvanto 'pi kula-samudbhūtāḥ |
yasya yadā vibhavaḥ syāt tasya tadā dāsatāṃ yānti || 5.9 ||
Merits from previous good deeds is of not much use in this world, since even men of noble birth and well educated become servants of some one who is rich.

laghur ayam āha na lokaḥ kāmaṃ garjantam api patiṃ payasām |
sarvam alajjākaram iha yad yat kurvanti paripūrṇāḥ || 5.10 ||
The ocean is praised for its roaring waves and no one will criticize it’s saline water; whatever the rich man does is never shameful.

vyādhitena sa-śokena cintā-grastena jantunā |

Dreams seen by those who are sick, sorrowing, lustful or drunk are meaningless.

jayanti te jinā yeṣāṃ kevala-jñāna-śālinām |
ā janmanaḥ smarotpattau mānasenoṣarāyitam || 5.12 ||
Victory to the Jain monks, who are men of total wisdom, and are devoid of any lustful thoughts.

The tongue that praiseth Him is blest;
The heart, in Him that seeketh rest;
The hands are blest, and only they,
 That e’er to Him due homage pay. Translation by A.W.Ryder.
(The above two Jain hymns were recited by the barber to please the Abbot)

serṣyaṃ māra-vadhūbhir ity abhihito bauddho jinaḥ pātu vaḥ || 5.14 ||
Pretending to meditate, but which lady are you thinking about? Open your eyes and observe these men who are bound by lust. Why are you not protecting them, even though you are their saviour? Are you really compassionate? Who can be more heartless than you? May Buddha, who was addressed by love stricken women , protect all of us.

PANCHA TANTRA- APARIKSHITA KARAKAM- ILL CONSIDERED ACTIONS

 SUBHASHITHANI:468

Pancha tantra-Book 5

ILL CONSIDERED ACTIONS
kudṛṣṭaṃ kuparijñātaṃ kuśrutaṃ kuparīkṣitam |
tan nareṇa na kartavyaṃ nāpitenātra yat kṛtam || 5.1 ||
One should not act based on what he has seen wrongly or understood or heard or examined imperfectly, as what the foolish barber did in the following story.
śīlaṃ śaucaṃ kṣāntir dākṣiṇyaṃ madhuratā kule janma |
na virājanti hi sarve vitta-vihīnasya puruṣasya || 5.2 ||
Noble character, purity of conduct, forbearance, kindness, amiability, and birth in a good family- all these do not help if one is poor.
māno vā darpo vā vijñānaṃ vibhramaḥ subuddhir vā |
sarvaṃ praṇaśyati samaṃ vitta-vihīno yadā puruṣaḥ || 5.3 ||
When a man is reduced to penury, self-respect, vanity, objective knowledge, grace, intelligence – all these disappear all at once.
Nalvazhi - Avvaiyaar
1. மானம்: honour and respect 2. குலம்: birth 3. கல்வி: education 4. ண்மை: caring 5. அறிவுடைமை: wisdom 6. தானம்: giving 7. தவம்: penance 8. உயர்ச்சி: high status 9. தாளாண்மை: effort 10. காமம்: sexuality - all these ten will disappear if one is hungry ( ie poor)

pratidivasaṃ yāti layaṃ vasanta-vātāhateva śiśira-śrīḥ |
buddhir buddhimatām api kuṭumba-bhara-cintayā satatam || 5.4 ||
Thinking of the family burden constantly, even the most intelligent men lose their ability think clearly; just like the beauty of winter is blown off due to the constant winds of spring.
naśyati vipulamater api buddhiḥ puruṣasya manda-vibhavasya |
ghṛta-lavaṇa-taila-taṇḍula-vastrendhana-cintayā satatam || 5.5 ||
Even the intellect of highly talented is clouded when one’s fortunes have  diminished due to constantly worrying about the burden of procuring ghee, salt, oil, rice, cloth and fuel.

 śmaśānam iva raudram |
priya-darśanam api rūkṣaṃ bhavati
gṛhaṃ dhana-vihīnasya || 5.6 ||
Like the sky without stars, lake without water, horrid like the cemetery, the good looking house of a poor man looks ghastly.
na vibhāvyante laghavo vitta-vihīnāḥ puro 'pi nivasantaḥ |
satataṃ jāta-vinaṣṭāḥ payasām iva budbudāḥ payasi || 5.7 ||
Poor people are disrespected, not noticed even when present in front of some one, like the short lived bubbles in the waters of the ocean.
sukulaṃ kuśalaṃ sujanaṃ vihāya kula-kuśala-śīla-vikale'pi |
āḍhye kalpa-tarāv iva nityaṃ rajyanti jana-nivahāḥ || 5.8 ||
Leaving aside men of noble family, well accomplished, and well behaved because they are poor, people are always attracted to a rich man as though he were  a ‘kalpa taru’ although destitute of noble birth, skill and character.
